I've been on methadone just over 3 months and haven't had a period. It seems missed periods can be a common side effect of methadone treatment, a lot of women in my doctor's office haven't been having periods either. I've noticed a LOT of sexual side effects, no period, lowered libido, delayed and/or no orgasm, trouble getting turned on, occasional dryness, etc. And that's JUST sexual!
I've also experienced the following at one time or another (many at the beginning some the whole time I've been on it) weight loss then gain, loss of appetite then overly hungry, excessive sleeping (12-16 hours a day sometimes now), chronic fatigue/lethargy, dry mouth, sweating, heat intolerance/multiple daily prolonged hot flashes, sleep disturbances and insomnia (at the beginning a lot, rarely now), vivid dreams, itching, urinary difficulties, forgetfulness/memory problems, mood changes (they've gotten better), and I'm sure some other symptoms I'm forgetting to mention. I'm lowering my dose now (I needed to start at a high amount IMO) and lowering the dose seems to decrease the severity of the symptoms a very little bit the lower I get.
Also, SEVERE constipation AND FECAL IMPACTIONS (multiple times, NOT fun. I have to take strong stool softeners AND milk of magnesia every day just to go a few times a week, but still find myself needing to use enemas, suppositories, and laxatives a couple times a month)! This alone has caused bloating, very painful bowel movements, stomach pain, hemorrhoids, anal fishers, and weight gain.
I know this was just about the periods, but I wanted to let people know if they're suffering from other side effects they're not alone. If someone reads this before they start methadone they can see some (there are quite a few more listed that I don't have) of the side effects we go through and how difficult they can be.
To answer the question above, I know many people who've been on Suboxone and Methadone, Suboxone did NOT stop their periods like Methadone did, I don't know anyone who missed periods because of Suboxone.

well if this is two years old it won't matter, but suboxone treatment won't cause you to stop your periods but methadone will! It has ruined my life! I haven't had a period since the second month and I've been on methadone for one year now, I've fought with these people to wean me but after 7 months of trying, they have only reduced my dose by a couple of mg., so I've decided to not drink my full dose and not complete my take homes from now on, Hopefully I can get myself off this sh*t! I'm sterile now because of methadone!

In response to Hillsy099, I just replied to another post anonymously, for now but methadone has really ruined my life. It caused me to stop my periods completely and after several months go into a early menopause. Of course the morning sweats non stop and if I'd known I'd never gotten on this garbage. I though suboxone was bad. It was awful but I still had my period. I hate sex, can barely get out of bed to make it to the clinic, but remained underweight for the first 8 months of treatment now I'm getting fat and my Klonopin finally shows up in my drug screens after the sudden weight gain. Many of my symptoms were helped by getting a Nutri Bullet, and I've increased to 10 or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day so I manage to go to the bathroom, I add avocado or banana to every Nutriblast and I drink two per day. I also use coconut oil, kale, acai berries, Maca powder, chia seeds, and many other superfoods and every kind of berry you can think of, practically. Also lots of grapes, melons, canteloupe, lentils, peas, seeds and nuts. No red meat at all.

Yes I believe it is the methadone. It will be 2 years in May that I have been on methadone and I rarely get my period! I get it once every like 3 or 4 months if I'm lucky. There is no other reason but the methadone. And for anyone who is having serious side effect from the methadone, for example: Sweating, drowsiness, constipation, stomach upset, Etc. Then try NUTRIDONE!!

I went on methadone 6 years ago and after the first month I never had a period again ever. my doctor says why do you want you period whenever I bring it up to him but I just want to know if its' okay or is it serious not to have the period. I am concerned about it but so far have not found out anything. also within months of starting methadone my whole body aches and is stiff and sore. they say its fibromyalgia but is it? it seems suspicious that it coincides with starting meth

I also was wondering about this. I thought I was pregnant but the timing wasn't really right however I wasnt 100% positive if I wasn't pregnant. It's been 3-4 months and I have taken 3 pregnancy tests over a period of 2 weeks and each one was negative. I even made a doctor's appointment for a week from now to find out what the hell was going on. Then, I remembered that I had just started taking methadone daily 3-4 months ago exactly and the last period I had was right before I started to take it... It would be nice for whomever is prescribing methadone to let us women know that this is a side effect so we dont freak out, waste our time and our money!
