i have a friend who is 18 and she has suffered these strange symptoms for some time. started almost sudden and unexplainable. started with an attack that caused her to start gnawing at her thumb in an irrational way. this is the most severe of moments i have heard of but there has been a large amount of distance between us in the last 2 yrs. they have been going on since i met her. ive witness her body go numb simply from the buzz of an microwave alarm. her senior year she suffered from attacks every couple of days i believe. she spent at least the quarter of the year in the hospital. she has been given diagnosis after diagnosis from dr's and psychiatrists, at one point had a psycologist but they treated her as a psychiatrist would. she's been all sorts of different medicines and im starting to get sick of it really. she has to take online classes in college just so she doesn't have to worry bout missing classes due to her symptoms. i was hoping maybe somebody would have a clue to what this is... willing to hear any responses

Your friend may have symptoms of hypochondria, which is characterized by obsessive compulsive disorder (constant thumb gnawing), clinical depression (requiring hospitalization and psychiatric care), somatization disorder (body went numb from the buzz of microwave alarm), phobias, and anxiety disorder (worrying about missing classes).
