all over the world... Family chased for dead woman's fine 09 June 2006 Dead people can't pay fines, but that doesn't stop the Justice Ministry from chasing them for the money. Eltham woman Marise Espiner died three years ago from a brain tumour. In the past month, her sister, Lynne, has fielded at least 10 phone calls from the ministry's collection's unit, demanding to know where she is and when she will pay up. The ministry will not provide details of the offence or the amount of the fine to her next of kin, citing the Privacy Act. "They've been ringing me twice every week for the last month," her sister said. "Our whole family is disgusted that a government department, with so many resources, can't see my sister died three years ago." She told the ministry a month ago that her sister was dead. "I thought that would be the end of it, but then I got called by someone else who said I needed to provide the death certificate as proof." Helen Mojel of the ministry was unable to confirm its policy on how to collect fines from dead people. Daily News
