Internal inner thigh cramps... along the bone...crippling for fifteen minutes. Late night hour or two after retiring.  Most common link is if I get high glucose before bed from late snacks or dinner and take pen booster.  90 minutes later as it is bringing glucose down too quickly (say 240-130 or lower) seems like that triggers these.  Chug of OJ seems to ease them sooner IF I can hobble to the kitchen.  Better evening glucose control avoiding booster necessity is "solution"

OMG...im so glad I am not alone with these leg cramps.  Everytime I talk to someone about it all they say is "you need more potassium".  It literally feels like the muscle is ripping away from the bone and I only get these cramps in my inner thighs.  I have not been able to find a way to help make these cramps go away.  Sometimes I will have them 3-4 times in the same night.  The first time I had one was during the last trimester when I was pregnant with my daughter 4 years ago and then I hardly had them but it seems like I get them more and more over the last year. I wish there was a known reason as to why these cramps occur.

I had experienced these excruciating thigh cramps in the middle of the night about 3x--the pain was so bad I was on the brink of fainting, and I consider myself having a very high threshhold for pain.  My Dr. suggested I begin taking magnesium supplements every day.  It took a while but I haven't had another one (fingers crossed) for a couple months, so maybe he's onto something?  It's worth a try as these supplements are very inexpensive.  Just check w/a Dr. first to be sure it's OK.

I tried this Stop Cramping product made by the Amish and the bottle says it stops the cramps in 1 minute. Tastes like vinegar. It worked for me. I try to put hot water on the legs by sitting at the edge of the tub and it helps, although sometimes the cramps come back. Since I gave my relative my bottle, I also tried ElectroMIX, which has the electrolytes you mentioned. It helped right away. Don't know if it will work for you, but you can try...

I am a gastric bypass patient, and too have experienced these inner thigh spasms for close to 3 agonizing years amongst many other spasms including the shin, calf I can handle, shin is a differenct animal altogether..  After 3 primary care physicians and numerous specialists I went to a kiniesiolgist - homeopathic doctor who told me I was vitamin deficient due to my surgery.   i now take B12 2 x a week, 50K 2 x a week of Vitamin d, monthly iron infusions for anemia... plus potassium, magnesium and calcium...  I was diagnosed malabsosrbative, whereas your body does not get the nutrients from the foods you eat and these spasms occur.  I lost a lot of muscle mass during these 3 years and am now regaining strenghth.  I went to a blood and cancer doctor who dove into my blood levels, past the standard CBC and metabolic panel whereas she found my deficienies... I can now walk without my legs  cramping into cement poles, I can sleep and not awake in a fetal position in pain, I can stand up from sitting without having to wait til the spasm goes away.... you may not have all these deficiencies, but I'm sure there is some vitamin you are lacking that causes these spasms.  my sympathy to anyone that is having them.  I hope I have helped someone out there... go and get that blood tested for iron saturation, ferritin, and your vitamin contents in your blood.... it's worth the time and cost... I lost 3 years of going no where and now need to make up for that time. good luck out there.

Jan 12, 2012....I just found this post and was relieved to know i was NOT alone. Same intense inner thigh spasm that you all describe. I am also over weight, but no bulging disc. It has happened day or night.  I also suspect the recliner has had a contribution to the events, but not always. Some of these posts are so old, i dont know who will see this. I wish we could all band together, find the commonalities and find our own fixes. I have laid in bed screaming (i live alone) and the only thing i can think to do is to 'time it'. Kind of like labor pains. Since i now know they only last about 6-7 minutes (which feels like forever), I get some comfort in knowing that it will soon subside on its own. You all have noticed that they do subside regardless of what you do.??  So, instead of 'fighting it', I now 'go with it' and pull my leg or knee up toward my chest. It still hurts, but not as bad and i watch the clock.  Recently, I had just gotten out of bed and was already standing when it came on and i forced it to straighten. One of you said...'its going to hurt if you stretch it or not'. That was my thought this particular day and i was amazed that i won. but, every time i tried to bend the leg, it would start to cramp again. I felt like there was a demon trying to take control of my leg. I fought valiantly and just this once i won. only problem was, i had to go potty. I was determined to try to 'win' the battle over control of my leg and ignored the consequences of my decision.  I am going to look through the rest of these posts and see if anyone has set up a 'Common Area' where we can compare notes. If i dont find one, i will set up a Facebook page and call it.... Leg Pain Lunacy..... Hope to see you there.

Duh! Okay, I see that this IS a community place for us to share experiences. Disregard the FB plan. But you have to agree it is Leg Pain Lunacy. I will share that I also have the Shin cramps and the toes curling at times. My drs have said.." oh, your just having the cramps people get when they get older. NOT!! those of you on this post understand the difference. There is some comfort just knowing I am not alone. Re; Vitamin and minerals. I do believe there are mineral deficiencies. I supplement minerals in a couple of different ways, but sometimes i forget, or get out of the habit. The cramps are so random, i am never sure if the supplements help.

I just reread all the posts i could find and i did see something in common in a few.....the glucose thing. I just got diagnosed diabetic, and i used to eat tons of treats before bed. Now i eat different. Have you changed your night snacks? are you still getting the killer spasms?

I want to find out what the commonality is with all these people, including me, who get these killer cramps. Our doctors just brush it off.

Hi, Jennifer, I would like to know a reason too. Let me ask, "are you a diabetic." have you ever been tested for it. Did you have gestational diabeties when you were pregnant. I have had these same cramps for years. would like to find a commonality. Let me know please. Thank you. Sandy D

The one thing I can say is I'm not a diabetic and sugar has no part in my issues.  Having been on my current regiment of supplements my only spasm now comes from dehydration, being mal absorpative does that to you... I'm now in tortureous physical therapy as the spasms I've incurred over the last 4 years have pinched nerves, progress is being made...I can sit it the indian position for the first time in years.  and a laugh, they actually manipulated my muscle with massage therapy (MLD) and use a plunger to lift the muscle hoping to release it from the other muscle that is pinching my nerve.  quite the experience.  my biggest area is the parafomas pinching near the sciatica... but the spasms have been curtailed for now...  good luck one and all

Sorry to say I am not diabetic nor have I ever been. Only thing I can think of is sometimes I indulge in before-bedtime snack, but not always. I started exercizing & avoiding before-bedtime snacks plus taking magnesium supplements (dr's orders). So far so good (but have my fingers crossed that I will have no more spasms! ) Have never had anything as bad as those spasms (including childbirth).

Thanks for responding. Looks like the victims (us) have to find the common denominator. there must be one. I have been supplementing with a new product and as long as i remember it during the day, it seems to keep the spasms away. But i have thought that about other things too. THEN BAM!! it bites me again. they are horrid. i agree. worst than childbirth.

Teree, I too have the same spasms and had one last night that had

me paralized for 13 minutes. It is usually on my left side although I

have had a few on the right side. Usually at nite but have experience

a couple during the day. It happens on the inner thigh and sometimes

goes into my pelvic area. I have been to 7 doctors and they can't help me.

I have had MRI's, doppler scan and still nothing. I have been suffering for nearly 12 years. Gatorade and tonic sometimes help but would love to get to the bottom of this. How often and how long does the spasm last? After a spasm, my thigh is sore for a few days.

I have been suffering with inner thigh cramps for a few years and found that it is always after working hard or exercising. I think it could be a lack of water so I'm trying to drink more fluids.
