Hi, i too am a serious ice cruncher, i buy bags from the supermarket and sit at night munching away. i also have anaemia, i've been given iron tablets from the doctor for it. i didn't know untill i came onto this site that eating ice is a side effect of anaemia, that explains so much. my cocern though is that i am 7 months pregnant and my ice eating seems to be getting worse, does anyone if it is dangerous to me or my unborn baby? my midwife said its fine to eat it but i really don't think the realises the extent of my habbit. i have an appointment with her again in a couple of weeks so i think i should really try and explain it in more detail then.

i am laughing as i write ths bc i just finished eating a cup of tha good hospital ice. even while visitng others, i cant help but ask for a pitcher of ice and only ice. with me, i know its an anemia thing. i rec trying a liquid iron supp, as that has been tha most effective. if u can stomach it, do liver. also molasses and green leafy things will improve ya iron. and be sure to include vitamin c as it helps ya body absorb iron better, either in pill form, citrus fruit, or good ol oj.

currently, i am practicing self destructive behavior by avoiding taking my iron and multivitamin. it is my hope, that i will change and do better. until then, i eat ice until im cold and even then i just turn tha heat up and eat some more.

one war story i will tell in order to scare all u wud be ice addicts, one time i was cruching away and bam i heard a snap and had the worst pain in my mouth one cud ever feel. after making an emergency visit to tha dentist, i found out id damaged a ligament. who knew there were ligaments in ya mouth?! oh, it was bad, no money to pay tha huge bill and all bc i had to have some damn ice. from then on, i swore off ice totally. i wud even order drinks without it bc it was too much to have it so close and not be able to partake. then slowly, i wud start to eat small cubes that had melted down to what i considered a non-harmful size. now, im back to eating ice, but im partial to certain shapes and sizes. as i type this, i want to laugh bc it is soo silly. i hope i can resolve to be done, but until then a wanna send a shout out to all u iceheads out there, atleast u arent hurting anyone, get tha joy you can, and if u really want to push it to tha limit just buy a whole bag of tha brand that really does it for you and munch out! PEACE :-P

I had never heard of eating ice causing anemia until a lady at work said it. So then I became concerned because I love to eat ice. We go to Sonic and I usually get a cup of their ice to eat. I am anemic and have been for quite some time I think. They always tell me that when I give blood. Anyway, i do take iron supplements and vitamins. I just love to eat ice. I am glad I am not the only one. Perhaps though I should stop or slow down?

Eating ice is a sign of a anemia, not a cause. basically your body is craving oxygen (because their is a shortage of it due to the decrease of blood cells) ice is frozen h20 so there is a release of oxygen into the body when you eat it. There is nothing wrong with eating ice besides it being damaging to your teeth. It does not cause you to be anemic or stop the reproduction of red blood cells. I am severly anemic, I have been in the hospital getting a blood transfusion and eating ice at the same time, my health professionals did not say anything about it and in fact kept providing me with it because they knew that anemics crave ice.

I've noticed that for the past three years I crunch ice constantly, morning noon and night.
It's so bad that when I go out I do the same thing in public always have to remove the ice from my drinks and crunch it :(
I'm afraid it may be the lack of something in my diet?
I compare it to the same as drinking water but my friends thing other wise.
It's not just any ice it has to be the "frosted" type not the clear 'glassy" type of ice....hope I'm making sense here.
What may be the problem?

My whole life I have enjoyed eating ice. And i am now 19 years of age. I agree on all the comments that you have made. I never knew that eating ice could affect your health. Until I became anemic. My doctor didnt tell me that eating ice could be the cause.

That is so weird that there are actually people out that feel the same way I feel about eating ice. Just like she I could eat frosty looking ice not clear ice. Now that Ihave been eating ice for almost 3 years now I have just transitioned to shaved ice even in the winter I am trying to find snow ball stands to get shaved ice from I love so much and when I dint have ice I am so emotional I know hat sounds crazy but I am.

Well I am not alone I see out here , I am a certified ICE EATER I even have a special kind that I like , It has been keeping me stress free for years and I swear it is the best think since sliced bread, I have tried to quit on several occasions but with no luck , I am 42 with a great health record and with out any dental problems what so ever , I have been told that it can cause gas problems when you get older because they say that it allows more gas to get into our stomachs, but I am a size 6 with 3 kids and you can not even tell soooo !! I don't think that is true so far , but I am open to any medical advice or opinion that is available to help me better understand why I love doing something so much that is said to be soooo bad , so to all my ICE EATING FAMILY lets try to figure this thing out and try to make some since out of it if we can , I know one thing it has saved me from a lot of trying situations LOL !! until then I guess I will keep on crunching and stay stress free!!!! Holla !!!!

I have been struggling with this ice fetish since I was a pre-teen, I have been eating ice for almost twenty years now. I have suffered from many of the same symptoms as some of you. The bloating is terrible, it makes me look five months pregnant. I am anemic and my hemoglobin has dropped so low that I could not breathe, would get nauseous, and would pass out. In the past year and a half I have received a total of 6 units of blood. I am desperately seeking some type of resolution for this craving. I have read that eating ice is an eating disorder that may require psychological treatment. My husband is fed up, my kids think I'm nuts, I just can't stop eating that damn ice. My favorite ice is the kind from the hospital, the little frosty ice chips. When I can't get that I buy ice, but only "Reddy Ice" because it has lots of frost. I have notice that I don't drink ANY liquids anymore all I do is eat ice with meals without meals, whenever. I'm up to a 10 pound bag of ice a day. I have to find away to stop...

What you are experiencing is actually pagophagia, which is a type of PICA. Pica of course is when (we) constantly crave something- i.e ice (kids eat dirt, sheetrock etc). I had gastric bypass surgery ten years ago and developed severe anemia. I have had 3 teeth removed, 4 crowns and lots of filling because i cannot stop eating ice. The iron pills do cause constipation and/or green stools and with my surgery, my body wasnt absorbing the iron anyway. I also get weekly B-12 shots. However, the only "cure" that worked, albeittemporarily, was a total blood transfusion. I get one about every 12-15 months and my ice cravings almost immediately go away. Blood transfusions are expensive and not fun, but if you cannot tolerate taking iron supplements (p.s iron sulfate is harsh, try iron fosfate) then a blood transfusion may be your only chance.

Well i am i am only 10 years old and i love to ice and know exactly what you are talking about. I am 20 years old and have had the problem/habit for years now it's been approximately 6 years now & btw the addiction is call (Pagophabia) also known as (Pica) for ice. Ever since my husband noticed the habit he already knew what i had & don't be afraid it's normal. I am now expecting & even though i had the habit before i got pregnant i am taking iron & multivitamins. My advice is definitely to relax :-)
