omg i thought i was the only one!! ive been an ice addict for almost 2 years now and literally i thought i was the only one!!.. my mother even tells me everyday (literally) that my blood is gonna get thin for eating so much ice. when i get up the first thing i do is get a cup of ice(i know its so sad)BEFORE breakfast!. i eat like 8 cups or probably more at times of ice a day.(im eating ice as im writing this!) my friends thought i was just exaggerating when i first told them but when they would spend the day with me they would be like damn u weren't kidding!. its gotten so bad that even when i go to my best friend's house she has a specific tray just for me when i go. i laugh at the situation sometimes but it makes me wonder if it can really cause a health problem. i am slightly anemic but this was before i started the ice chewing sensation.lol.but i was reading some of the people reply and i can agree with them..its the "frost" that i LOVE to chew on..its so weird.. and i kno its gotten worst because my father gets sick a lot and every time he goes to the hospital and im visiting him, i will have like 4 cups of ice before ill leave...its gotten soooo bad.. ive started to think can this be like an OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER?

I too was eating a lot of ice. It started in Oct. 2007 and finally in the later part of 2008 I started feeling really run down and out of breath. Doctor was going to order stress test until I told him that I don't know why but I can't stop eating ice. He immediately said that's an iron deficiency. Sure enough, had blood work done and my blood count had plunged to 5! once I got rid of the anemia, I have not eaten ice like before , 10-20 cups per day (ice cups from the convenient stores and gas stations). Now, out of habit, I eat 1 to 2 cups per day or so.

Hello my fellow ice lovers. I call myself a iceologist. Yes the white ice taste much better and is soft on the teeth. I now buy my ice by the bag from Sonics. It is great. I will however try to start taking the iron that my doctor prescribed. My husband hates my addiction. I tell him that it is better than drugs or alcohol!!!

Hi,
I have been eating ice for about 3 years now too. it's becoming more of a daily need then ever before. I have a high Iron level so I know it's not anemia. anyone have other ideas as to what would cause this need for ice?

I have been addicted to ice for a few months now and have been experiencing problems with passing stools. Does eating excess ice have any relation to bowel movement and digestion at all? I know it sounds weired to think ice would cause constipation because it is essentially water but I am left with out any explanation. Whenever I start eating ice becasue my craving just wins, I start having problems and my stool gets dry and hard. That is because I don't pass stool for days becasue even when I have a bowel movement, as soon I sit on the toilet and try, the movement goes away and my stool just keeps on getting drier and harder. My boyfriend thinks I am crazy for thinking the ice is the cause but I am very convinced.
Any word on this wouuld be greatly appreciated!

:-P hi all, I have been eating ice for 2 yrs now, i make trays of it a day and also buy it in bags, they last a cpl of days at a time, i put them in pint glasses and can have up 2 3-4 in a cpl of hrs, i sneak in from work during the day to have some too, my mouth waters at the thought of having some, yum yum. My fiance said im a weirdo n that it cant b good for me, he hates the sound of crunching so i do it when hes either in another room, with door closed, out or in bed. My teeth do hurt at times but it wont stop me, I love the bigger cubes so i can let it melt them chomp away till its all gone, what i need to know is `can it cause any other side affects with stomach, kidneys ect`?

I have been eating ice for about 3 months. I fill a glass with crushed from the fridge then pour lemonade or fruit juice over (just to cover). I probably eat 4 or 5 glasses a day. I'm a smoker and have cut way back because of the ice eating. I don't chew it, I just melt it in my mouth until I can swallow it whole. I recently had blood work and my hemoglobin and iron are great. Does anyone kow of any other reasons to start this obsession? %-)

I too am an ice eater. I started during pregnancy (18 years ago) and have continued off and on. As a teenager I was anaemic, and certainly have had times when my blood count has been low. The blood donors have refused ot let me give blood now, but that is due more to low blood pressure and fainting! It never occurred to me that there may be a medical reason or result of ice eating until yesterday when, out for a meal adn chomping on a lovely pint full of ice, a friend said that she had heard that it was a symptom of something. So I googled 'ice-eating' and here i am. Am now considering going to the doctor - could this be related to my tiredness problems? (PS. My best Christmas present ever was an ice machine - ice on tap, so to speak!)

There a a couple of different reasons one may want to chew on ice. In your case, with your levels being normal could be OCD. Persons who have cravings to eat ice are pica eaters. Look it up. My mother-in-law has this issue, its mostly due to iron insufficiency..Best of luck to you my friend.

Hello fellow "crunchers"!
I often feel so guilty aand an odd ball for my ice eating addiction. Yes, I am anemic but I believe over the past 10 years it has developed into an addiction. Oh, do I love ice!!!!! My employer used to have the crushed ice but replaced it with a machine that dispenses cubes (which is harder in the teeth). I have had to pull two teeth as I have broken (weakened) teeth but I cannot help myself... I love it, I crave it....I have to stop. I heard some where that the ice does not allow your food to digest properly and may cause weight gain....?

I am so scared now after reading all these post. I am more than just addicted to Ice. I eat ice all day long, yes I also wake up thinking about ice. I drive to the convenience store every morning and get two 44 oz cups of ice. One is finished by the time I arrive at my job (30 minute drive). I am finished the other one by 9:30 every day. I take my 10 minute break and go to the hotel down the street and get a courtesy bucket full of ice. This is gone by 12:30 when I eat lunch. I get a 44 oz cup with lunch, let it melt a little and chew it down. I go back to the hotel at 3:00 on my second break and get another courtesy bucket. This will last until I get off work. I stop at the gas station by my job abd get two 44 oz cups of ice for the drive home. Same routine for over 7 YEARS!. If I don't go to work, I still go to the convience store and get 2 cups of ice (at least 3 or 4 times a day when I am off work). Now I am worried that this is OCD and not just an addiction to ice. Also, chewing ice makes me cough. I cough like a smoker, but this does not stop me from chewing the ice. It is a non productive cough, just a hard flat dry cough. And that still doesn't stop me.

Hi. I too can relate to what you feel. The bloating, feeling full when all you've had is ice. I asked my dentist if it was bad for me and she said yes. Reason being is that you can crack your teeth and not know it until later down the road. I read someone elses comment about strange aches and pains. Today I felt a pain in my upper arm that kinda feels like a crook in the neck. I figured I slept on it but the comment made earlier makes me wonder. I also read that someone else noticed that they had become extremely fatigue. ME TOO!!!! Wonder if that's a symptom..........

I am young and i too have an addiction to ice. Ice makes me feel better and I only eat it with some sort of drink. I have to have it crushed or any fast food ice. I know that there is some sort of anemic problem with eating ice, but I was wondering about how badly my teeth would get if I wouldn't be able to stop. How bad is my teeth if I have eaten ice for months?
