I am having rotator cuff surgery in ten days. I talked to my pain doc and she said that I could stay on the suboxone through surgery. I only take 0.2 mg a day as I am extremely sensitive to opiate medication. I am afraid to even tell my surgeon that I am on suboxone. When I had sinus surgery last year, my doctor decided that I didn't need ANY pain medication because I was on suboxone. I begged him to call my pain doc, but he refused. Reading this thread of posts, doesn't inspire confidence.

Insist on speaking to the anesthesiologist before surgery. My son is on Suboxone and had hip replacement surgery and though the pain wasn't perfectly managed, it was like day and night from his previously poorly pain managed surgery. Do not assume any doctor understands Suboxone. The physicians who prescribe Suboxone don't always understand how it works, hence the terrible advice of "stop a few days before and after, and you will be fine." You will need much much more pain medication after the surgery due to opiate tolerance, and you will need medication immediately before and after surgery to avoid going into withdrawals. A big problem with hip surgery is that you will probably have spinal anesthesia and not need pain medication to control pain, but you WILL need it to prevent withdrawals. Say this several times to your anesthesiologist, and make them repeat this to you, and show you the order. Be prepared for staff to treat you like a drug addict, but insist on your rights. You can only do this if it is written as an order. You will not feel like fighting after surgery, believe me. PS though I cant recommend it, he took extra pain meds in his suitcase. He was not ready to trust after the first nightmare.

You have absolutely made me change my mind to having my spinal surgery. I was extremely scared and ready to cancel the surgery after reading all these nightmares..alot of these people should use the powerful-ness of their mind and that will also help things to go right for them......lol just communicate with the surgeon and the doctors and let them be aware of your amount of intake and do some homework (like I have done) and print some of this for your surgeon to view and hopefully they will prescribe what you need to help your pain be tolerable.

Did you take your suboxone the morning of surgery and did the pain meds work for you... I'm going for surgery on Wednesday and still have not stopped my suboxone which my doc told me not too.

have spin fusion next week, been on suboxone for about 2.5 months.. before that opana er for a while I had been on opiates before only to stop in order to check my base pain level, however every time the pain got worse... finally stopped for the sub, now i am taking down notes and doing the ' inform your surgeon beforehand deal, they will listen" i have mentioned it o him so hopefully it works out thats for sure. will get back to you if any cares lol

Patients on Suboxone will have higher opiates needs during and after surgery, but this drug has no effect on inhaled anesthetic gases or drugs like Propofol that are utilized to induce anesthesia. Neither are opiate based drugs.

Just tell the doctor your on them and they will up ur pain meds. I just had surgery for the same reason two yrs ago. You will be good!

my wife just had surgery two days ago and the anethetic did not work! they did not use a local where they installed the feeding tube. she asked them to stop several times. the suboxone stoped the anethetic. now what should we do?

You are incorrect. The naloxone is in suboxone so the user will go instantly into withdrawal if the suboxone is injected. Nnaloxone is a total opiate antagonist which only works when injected directly into the bloodstream. The buprenorphine is the active ingredient in suboxone, subutex, zubsolv and buprenex. Buprenorphine is a partial opiate antagonist and a partial opiate antagonist meaning is attaches fully to the opiate receptors while blocking any other opiate or opiod from attaching ergo, it is the buprenorphine that blocks other opiate or opiate like substances. You must tell your doctor how much sub you are taking at least a few days before the surgery due to its extremely long half life (36 hours). Please be honest with your doctor.
