I got my heartbeat checked, and its at 81bpm, im 17.. But this seems fairly high.. Should I get this checked out? I say this because about 2 weeks ago my heart was beating at about twice normal.. If not more, it took me 3 hours to calm my heart down, and then when I checked my heart beat a week later its at 81bpm.. Which is giving me a lot of concern, and somewhat sleepless nights

hi, the average resting heart rate is approx 60 - 80bpm, as a rule the rate you stated would be acceptable, as for the episodes of fast heartbeat - also known as palpitations, it depends how fast it was going, for how long and what caused it. simple factors such as stress, caffiene and illness can bring on these episodes, otherwise there may be a medical explanation, but this would have to be diagnosed by a doctor, usually through a tracing of your heart ( electrocardiogram ). i would advise that you forget about what has happened for the moment, however if it happens again then check how fast it is going and if at all concerned, suffering chestpain of shortness of breath, then speak to a doctor and get checked out, in the menatime try to eat carefully and avoid any foods that you think may be exacerbating the problem. hope this helps.

you're welcome no problem, but due to the fact it was cocaine that caused the problem i would definitely recommend staying well away from it in the future plus any other illicit substances, apart from the obvious problems and side effects that are well documented and advertised, it is obvious that this drug in particular didn't agree with your body. the fact you noticed the palpitations on this occasion should be viewed as a warning sign, next time the effects may be too much for your body to handle. hope this helps to make the risks a little clearer for you - kate

resting heart rate is 60-100bpm not 60-100bpm.
your heart beat was only 81bpm while you were doing cocaine?
what is your normal resting heart rate.
actully 81bpm is great expecially if you were on cocaine at this time.
so i assume your resting heart rate is a lot lower.

Here's a tip, if you do cocaine find better things to do then go to a doctors appointment. :-[] Most likely you had anxiety because you have heard so many bad things (and rightly so in this case) But 81 is normal when you are stimulated with Mt Dew or Cocaine. Never do drugs that are known to kill, there's plenty of safer choices out there.

To the guest that has been replying to this topic I would just like to ask if they have any medical training on which to base their advice on the cause of palpitations and also point out .....
a) Iced originally stated they were concerned about the episodes of fast heart rate 2 weeks before - not that their heart rate was 81bpm. this was given as a guide for their normal resting rate
b)As i stated in my second post there are many different causes for palpitations including anxiety, stimulants and also medical causes. I advised that Iced try to forget about the previous incident in case the problem was anxiety related and avoid stimulants to see if the problem recurred, and if so they should see their doctor for a checkup and to ensure there was no underlying cause.
It is reckless to advise that someone find something better to do than see a doctor if feeling unwell, even if under the influence of drugs it is possible for someone to have a genuine problem. Also due to the type of drug and its effects on the body it is widely understood that arrhythmias and other cardiac related problems can arise with use of this drug as i have personally witnessed - as stated before this could have been a warning sign and Iced should bear this in mind.
