22 yr old female-I got my tonsils out on the 10th of September. I thought everything was going pretty smoothly until Monday when I couldn't stop spitting up blood! I had half a cup. I went into the hospital where they performed emergency surgery to re-cauterize my throat. Now it has been bleeding on and off today and yesterday and I am a mess. I am so nervous I will have to go back in for emergency surgery. AND the process is starting over again so I have a full 2 weeks left of not being able to do much. This stinks. :'(

Hey ya'll...I'm 21 and had both sets taken out on the 20th. I was actually supose to have them taken out on the 27th of August but reading all of these postings just freaked me out.
So I went through with it anyhow (Mostly because my boyfriend shipped out and I didnt want him to see me like this). Going in on Thursday was pretty nerve racking. I had to strip down to my skivies and put on their little dressy deal, sat in the room for about 40min before they took me in to have it done.
Im going to have to say that the worst part of this entire thing was waking up after surgery. I didn't know how to breath right, my throat was sore, the room was spinning, the nurse kept telling me to wake up and when I didn't she just sat there and sighed at me til I poked open one eye. Shortly after they asked me when my pain was on a scale of 1-10 and I told em a 5 then got some pain meds they wheeled me to a room to sleep in bed while my dad watched over me.
I came home pretty much 30min after they wheeled me to the room. I was super dizzy and just layed in bed for two days after that. Yesterday I finally got up and walked around downstairs. But the night I got home I got sick. Probably from the liquid vicodin they gave me that I took on an empty stomach with warm jello that did the trick. Then again yesterday when I was bleeding a wee bit into my stomach. But today the pain has been pretty good. On my fourth day, the pain isnt too bad. I've been sleeping with ice packs on my throat which really helps me swallow.
Other than water I haven't been eating much else. Applesauce, Jello, Vanilla ice cream. Just keep on top of ur WATER.

Im a 21 yo female. Over this past year ive been getting chronic flare ups and all the doctors did for me were prescribe some steriods. Once I got fed up with being given the same treatment they finally sent me to an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor who told me that my tonsils were obviously being overworked. Since they were the size of golf balls and looked like mini brains (was quite funny).
I had the appointment all set up for the 27th of August but pushed it back because of what I kept reading in here. Thanks a lot guys. HAHA. Safe to say I reset my appointment and went through with it. Here I am on day 3/4 and I can safely say that as long as I drink water, cold water and only eat cold things my throat is fine. Of course the liquid vicodin doesn't NOT help. But I found that leaving a cold pack of ice or whatever from my freezer on my throat for 20min does help the pain subside and cut back my use for pain meds.
The only bad part of surgery was the AFTER. I had a snotty nurse that didnt like not having me listen to her telling me to constantly wake up then show her with my hands on a scale of 1-10 what my pain was. Other than that im fine.
The pain is pain, it is to be expected. But it isn't anywhere as bad as I thought it was going to be. Just make sure you drink plenty of water, like I said. That really helps keep your throat moist.
Only thing im not looking forward to now is the scabs coming off. ICK! I'll let ya'll know how that goes when it goes down.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ELSE! :-D

I would just like to say how important it is to carry on a full diet. All the doctors, consultants and nurses have stressed this importance because it helps the body to heal. Without food how do you expect to heal?? Plus as the girl above said it actually prevents the bleeding complications and does not cause them! Also the nurse said lots of fizzy drinks. Lots of fruit and veg etc..
I have carried on a normal diet and it is now day 6 and the pain i am experiencing is starting to seriously carm down..
Also if you do not eat a normal diet your stomach will become shredded from all the meds and antibiotics. I cannot stress enough EAT EAT EAT!!!!

Hi- Iam on day 8. I was instructed by my doctor and the nurses in recovery in a large metro American Hospital that talking will not make any further damage and eating soft foods for one week and then slightly harder foods after is fine- BUT- for at least 2 weeks no Hard foods- like doritos and chips as they can scratch and cause bleeding.
As for me- I was great last week. Minimal pain , I really thought I was in for it as the doctor said don't hate me next week- but I breezed through last week. Now this week another story. Today is the worst day yet- but I just came off my steroid pack so maybe that is why. He said Saturday would be the worst. I had my lingual tonsils out and my tongue is feeling odd. Only my right side of the palatine was done ( it was a revision) and that side sucks- but I have my left pain free. My adenoids were done too. The other day I had an odd clotty thing come out- maybe an adneoid scab. But- my area on the right where it is white- well there are smaller holes in the white hole- is that normal???

I am 41 years old and now five days post op. This has been the worst nightmare of my life. It did not help that any meds would not stay down. I was vomiting, up until yesterday all the liquids I would take in. I look like death and feel even worse. Every time I try to drink it washes up my nose and out and the pain is beyond anything I could imagine. I have had five kids, so I thought I was very tough...NOT!!! So much for the fairy tales of Popsicles and ice cream...NOT!! I am so weak and tired. I did not throw up at all today, which I am certain this has contributed to my slower recovery. Throwing up was like ripping out my throat all over again. I have lost about 10 pounds which is no way to lose weight. I wish this were easier. I am now slowly able to suck on ice chips. It's very hard to even open my mouth. Ugh!!
quote="36 year old female"]Reading through these post it becomes quite obvious that the old adage is true that this surgery is harder on you the older you get. With few exceptions it is the 25 and under crowd that breeze right through this surgery.
I have had two children and horrid labor and would do it ten times over than go through the last 5-6 weeks.
Who knows if the super hydration method would have lessened the pain but even water was excrutiating to get down. I could only do ice chips for nearly 3 weeks! I was on pain meds into week 5! I am going into week 6 and while the pain is mostly gone I have lost some sense of taste . As odd as it sounds I am also dealing with learning to speak a little differently. The best way of describing it is like I am attempting to speak with a spoonful of peanut butter stuck to the roof of my mouth. When I drink liquids, it tends to ride up into the nasal passages. I wish I had been aware of these after effects prior to the surgery. I may have deceided against it.

ahhh I'm terrified reading these stories o.O . I'm 26/ f and am going to have a tonsillectomy with possible adenoidectomy on nov 1st in a Fort Worth, Tx hospital. I'll keep y'all updated. Did most of you have it done as a day surgery or how long did you stay in hospital for? did you get sedation before the anesthesia?
Thanks and good luck to anyone else,
Kat

So the first few days were the pits... i slept through everything. i dont remeber doing much of anything. No that im on day 5 i feel like i have a false hope. I keep hearing how when the scabs fall off i will get this enourmous amount of pain...
other than that i just want to know when most people start to talk like normall again. right now i can only word out some phrases without keeling over in pain. :::sighs::: :-( hopefully this will start getting better soon, like in the next few days. (trying to be optomistic)

My husband is 53 years old and just had tonsillectomy, and septoplasty, and trimmed the pallate on 10/31. He keeps coughing when he drinks anything (even taking sips of water). He said it feels like he's choking because it takes a second for the water to go all the way down. Lots of mucous coming up (probably anesthesia related, maybe) Complains of dry mouth. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

I had surgery back in February of 2007 and actually wound up in the hospital again back in May from experiencing an abcess infection due to the removal of my tonsils. It is now November, and am still experiencing throat soreness which I feel relies solely on the surgery. Any advice or opinions on what the case of this may be?

Hello my surgery sister! I had my tonsillectomy on Nov. 1st also. I would like to hear how you are recovering. It is now 10 days post-surgery and I am still having a lot of pain. I am able to eat jello, chicken soup, and pudding. But I have to take pain meds every 2 hours or I am in agony. I read someone's post from earlier about sipping on ice water and that helps as well. I am wondering how many more days until I start feeling better???
Each day it seems it has gotten more and more painful. Also, this has easily been the most painful experience of my life. Mostly because the pain is a constant sharp one. I had HELLP Syndrome when my daughter was born and my liver was dying, then I had a C-section to recover from and even all of that wasn't half as painful as a stupid tonsillectomy!!! (shakes fist)
I called the nurse from my ENT clinic earlier this week and told her that the liquid Oxycodone they prescribed isn't even making my throat feel better. And she said that it is not supposed to, it's just supposed to "take the edge off". WHAAAAT??! The only thing that has really tremendously helped soothe my throat is this gargle stuff called "Isolep". It's a mouthwash kind of thing that has lidocaine in it and it numbs my throat after I gargle with it. I hope everyone is doing well. To people who are second guessing getting a tonsillectomy due to the pain; I know it is scary to read all these posts but you have to put into perspective that the pain won't last forever. But I won't sugar coat it, it hurts like a @#$%^! Good luck everyone. Write back with some helpful advice.

I am very sorry to hear that he is having a bad time, I am also going through some issues with my recovery as well. I am not an expert or anything but I was a medic in the USAF for a while and I can say that it is so very important to stay hydrated. Can your husband contact his healthcare provider and request an NG tube? An NG tube is painless, it's a soft flexible tube that is inserted through the nose and is passed down into the stomach. This way he would not have to swallow anything, you would just need to use a syringe to add water or liquids for nutrition such as "Ensure". The tube doesn't hurt once it's in, and it can stay in for his recovery period. Or if things get really bad, you could ask to be admitted to the hospital where they can maintain his fluids by inserting an I.V. I hope this helps you.

Jessica

I too almost canceled mine due to all these horror stories. After my surgery - I sucked down some orange slush and water - I came home and made oatmeal at that took some medicine and went to sleep. Woke up a few hours later and made a huge thing of frozen mashed potatoes from Bob evans - these were great, just had to be warm and mushy to eat. I made some jello and ate a bunch of popsicles.
Last night I did get some shooting pains in my throat but kept forcing myself to drink water and eat chicken noodle soup and I felt much better. Late last night I couldn't talk either.
Its just hard to laugh(no more watching comedies for me) and I had to cough and that hurt pretty bad.
But seriously, I woke up today and felt much better - I had more soup, water, and popsicles and I can talk a little more. We'll see if I get the crazy pains tomorrow.

I am on day 10 of post op. I'm 24 and have had tonsil problems my entire life. My tonsils were enlarged and "cryptic" meaning they had places on them that were easily susceptible to bacteria. I had my surger on November 5. The first day was actually alright, I slept most of the day and was able to drink water and tea at room temperature. Days 2 and 3 were a little bit worse. Most of the time I was able to get applesauce and other brothy soups down. My was at home with my parents they had to crumble my medicines into whatever I was eating. I was on hydrocodone, tramadol and ibuprofen.
Days 4-8 were MISERABLE. Mornings were the worst. I did end up spitting up a very small amount of blood on the 5th or 6th day. It was in the morning and I was a little scared. I drank a glass of water and then was very gentle when swallowing. I didn't bleed to death or pass out so I'm assuming that it wasn't a free flow of blood. My doctor said anything more than about 2 tsp. is alright, but if it's more you should call the doctor.
Every morning through Day 9 or so, I would wake up with the dry throat. If I tried to drink anything when I first woke up I felt like my throat was splitting and burning. Heat helped on my ear and jaw pain. If you're having ear pain and don't have one of those heatable bags that are filled with corn or beans, try wrapping a damp cloth in plastic wrap microwaving it for about 2 minutes, then wrap that in another dry cloth (I used a dishtowel) hold that just below your ears on your throat, until the heat goes out of the cloth, then you can microwave it again if you need to. I found that it eased the pain in the mornings.
Day 10 is alright. I actually slept through the entire night. I woke up with a dry throat and was in a small amount of pain. that dissipated through the morning. I still have a place in my throat that is pretty sore and causing the ear pain. The days are getting better, my voice still sounds as though I am a deaf person...
All in all I will say that reading old posts from the original thread helped to realize that I am not crazy and that the pain is very real. If you are planning to have this surgery or you have already had the procedure I wish you good luck and hope you have a speedy recovery. I feel like I am slowly getting better so there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
