I LOVE ICE too! I have always liked ice, but it just started getting annoying when we got a new fridge with an ice crusher.
No, you will not go through withdrawls or become more anemic as ice has nothing in it. You might however just find a different annoying habit. Ice eating is by far better than, say, smoking.
I too like my ice crushed and softend, but I use diet rootbeer to soften it. It's like eating a yummy fat free desert.
I also feel the gassy build up in my stomach. It is because when you crunch and swallow, you are also swallowing air along with the ice. I would say a side affect of eating ice.
I eat it ice for nerves. If I am not eating ice, I am putting something else into my mouth. Better ice than say...chocolate.
It is bad for your teeth. It causes them stress to be cold for so long and then heating and then cold and heating up. They definitly could chip. It doesn't hurt their enamel though.
My fingernails also turn blue...but my hands are always cold...not due to the ice. They have always been like that.
I am not enimic, but for all means, if you think you are, get in and take your iron. Health food stores make great iron pills that don't cause constipation. Your body needs blood to run properly....Very important!
I suppose my only question is have any of you found that your toungue has a permanent numbness to it or have you found any loss of taste? Along with the breakage of teeth and gas, I could see this as the only other side affect.
Oh...and the fact that it drives my husband crazy when we are trying to watch a movie......crunch, crunch, crunch....

I'm eating ice right now...I can't go a day without eating it. I even got an ice cube tray that makes tiny ice cubes (for water bottles). I eat those constantly.
I am anemic, have been for over 3 years. I try to take iron pills and multi-vitamins, but some days I forget. I have O-Neg blood and I feel really bad for not being able to donate it. I know it is needed.
I am a little scared for my teeth, but as many of you have said...at least I am eating ice and filling up on it instead of cake or something bad for me. I am over weight and trying to loose it. Ice helps me focus, believe it or not!
Do guys eat ice as much as women? I mean, I know anemia has a part, but do you think any guys eat ice just because?lol
Keep on crunchin'!

Eating ice in this manner may be due to iron deficiency. I started eating ice like crazy when I was pregnant and did not stop for over 15 years. I damaged my teeth as a result. I ended up getting a blood transfusion and that was the cure for me. I no longer have to eat the ice from drinks or go on midnight outings to buy ice. Eating food high in iron, or taking a good iron supplement may help. If that doesn't do it, see your doctor about the problem at least so you can save your teeth from damage.

I 've been eating ice since i got my first period and then they found out i was anemic so with iron suplement i was back in the normal for practically three years i 'd get my blood check every six months and nothing was wrong . before school ended i almost passed out ,blood pruesure up they almost had to call a ambulance .On the next monday since that happened on a friday i went to my doctor and it came to be that i was anemic again but it actually is called Thalasimia its ablod condition if you've gotten checked for anemia get them more frequent because it could mean you have thalasamia if you eat ice alot GET A BLOOD TEST.Also the reason for eating ice is that everyone knows water is H20 containg oxygen well ice contains more oxygen so our bodies are begging for oxygen and thas a way to get .Like a tree who needs water .

I've been eating ice off and on for years. I did notice that after taking iron for a few months th cravings went away. Now I am eating ice again crazy. My last blood work did not indicate enemia. Yet, my concern now is that i am having some GI problems. Some times diareah, sometimes constipation. I am concerned that i messed myself up eating ice. I am addicted and don't want to stop. Nevertheless, i wonder if the ice i eat is causing problems due to it being contaminated or cold ice isn't good for the stomach. I would stop if I knew for sure the ice was messing my stomach up.

For as long as I can remember I have always eaten ice. There have been times when I have not eaten it as much but there also have been times like now where I eat it alot. I wake up every day and I don't want coffee, I want ice. I am not anemic at all and my pregnancy was very normal. I just like to eat ice. I also love the smell of dirt. I live in west Texas and you can smell the dirt in the water and for some strange reason I love that smell as well. I also love the smell of fresh linen so go figure.

Cool, I never knew there were this many people with the same problem.
I thought I ate ice because I was too lazy to pour a glass of juice. 8-| It's easy, just go to the fridge and pop one into your mouth. But when I do get something to drink I usually eat the ice first.
I eat so many a day though, it's been worrying me ever since I heard that eating ice is bad for you and can mess with your brain or something. Anyone know if this true?
Yeah, Sonic ice is great. I also love their slushies. I never get brainfreeze though, no matter how fast or how much I eat.
But for a couple of years from time to time if I stand still for a long time, and especially if it's hot I get really dizzy and feel really sick and if I don't sit down, I'll pass out. :-(
My friends said that it was a lack of iron. So I think the dizziness and my ice cravings may all be because of that.

HI, I'm a 33 year old female and I love to eat ice. :-D I just help myself, I'm eating ice now lol. I love the frosted part of the ice. I have like 12 ice trays in my freeze, and I fill them with a lil hot water. No one is allowed to touch them unless there getting me some ice for me. I also have a bucket in my freeze that I fill up with ice. I time my ice, so that I know when it's ready. it's like I'm addicted to it, and no one understands why I do it. There be times that I eat so much ice my throat get sores like now and I still want to eat ice. Also I find myself so tired that all I want to do is sleep. I know my blood is low, I believe it comes from loss of blood doing my cycle. Can this be helped?

I am a 35 year old woman who for years as a teenager crunched on ice. When I was about 23 years old during a routine cleaning I had cracked a filling, so I stopped. When I had my first child in 2001 never craved ice then with my second in 2006 starting craving around the 7 month, but after she was born the craving went away. I breastfeed for 6 months and afterward, my cycle started back and was very heavy. I then started craving ice about two months later, it has been a year and a half now. I discovered that the fire department next to where I work has the best ice, I go over there at least 2 times a week and fill a bag of ice to put in our freezer, any that's left on Friday I take it home and start over on Monday. My oldest daughter tells me to stop and my youngest ask for ice. I really need to stop. I don't want my children to get addicted. I tell the guys at the Fire Department that I am there to get my fix. I am crunching on it now.

I am the mother of a 10 yr. old autistic son whom lately for the past month, has had a serious addiction to chomping on ice. I believe he is suffering from anemia but his Doc.'s appt. is not until 2 wks. from now. Can someone please tell me in the mean time, how can I divert his attention away from this habit, and maybe onto something else? My ice maker on my fridge, makes a bucket full of ice and by the end of the day, its gone! Getting a typically developing child to understand the effects is hard enough, but how can i help my autistic son, since these children do not take too kindly to change in routine?

Hi. Im so glad that I'm not the only person in the world that eats ice like a maniac. Though I think that I have caved in to the problem. I don't really want to stop eating ice because i love it! Getting i nice tall glass of ice that's super cloudy, with any size is fine by me. I am indeed and addict to ice eat ing but i don't want to stop. I just wonder if i will die from eating it? I don't think so? but who knows? As long as there isn't a serious problem with eating it i will continue to embrace this addiction. At least when i'm stressed i don't reach for alcohol, or a box of cigarettes, or do drugs, or even eat food to get my mind together i eat ice and yes i'm freezing but thats what the heat is there for! :) :D
