It is really very hard to tell about your heart pain when you sleep on left side and on back. Better you consult with Doctor.

I have been experiencing the problem for about a year and a half now...I do have irregular heartbeats (usually one per day, very strong) and then I've noticed the strange sensation when first waking up in the morning or anytime I lay down during the day. I"ve had a Halter monitor and two stress tests and the cardiologists haven't found any abnormalities. But it still causes me to have a lot of anxiety when it does occur. Thanks to all of you for sharing...it does help to know I'm not the only one with the problem.

I'm 27 and the first time I had a pain like this I was about 20. It took me years to find something on the internet that resembled my symptoms. Today was the first day I had symptoms like the ones you guys are describing. Its been a couple days of pain in the left side of my chest when I move of lay on my back or left side. Look up precordial catch syndrome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precordial_catch_syndrome . This sounds like what alot of you teenagers have. The symptoms I've been having today tho are more like Pericarditis http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pericarditis/DS00505/DSECTION=symptoms . Hope this helps. took me a long time to find that precordial catch info for some reason.

Pericarditis is possible for some people. It would be when you are lying flat or on your sides and is relieved by sitting up and leaning forward.
Mitral valve prolapse can also be a common cause of chest pain only while lying on the left side specifically. It can cause palpitations or tachycardia which can cause pain if the heart muscle receives blood (oxygen) irregularly.

Barrring any heart or lung conditions which were both ruled out for me after x-ray and scans, the most probable cause is the condition called Costochondritis. My doctor diagnosed this after all my other results came back neagitive. It is the inflammation in the joints between cartliages around the ribs. It causes the pain that most people have described here, particularly sharp pains at front of chest that tends to domoniate one side of your rib cage (left or right). It is not a dangerous condition although for many people it causes intense intermittent chest pain. I was given a prescription of anti-infalmmatories which eased the pain considerably. Unfortunatley there is no cure and they do not even know what causes it, however as i've mentioned the symptoms are treatable and this condotion is not life threatning.
It may also be something called Tietze syndrome which is very smillar to Costochondintis, but they pain is instead caused by swelling. Here is a link to both conditions if you think this might be relative to you.
I hope this is helpful and will ease any anxieties you might be having; knowing what I've got certainly did for me.
All the best
