My first period after starting Prozac was only 3 weeks from my last period. Then the time between my periods went to 6 weeks, then 8 weeks, then 4 weeks. Very strange.

So August 2010 I stopped taking Prozac after about two and a half years. I missed my period in October and have not gotten it since. I am not sexually active and had never missed my period previous to that. I went to the doctor after about three months of missing it and was told that there was absolutely no correlation to my having stopped prozac and missing my period. Not only did my period stop, I developed cystic acne, a bald spot on my head, and severe abdominal bloating and pain. If ANYONE has something similar to this please post. I firmly believe there is a huge connection between the two, and conventional medicine may not be my answer. Also, I started birth control(against my better judgement) and the symptoms have just worsened. I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Thanks for your posts. Would love to know if you've had any tests of further investigation. I had taken 10mg prozac a day for a couple of years and stopped in Nov last year. have always had reg periods but they have since become delayed or nonexistent. Have that ongoing bloated feeling and am retaining water. There appears to be a lot of unofficial info supporting a link between Prozac and periods. It is the only thing I can put it down to. I’m having a blood test and ultra sound to check it out. Will let you know any relevant findings :-)

I had some tests done as well and everything(80 pages of labwork) turned out fine. The only thing they did find was PCO (my ovaries are cystic). However, all my hormones and adrenal levels are fine. I had no prior problems with my period or hair loss previous to stopping the prozac. It was literally the next month that I stopped menstruating. If you get a chance can you post how your labs turned out? Thanks for posting!

Thanks zuehlkec,
the ultrasound that's due to be done is a full pelvic one and will look for PCOS (polycystic ovaries). If you don’t mid me asking, how are you treating this? Bizarrely the exam is booked for tomorrow and today, after over x2 months and only x2 periods this year, I've got it (period)! Not getting excited though as there is obviously something out of whack. Anyway, ultrasound is rebooked for next week now (can't do it if bleeding). I had a further blood test yest for all hormone levels. As with you I have the feeling that due to no prior problems then all of a sudden delayed and missed periods just when I stopped Prozac that it must be related. I have a sister with PSOS hence tests for that but Dr said very odd to get a sudden onset and given I’ve had a pregnancy and no prior probs.
If anyone reading this has had a similar issue after stopping Prozac and is now back to a regular cycle. I’d love to hear how long it took to return to normal! It’s been over 6 months and I’m still all over the place!

Hi,
I have been taking prozac for 4 months now, i usually have a regular 26 day cycle, but the first month i was a week early and second month i was two weeks late!
It definately does something to your cycle which is bizarre.
I have gained a few pounds but that is understandable, as most people take them to reduce stress irratability, depression or anxiety, half of which cause your body to run on adrenaline which therefore would burn extra calories, or depression can cause a lack of appetite.
With our bodies no longer living on adrenaline and calm we will automatically hold more weight.
