Hi, I'm 17 and my right thumb has been numb for 5 days now. I can feel a numb tingly sensation whenever I touch the very base of my thumb on the bony part which shoots right up to the pad on the edge of my thumb. I can also feel something vain-like flex loosely inside the base of my thumb when I touch it. I'm pretty worried because this has never happened to me before. This numbness has started since last Wednesday when I was cutting up cardboard with scissors and overdid it... I seriously regret it now, because I think I have some kind of nerve damage, but I really don't know. :'( If anyone could please share some advice with me on how to fix it and treat this I would be so thankful and would really appreciate it. :-D

I am definitely not keen on going to the doctors either... My thumb works perfectly normal and I have full movement of it. It's just numb and tingly that's all.

Hi, I am experiencing a lot of the same symtoms, about a week ago I had severe sharp wrist pain a long the tendon, which i presumed was just an overuse injury as I do a lot of sport. A few days went on and the wrist pain became less severe but I started getting pins and needles down my thumb when performing certain actions. Now the inside of my thumb is completely numb and I'm still getting the pins and needles. When I press on the bone at the bottom of my thumb I get shooting pins and needles down my thumb.
if anyone has any advice about what to do that would be great, or what this could be? I'm only 22 years old and already have a lot of problems with one ankle so I hope it's nothing serious!
thank you,
Amy Palmer

Ruthie, guest,
The exact same thing happened to me three days ago. i was (stupidly) cutting tall grasses in my garden with a paper scissors and I felt a sharp tweak in the spot where the thumb connects to the palm. Afterwards, the tip of my thumb was numb and has remained so. I suspect a damaged tendon impinging on a nerve. Thus, the tennis elbow analogy. Tennis elbow is caused by a swollen tendon (it's also called "tendenitis). my guess is that we are all suffering tendinitis of the thumb. Poke around at the base of your thumb and I bet you will feel pain like I do in a specific spot there. That's where the tendon is.

Woke up this morning with my thumb numb. I was cutting peel n stick floor tile yesterday with a pair of scissors, so it sounds like that may be the culprit. I hope it goes away soon. It's REALLY annoying!
