I've followed this post because of how rare this addiction is, and finding others with this problem made me feel less weird and more educated about it. I had the unfortunate experience of being admitted to the hospital through the ER, my hemoglobin was at a 5 -I had to have a blood transfusion. After receiving 2 units of blood, it's still a low 7. I'm afraid to admit my strange addiction to my MD, so they're testing me almost weekly to find out why this is happening. Embarrassment is holding me back, but I will at least take my iron meds and pray this turns around for me. My addiction and love for mothballs haven't changed, and I feel helpless. But I'm hoping as my health improves that these cravings will stop. It's so hard though.

I've been struggling with my addiction for over 20+yrs on and off. When I was about 7/8/9 I remember taking the toilet bowl freshners and enjoying the smell. I'd smell it real quick then go outside to play. Then after the death of my daughter I worked in a hospital for a short time .when I walked in that bathroom the smell hit me and I found it. It was a big pink block ,I stole it. I use to chip little pieces off it wrap it in tissue .soon that wasn't enough so I'd put it on a heater or iron. This way it would melt on the tissue, it was stronger this way. I moved around a lot (homeless )so I guess I lost interest but once in a whIle if I saw the toilet freshner in the supermarket I would buy it.then I stopped for yrs.it seems like once my grandmother passed away I picked up the habit again. My sis said she had a carving for mothballs when she was pregnant. It's not Crack or herion so I don't want to go to an NA MEETING. Seeing that teens huff is embarrassing to me because I'm a grown adult yet this is my addiction. I've tried to stop a million times.I read the warning labels on the box. I researched it online.I know the harm it causes yet I still do it. The high makes no sense to me .It makes my mouth water but I don't eat or chew it .I guess when I'm huffing I'm not thinking about anything else.I just love love love the smell.I huff at work so everything smells like mouthballs,my uniform, my book bag. They keep it at my job.one time I went 28 days no huffing, now I'm 9days clean.

Yes, I still have stress and it's still a trigger for the cravings. I'm almost out of them now, and I don't like how the ones in the stores taste. So, I think once my supply is gone I'll just quit. The kind I like haven't been manufactured in years, so I doubt I'll find anymore....which is good.

I haven't huffed in a few days maybe a week but that doesn't mean the craving is gone. My job usually keeps some in the bathroom ,I haven't seen any lately that's the only reason why I haven't huffed. I can go to the store and buy some but they will recognize me. Yes I've gone to the same stores so many times that the store clerk's recognize me. That shame keeps me out so that's a good thing but it doesn't keep me out of the store for long. I don't huff at home anymore because I'm hiding my huffing from my bf.i want to seek help but I'm ashamed of my addiction

What makes me huff ,use month balls as an inhalatan? I don't have to think about my problems or life. All I think about is getting it, then how I'm going to melt it down. I have to be careful. I use a heater and a napkin to mop the melted moth then I huff it for about 10 seconds and do it over again.

I like melting them in a jar on a candle warmer. It's like liquid heaven, I would inhale deeply and be in ecstasy. I would also dip and soak a paper towel in it and put it over my mouth and breath it in. I know it's horrible for me but I cannot stop.

Please seek help you are not alone, whatever you do do not eat them. If you crave them you could have a eating disorder or a deficiency in you diet. I lost one of the most important person in my life due to this. There is help be honest.. open with your doctor and your family. If you consume them it causes brain damage and can lead to death. NO ONE tells you this because it's rare thing. Trust your instincts mothballs contain naphthalene it is a poison even smelling them can can make you anemic. Because you are exposing yourself to foreign chemicals. Please I beg you to talk to a professional. If I can help someone not go through the heart break I went through losing my best friend I will continue advocating. Stay strong, take care of yourself.

Thank you for sharing, this is the first of heard of death from mothballs. I'm addictive to smelling them and there's lots of people on here that have been addicted for years. I will put in more effort to try and quit. I care about my health and want to be free of this disease, it's so hard but maybe knowing you really can die from it, it will make me think twice. Thank you.
