In October 2013 I had rotator cuff surgery; I now have hemi right sided diaphragmatic paralysis. I have been to two pulmonologist, both of which have said it is not going to "wake up". I dread going to bed at night because for the first few minutes I feel like I am suffocating. I do now wear a cpap machine. Right now I am struggling with depression and weight gain (which of course is the worse thing that I need). It just makes me so mad that I can't even cut my own grass anymore. I have considered a lawsuit, but as one doctor just told me - "I drew the short straw!"

I've had this same situation diag. 10yrs ago - I've just been retested (at my request) and found that now I have very
little left on the left side-right side was paralyzed in the beginning. They told me nothing can be done until the whole
diaphragm is useless. Then (maybe) there is a surgery to implant a small device (like a pace maker) to help stimulate
the lungs to fill with oxygen faster (more normal) so I won't have to be on oxygen 247 like I have been for the past
10yrs. I was trying to find a Specialist (if there is such a Dr.) who may have more info. or ideas to help me get better.
I'm 68 yrs old and was working for Dr's (office) when this happened to me - same as you, don't know how it started.
Good Luck and I hope you get answers a lot quicker then I - my next try is a Nerve Dr. who diag. me 10yrs ago!!!

Sounds familiar. I am a 60 year old healthy male who had rotator cuff arthroscopic surgery on my left shoulder Dec. 2014. When they gave me a shoulder block anesthetic they hit my phrenic nerve. For the first month I could not breathe lying flat on my back and bending over is difficult yet. I am now being treated to relieve asthma symptoms (but I wonder if the symptoms are really just from having a paralyzed diaphragm on my left lung). They also put me on a CPAP machine. The pulmunologist says that the nerve might repair its self in 12 - 18 months but there is nothing he can do.
I can't do any strenuous exercise without getting short of breath and my oxygen saturation levels sit at 88- 90 most of the time (I bought a finger sensor on the internet)

Hello my name is Clay. I was diagnosed with Bilateral Diaphragmatic Paralysis on April 4, 2011. Let me back up a little. I started getting sick around January of that year my Doctor thought it was this or that tried several types of Antibiotics and was getting worse. I drove shool bus for a living so on Monday April 4, 2011 I went to work not feeling very good but I did not want to use anymore of my sick time. Well after my morning route I was taking by ambulance to the Hospital in Roachester, NY. They admitted me and they ran lots of tests. The next day the lung doctor told me he thought I had a right diaphragm that was not working. Later after lots more testing he discovered that The right side Phrenic Nerve was dead which in turn the right Diaphragm was gone too. They also say that my left side is mostly gone it moves but not by much... I am on a Bipap and now the other day they told me I had asthma too. So I don't know where this is going but I still am doing ok with out having to be put on a respiratory system. Hope that is a long way down the road... Like 40 years... But what I would like to know is with having both of these problems is this the begining of the end for me?

I might have written this myself since I am experiencing exactly what you are describing. Doctors have said the same thing to me. I wonder how you are doing now, and if you actually had any surgical procedure done.

What kind of vitamin regimen do you speak of? I am suffering from the same situation.

YES, it's that annoying and frustrating - Dr.s' don't know why closed - 1/2, 9yrs ago, now almost all (2014) - I too have
experienced all (and more) of those problems - no cure, no help, just keep hanging in there. The experimental surgery from Ohio isn't covered under Medicare - it's VERY expensive out of pocket!!! Also no gauntness!! Please
keep in touch, maybe something will come up - GOD WILLING -hang in there. Sincerely Judy Lasky

I have been diagnosed with a paralyzed diaphragm 2 years ago. Are there any current treatments out there ?

I also have a paralized diaphram it didn't happen all at once I had open heart surgery in 2006 at that time my 02 level was at 56% when I reclined, at this time it is at 0% and I am on oxygen 24/7 I have seen 2 different lung doctors and they never offered any corrective measures.

I have this.too. On my left side. I don't know your situation, but my paralysis is nearing six months. If there isn't any sign of movement in two weeks, I'm most likely going to have the phrenic nerve repaired (grafted), so the diaphragm begins to move again.
