Please don't disregard my post simply because I am new to this forum. I have had HSV for many many years and struggled with monthly outbreaks that severely inhibited my ability to do much of anything. My sex life was almost nonexistent because the ob's would last a week then healing for a week or more. I was extremely depressed and becoming more and more reclusive since I felt so horrible most of the time.
After doing many many hours (probably weeks) of reseach on the internet, and filtering through all the boloney that is out there, I read of some people having success with l-lysine. I decided to try it since I had already tried everything under the sun.
I have been taking a combination of l-lysine and vitamin c (no other vitamins) for almost 6 months. I take l-lysine hydrochloride 500mg tab and vitamin c 500mg tab. I take a maintenence dose of 500mg lysine and 1000mg vit c. Whenever I feel an ob coming on or during my premenstral week (my classic ob time, for years) I take 1000mg lysine and 2000mg vit c.
I have been outbreak free since I began this routine. For me, this is a MIRACLE! I am sure that eventually, I may have another ob, but for now, to be able to live my life, enjoy my body, have a healthy sex life in my marriage, really, it has changed my life.
This is the first time that I have openly discussed this issue and in such a public manner. But I felt that maybe now was the time to share my success in hopes of helping someone else. I am not a doctor, I'm just a woman who wants to help. HSV was devastating to me and at some points in the past, I didn't know if I could go on like that (having maybe a week out of every month where I felt ok, not good, but ok). By taking these two relatively cheap supplements, my HSV is under control and I am able to live a happier much more fulfilling life. My focus can be on my family and finding joy rather than how much pain I am in.
One more important note, the higher doses of lysine shouldn't be taken for long periods of time. I don't recall what damage it can do, maybe liver? When I take the higher dose, it is only for a few days.
Sorry, and one more very important thing that I forgot to add was that I almost never eat chocolate. I can't stay away from the soda and coffee and should eat more foods that are higher in lysine and lower in arginine, but chocolate is a definite trigger. If I do have some, it will be one small piece and never more than once a month. Try a quick search for which things are high in arginine and lysine. I reallty hope this helps someone else. Hope you all have a wonderful day! I look forward to any responses I may get here.

Great tips! I try to keep the sugar down and keep the chocolate to almost none, but it's so hard for me to imagine going vegetarian. I have been trying to eat healthier in general and drink more water (i am a coffee and soda drinker!). Oh and trying to make sure I get enough sleep helps too :)
