Hi,

I’m a 27 year-old male, uncircumcised. I have been dealing with a dull ache in my urethra and pain in my lower abdomen since the first week of June 2008. I am going on five months of discomfort on a daily basis and I’m feeling depressed and hopeless! Other symptoms- lack of strength in my penis, I can’t control the pee with my muscles and can’t get a hard erection like I used to. I can still have sex but its weak.

At first I thought it was an STD or UTI because my girlfriend had a UTI simultaneously during that first week. We were both tested for STD’s and the urine specimen came back negative. My girlfriend felt fine after two days. My symptoms have continued on a consistent level. I have seen five doctors including a naturopathic Dr., homeopathic Dr. and one urologist. They have found no signs of infection or inflammation. They performed a rectal exam to check out my prostate- no abnormal signs. I have taken every antibiotic out there- cipro for a three-week run- felt no improvements at all. I tried baking soda in my water to balance out my acidic levels, cleansing and drinking tons of fluid- nothing has worked.

It seems obvious that it is a bacterial infection- I live in Hawaii, sweat a lot, swim a lot, etc. But if it were a virus, the antibiotics would have killed it already, right? It has been five months, I’m not sure what else to do. I’ve been misdiagnosed and mistreated. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

You need to get checked for Mycoplasma Genitalium, you'll need a DNA test

What leads you to believe that this is the diagnosis instead? I don't think that it's as likely as just a plain UTI or STD that was missed in a blood test. What do you think about it?

I have the same symtoms. Whatever this is I got it in hawaii as well. I have had treatment for a fungal infection, which seemed to help, but there are still some symptoms. I have also had 4 courses of antibiotics, and std tests.

FYI - viral infection and bacterial infetion are not the same.  Antibiotics work with bacterial infections and not viral infections.  You cannot "kill" a virus, which is why there is no cure for the flu, common cold and HIV.
