I understand completely that feeling...just a hint of the smell and I go full on crave mode. It's like if I smell them, I must grab a handful to chew some. I just ordered some online a few days ago, because I'm always looking for the original brand that was discontinued....and I find them once or twice a year. I know they won't last though, because I'll be sneaking off to the bathroom every chance I get....especially since it's so rare to get my hands on this particular kind that i love so much. Even with my iron under control, I've noticed that it didn't dull my cravings this time around. At this point, i don't know what (if anything) will ever change my addiction to these things. And sadly, i get immensely satisfied when i chew them, which only encourages the addictive behavior. It's definitely a slippery slope.

Am I the only one who has a preference on what type of mothballs I buy?

I do! I prefer the Enoz old fashioned mothballs, the ones that come in a box loose with the plastic wrap on the outside. They are the best, and I just happened to find a box recently...I'm trying to go slow so that I don't run out so quickly...but they're so good and perfect. Absolutely the best on the market, pure naphthalene. My mouth waters just talking about them.

Have you been able to slow down your hiding out stop?

I have been finding them online alot lately, and it's making it so hard to slow down or stop. If i find them, I'm running to get my card to order them. Then i run out and tell myself I'm quitting. This is such a helpless feeling, and being so embarassed to discuss it with anyone makes the battle even more difficult. I wish id never started down this road, I never imagined i wouldn't have the strength and willpower to stop. Starting was easy. Smfh. I really need help.

I was so hopeful about ending my strange addiction to chewing mothballs, but my landlord has put them outside in the yard to keep the racoons and stray cats and dogs away. Now, when I open my door the smell hits me and I immediately go to the bathroom to chew a couple of handfuls. I really hope they dissipate quickly, then I'll hopefully be able to contain my habit better.

There were just a bunch of them on Ebay, someone listed about 70 boxes. People were getting them left and right. I wondered to myself if those were addicted ppl and possibly anyone from this post? They were gone so quickly, and they weren't even super cheap....but they were the old ones that they stopped making some years back. Most ppl just buy the new ones, they are alot cheaper and all over Ebay AND stores. I'm almost sure those were bought by ppl with this strange addiction, but it's a mystery.

Try a substitute like mint sweets or place mint flavoured chewing gum in your purse instead of the moth balls. That's what I am doing now and it seems to be working.

Idk if this will help, but I'm willing to try anything at this point. My Doctors are testing me constantly in an attempt to figure out why my anemia is so severe, and I'm so afraid to admit that it's my addiction to naphthalene...so I have to stop in order to get it under control. I love the smell, I crave the taste constantly...but my health is far more important. I know this is going to be so damn hard, but I can't keep going down this road. I'm tired of being sick, I'm tired of blood transfusions, and I'm tired of the shame that comes with all of this.

Hard to stop loving the taste, idk if I can stop. Chewing them feels good, and relieving.

Came here because I'm feeling alone, and embarrassed about this mothball addiction. I've been buying mothballs from everywhere, even finding the discontinued original Enoz brand lately. Colored, heart shaped, you name it. I'm still chewing them, even though my anemia has improved. I hoped the cravings would go away, but here I am. Still struggling. Just came to vent in a safe space, even if no one sees this I already feel better.

Are there any groups for naphthalene addiction? I have checked the internet, and this page is the closest thing that I've found. I read through every post, so I know that I'm not alone in my suffering. If you have any information, please reply to this message. I sought help from my doctor after decades of dealing with this in secrecy, but it didn't go anywhere. After my iron became normal, she assumed I was okay. But I still crave mothballs, and I still chew them. Please help if you can, thank you.

The hardest part about sniffing moth balls is pulling their little legs apart

I know you wrote this over a year ago but I just wanted to tell you that I hope you’re doing alright. I have a suggestion that you switch to using lavender essential oils which you can use. Just buy a diffuser for the oils (very affordable) and have that going all over the house instead of the lavender moth balls. Moth balls cause cancer so it’s really sad that they even still sell them. I hope the best for you!
