If you are considering a hemroidectomy DON'T DO IT. This is worse than having babies all natural with no pain meds. I have had three babies. I'm 7 weeks into recovery and I still don't see an end to this night mare. The Doctor lied to me and said it would be up and around in 3-4 days or a week. LIAR LIAR LIAR.... When I woke up I was in severe pain and needed Morphine. I went home and thought I was going to die for the first 3 days I thought he accidently sewed my anus up. He prescribed Vicoden which by the way constapates you. When I had my first bowel movement I wanted to die. It was like passing rocks. The next 3 weeks was not much better. I relied heavly on sits bath and witch hazel & Tylenol x-tra strenght. Six weeks later I was able to have a bowel movement without crying. Now 7 weeks later no tears however I have extreme pain and lucky me I have 3 more hemroids. I will let them grow to my knees I will never have a hemroidectomy again....

Can someone help me. iam 10 weeks past my full hemroidectomy. I had 3 internal hemes removed on dec 14th, 2007. The doctor said he removed alot of tissue. also had a rectocele repair and bladder neck suspension doen at the same time. My butt still hurts when i have a bowel movement. the bleeding has subsided alot. some times i still have to take 1/2 a vicoden to make it through a work day. Doctor says everything is healing fine. There are still skin tags which i understand but the anus seems to bulge out. could this still be swelling. and if it is how long has it lasted for some of you. Please answer i will be looking for you.

I had my surgery three days ago and finally had a successful movement this afternoon. It was painful but now I feel much better. My doctor suggested a high-fiber diet, bran muffins and metamucil, for the first days along with Senocot as a stool softener. That wasn't enough for me and I stopped eating yesterday. He also perscribed Oxycodone for pain and Lorazepam as a muscle relaxant. Neither worked well for me. The Oxycodone made me nauseous and dizzy with that sick mediciney feeling. Lorazepam put me to sleep. I found that Advil was better for me - I took four pills, ten to fifteen minutes before I used a Fleet's enema. Success :-) A quick warm sitz bath afterwards and the world is much better now. My understanding is that the first BM is the worst so I'm much relieved. I hope this works for you too. Good luck

I had a hem-ectomy and a fissurectomy 8 days ago. Initially, the Dr told me I would be able to return to work (desk job) the following Monday if I had the surgery done on Friday. He told me the pain would be similar to recovering after child birth. Let me tell you, the pain after childbirth was nothing compared to this and I just had a baby 10 months ago. I tried returning to work 6 days after surgery and only made it 2 hours. Late that afternoon I was in so much pain I was crying, screaming, moaning, etc. and my 16 and 14 year old daughters were mortified. They seriously thought I was dying and nearly called 911. Thankfully, they called my sister in law instead who called my Dr who called me in an RX for generic Ketorolac. Within 5 minutes, I felt 80 % better (ask your dr for this - it is the wonder drug and doesn't take over your mind and body like most pain meds do). I was actually able to hold a normal conversation without wanting to cry and blubber in pain. The following day was my 1 week follow up (yesterday) and they took out the major stitches and showed me the picture of what he ended up calling "major surgery" - it was only supposed to be a simple "procedure". If I had seen that picture before yesterday, I would have never gotten out of bed. It looked like something from a horror movie. I don't know how many stitches there were, but from the looks of the 3 huge incisions they made, the picture looked like there were probably about 40 stitches in my behind. No wonder it hurt so badly. He said when they got in to do the fissuectomy, they discovered 3 hems under the fissure as well as other hems on the inside and outside. Therefore, the moral of the story is to ask your doctor before you leave the office if they ended up doing more than was originally discussed. If I had known the pain I would go through in the aftermath, I would have never elected to do this surgery willfully - at least until my 10 month old baby was much older. 3/29/08

My sympathies go to you for your fissurectomy. I had extensive hemorrhoids and the surgical recovery was HORRID. When I returned for my post-op exam (6 weeks later) I overheard a patient in the exam room next to mine yelling and groaning then sobbing like a child. He was getting a rectal exam at the time. I heard the surgeon explain to him, "You have internal hemorrhoids but that is not what was causing the pain in my examination of your rectum. You have a fissure beneath the lining of your rectum and this is oftentimes extremely painful." <- This coming from a doctor who told me my surgery was going to be simple and did not warn about any pain.
Then he went on to explain to the patient (a healthy, young male) that the surgery was going to be a simple procedure and he would be discharged in the same day.
Good luck on your recovery. As they say, "Time heals all wounds." For colorectal patients this needs to be modified somewhat: "Time heals all wounds but the chances are you're not going to forget this healing."

Man, I wish I would of read all these things before I decided to have my surgery done. Its been a month tomorrow since I had the painfully agonizing pph surgery as well as a prolapsed rectum. Recovery time takes forever. Even though my doctor told me as well it wouldnt hurt and i would be back at work that monday as well. Isn't it funny how doctors lie to you. I had a c-section 4 years ago, and nothing compares to pph/prolapsed rectum surgery. I have been on so many types of meds (creams ointments, pain killers, nsaids) and i still feel like sh*t, its not the pain that bothers me, it's just that i feel like i still have hemmrhoids (buring/itching/swelling feeling) Is this normal to still feel this way? i am with everyone else, i do not reccommend it for anyone, just deal w/ your hemmrhoids, they suck but its 10 times better than this. And when does the blood stop? Its been a month tomorrow and I still have blood, is this normal this far out? Again, i'm w/ you all on the never have this procedure done thing!
Thanks for listening!

Hotdaisy05 I wish I would have read these things as well before I decided to have my surgery done. I had surgery 11/6/08 5 days ago. The pain is horrific. I wish the doctors would be more honest with patients on how long it actually takes to recover from this surgery. I was suppose to return to work today but i was in so much pain when i woke up this morning i could barely walk. I can say that the swelling has gone done tremendously. I found that sitz baths really help the pain after a bowel movement, but water has to be very warm for full 15 minutes. I was advised to eat high fiber diet, perscribed loratab for pain. When i came home from hospital i was fine, took shower slept like a baby. The next day my pain was so severe i cried, called doc he prescribed a narcotic, believe is vicadin it was much better. The pain was still there but more manageable. The worst thing is having a BM. It must be really soft not to experience any pain or bleeding. On the forth day i kept feeling pressure at my rectum like i had to go but its just your swollen tissues. Like a id**t i took magnesium citrate, saline laxative to help me go. Well only a little came out it was so painful you cannot even describe it. But the next day it was so soft i didnt even feel it come out. I believe drinking plenty of water and eating high fiber foods works. The bad thing is gas, constant pressure at rectum especially after eating. Now there is 1 thing that gave me comfort after a BM, you must get some guaze pads (lots of them) to apply this soothing moisturizing lotion to anal area after BM. It's called Balneol all pharmacies do not carry item but can be ordered by local pharmachy. If you apply that it gives you soothing relief till you can soak in that warm water. It's a wonderful cleansing technique. Also use alchohol free baby wipes to clean area after BM then apply Balneol Lotion. Also you must use this cream after each shower and after applying lotion called Tronolane cream. It prevents itching and rapid pain relief. Make sure you drink Metamucil (pink lemonade) morning and evening and take stool softerner at night Peri-Colace with laxative recommended. But I would not recommend this to anyone unless you can take two months off of work and have someone to wait on you hand and foot for first two weeks. You must have a high tolerance for pain to survive. Hopefully it's worth it in the end of the healing process how ever long that takes me.

My doc was straight up telling me i wouldnt be happy for 2-4 weeks afterwards that it would hurt and ill get pain meds, so all of your doctors not telling you sh*t im happy i came here to, kinda get educated before i have my surgery the 18th. Do you think i should ask the doc about valium for a muscle relaxant. If he cant or wont, would Klonopin work as well because i can get klonopin from a friend......

My hemorrhoidectomy was 5 days ago, Thursday, its Monday now. A fairly uncomplicated proceedure rectifying three bleeding hemorrhoids that travelled inside and out.
I make no bones about it the pain on recovery is horrendous ! But there are things you can do that will help and each day is one day closer to recovery. So here's some things that will help alleviate the pain and aid your recouperation.
Use all the pain killers in hospital that you are allowed to have. Every hour when your pain killers are due tell them you want them. They are there for you - USE THEM ! I was able to have Valium (6 hourly for muscles spasm and to help sleeping) Endone (4 hrly for pain) Panadol (liquid, given intraveneously and an absolute godsend and knocked the pain on the head for 6 hours) panadol tablets x 2 every 6 hours. Coloyxl (with senna) for stool softeners x2 twice daily.
Get your prescriptions filled before you go home because by the time you get there you are going to need a dose of something. Organise your tablet regime and stick to it weather you need it or not for the first few days (I'd say a week). You do not need to be a hero and the pain is not worth well.... the pain... when you have tablets to help. I have Valium, Endone, panadol and Coloxyl.
I also used this gel that they put on your skin when about to insert tubes its a local anasetic type of stuff, I had to ask for it at the hospital though, Lignocaine 2% Gel with Clorhexidine gently put on the fissure whenever you want, it lubricates and deadens the area a little and every little bit helps, right? I managed to get four tubes of this to bring home from the hospital because I don't think you can buy it from the chemist. One tube, with caution can last 2 days. You don't need much.
Lots of showers and I am lucky enough to have a bidet for bum baths but others could use a plastic bowl that they bought in preparation before the op. I use stacks of salt. $7.00 for a large bag from the swimming pool shop. Hey, we swim in it right? So how unhygenic can it be? And its cheap so you can use heaps. Sit in that thing for as long as you can. Each day it will get easier.
Now pooping is way scary. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. Your poop will be soft because you have been taking the stool softener Coloxyl regularly and for at least 2 weeks prior to the operation you were on a high fibre, low fat diet, and you still are on that diet and you are drinking loads of water, right ?! So your stools are soft.
I didn't poop for 5 days and I was getting worried of impaction (jees what could be worse?) so today I got a friend to get me some stuff from the chemist. 1) Anusol. These are little tabs you put in your butt and it relieves the pain ( not eliminates the pain but every little bit helps, right?) Ya stick these supositories in after a bowel movement or when you can feel the pain coming back. 2) Microlax. These are little vials of liquid that you put in your butt (all the way, it does not hurt 'cos the tube is small) and then squeeze the bottle, squirting the liquid up there inside. It only takes a half hour to work so be close to the loo when you do it.
I wont lie to you it hurts to poop but not as bad as you think it is going to hurt. The thought actually hurts more than the pain. When you are pooping do not cut it off with a spinctre spasm, let it happen, you're half way there, you do not want to have to start again. Do you? Don't expect elephant poohs right off, just a couple of small ones will do to start. (If more wants to come , let it) the hardest part is knowing when you are finished because your rectum is aching and burning anyway. The best thing to do it to step into the shower, if more wants to come it will (and you are in the shower) if not, the pain will let up a little. Thing is you don't not want to be sitting straining that spinctre muscle on the loo especially if nothing is going to happen, so go to the shower.
Now clean up with a shower and a salt bath afterwards the salt eases the stinging pain and speeds up the healing process of the stitches. Dry off. Take the tablets you are due to have and go to bed. Put in an Anusol, put on some gel and slip on your ice pack. Get ready to go to sleep for an hour or two.
ICE PACKS - are manner from the Healing Angels. Make a hundred of them before your op and put them in your freezer. Two little ice cubes tied up in a cheap little sandwich bag (plastic). Now get one out of the freezer, wrap it in a thin cloth (you cut up 100 of these squares too before your op, about 4-5 inch squares) and put it on your rectum. Right on the spot. The gel is a bit of a barrier so the cold ice wont burn and so is the plastic and the cloth. The relief is amazing. Sleep inducing amazing.
I take my tablets right on time, I stay in bed (take a five minute walk about every two hours to try to stop all those other complications from lying in bed) and I do all this above.
Gees PS ! Do not ask visitors to come see you. You will fart and you cant (and you don't want to) stop them. They are absolutely putrid and the whole house smells of your farts (I am sure of it) you do not want poor visitors subject to that. Even though they hurt a little the relief after a fart is wonderful. Enjoy it, you have precious little to enjoy at the moment. Learn what created your piles in the first place and learn how to avoid doing that ever again.
Each day is a little better than the day before. I am surviving and you will too. I promise.

I had mine on Jan 4th...what a joke the dr. told me within 7 days I would be hitting the gym again...its now jan 25 and Im still hurting. I have never ever had pain like this before..I really feel that this was a waste of time money and days off from work. I would never tell anyone have this done.

UPDATE: Six days on. I have discovered that the walks are not helping, they actually make the next day really painful so I am staying in bed now. Also after a really painful BM yesterday I bled - a lot. Maybe lost a stitch or something but today the pain has let up and my morning BM was not anywhere near as painful, the bleeding almost stopped again. I am starting to ease back on medication too, taking it when I need it rather than on the due hour. Prior to the op I bought packets and packets of baby wipes they are really good for clean ups.

I hurt! Worst pain of my life. Worse than labor, worse than kidney stones. Today is 7 days since surgery and I finally feel better. Not good, but better. At least I am not crying and writhing and wanting to tear my hair out following a BM today. Valium definitely helped anal spasms. Percocet helped but not enough to risk constipation. My consolation is that the hemmorhoids pain was not going away and eventually this will. Praying for all of us!

Post-Hemorrhoidectomy pain is just insane, especially for the first couple of weeks. It's inevitable unfortunately. Furthermore, too much painkillers make you constipate as well which kind of defeats the whole purpose, which is probably the reason why the doctor chose not to prescribe. Try to do some warm sitz bath or ice packs to numb the pain.

I just had pph surgery as well as two external hemmerhoids removed (with a scalple) on the 6th of Aug. I left the hospital with NO PAIN but just pressure. HEre i am two days later with moderate pain and a bit of pressure. Im taking percocet and diazapam but they make me very sleepy. Late tonight i felt so good that i halved my percocet. Bad idea, within 2 hours i started to throb and was pretty sore. I took my other percocet half and things did not improve. I remember my doc telling me that a super hot bath is going to offer the most relief. I took a nice hot bath for about an hour constantly adding hot water about every 10 min. I was covered with sweat when i was done so i showered and got dried up. I feel fine right now. I have concluded that its not jst the skin where the sutures are and where the hemerhoid was that is traumatised by the proceduure. It is also pretty deep tissure where the doc seperated the skin from the muscle. (learned that on you tube) there was alot of poking and prodding and surely that cant feel good to the surrounding tissue. Later today im goin gto invest in a heading pad as well. I do believe there will be a certain amt of soreness that everyone having this procedule will have to endure but if you plan your day wisely. take it easy and rest and do the bath thing as oten as needed. i think you /we can manage out pain pretty well. I do believe that heat is the answer. A sitz bath only really treats a small area whereas a hot hot bath will relaz all the tissues involved. so far im glad i did it but yes its a pain in the ass....lol good luck to all.
