Wow! I finally found somewhere online that may be able to figure this out. Everything I read states it is normal and may never go away. I like all of you do not have any pain with the noise. It started roughly a year and a half after my L4-L5, L5-S1 Fusion. The best way for me to describe it to my wife at first (she couldn't hear it) was taking the back of your finger nail and clicking it down the threads of a bolt or screw. If i bend slow forward or backwards that's what it feels/sounds like to me. Since it started I have been able to find times when it's extra quiet and have her listen and she says. "Yes, it sounds like a squeak". I haven't called my doctor just yet. I will be calling this week to see what they say. I will post a reply on here when/if I get any information.

Thanks, Kevin

My Surgery was in 1993 and just two weeks ago (Jan. 2023) I started the sound, which does sound like gears on a 10 speed. No pain. It's loud. Is this the way it is going to be for the rest of my life?

I'm 7 years out from S1-L2 fusion. The first 6 months I creaked like a squeaky hardwood floorboard. But the bigger issue is that 6 weeks in, I developed excruciating pain in my left leg for 3 days that eventually radiated up to the surgical area in my back. That pain never went away. It has varying intensity. But anytime I do any work that requires putting my back into it, the muscles swell up, inflammation causes nerve impingement, nerve impingement causes back spasms, back spasm cause intense pain. Life depleting. I hope yours turns out better. If it doesn't feel right, complain long and loud. It's your life in the balance.

Hello, guest.

Given the complexity of your medical history and the recent lumbar fusion surgeries, it's understandable that there might be concerns and questions about new symptoms and experiences.

The "creaking" sensation you described could be due to a variety of factors, and it's essential to bring this up with your surgeon or physical therapist during your follow-up appointments. The creaking might be related to the hardware (screws, rods) used during the surgery or other structures in the spine. If the hardware is causing issues, your surgeon might need to further investigate the situation to determine the best course of action.

Releasing of the rod and pulling of screws are concerning signs, and it's good that the surgeon replaced the rod with a longer one. However, the cause of the initial creaking and the issues with the hardware should be thoroughly evaluated to prevent any further complications.

In the meantime, follow your surgeon's and physical therapist's instructions diligently, avoid any movements or activities that worsen your symptoms, and keep them informed of any changes or new symptoms you experience.

Hope everything will be resolved soon.
