Also, take your medication as perscribed. The pain medication is very icky tasting so i suggest to have a bottle of water handy to help it go down. The first couple of days, you wont want to drink anything because it hurts. BUT DRINK AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. you're throat is going to heal and the reason they say to keep you're throat very moist is because as it heals, it scabs. You don't want to have an occurence of a thick scab. So you need to keep the scab as thin as possible. So when the scab is ready to fall off, it does so with little or no bleeding. I say remain doing all the above things for about a week.

After a week, your solid to eat normal everyday foods. You can no longer hurt nothing back there if you do. You will find that every night it gets a little better for you and you can get more and more sleep.

The older you are getting them out, the more it will hurt. But the pain for me isn't that bad at all. Resume normal activity within a week after surgery to refrain from damaging your throat. [/quote

Thanks for explaining why we should drink so much, so the scab won't be so thick and cause bleeding when it falls off. Best reason I have read!!!

im 23 and just had my tonsils out 5 days ago because i had very severe sleep apniea, i had never had surgurey before and had never been so scared in my life, although i am still in discomfort and pain now i dont regret the surgurey, it was not as bad as i thought it would be and i did not have any complications thankfully. Maybe i am one of the lucky ones who knows lol, the only thing that bothers me is my ears and the look of my throat, if i can give any advice to you it would be to not look at your throat after u get home, i did this 2 days after i got home and freaked out, scary and gross doesnt sum it up but i came to find out it is all so normal, the look the taste and the feeling, i cant wait untill its been a week maybe it wont be as gross, and be sure to drink lots of liquids, i did not do this because of my discomfort but the truth is the more u eat and drink and get back to everyday routine the faster it will heal, if you think and worry about it like i have it will drive you crazy, brush your teeth 3-4 times a day, no mouthwash. and ice chips really help, it has been hell so far but i do tend to over react so take it day by day and remember...." this to shall pass"

I am 29 years old and i had my tonsils taken out on Feb 14th 2011, best val present ever XD. I am 2 weeks post-op tomorrow and I had ribs on saturday and fried rice today. I guess I was one of the lucky ones, don't get me wrong i went through the pain and it was like nothing i have been through before. I will not kid you it hurts a lot but drinking lots of water HELPS VERY MUCH. I was told to drink drink drink, it hurts to in the first week but I noticed that right before you drink if you take a couple of ice-chips it helps to soothe and cool your throat then it doesn't hurt as much to drink. The pain medicine was horrible tasting but it did the job and soda taste awful. I know it says to stay away from spicy food but am African and I love my spicy food it hurts to eat it but i noticed that it seemed to help with the healing it could be my imagination I like to believe that it is the burn of the spice that helped the healing. Also taking the anti-nausea medication first thing after you wake up before eating went a long way to help you keep your meal down.

I'm a 14 year old female. I was told that the younger you were the easier it was..well that was until my doctor told me post op that I wasn't one of his younger patients. I am 6 days post op including surgery day. Day of surgery was fantastic. I felt very little pain, but the days after have been a horror show. I slept after I came home from the hospital. I wasn't kept overnight. Well when I got home it was to the bed I went. Sleeping was something I was in a constant of doing because I was still groggy from the anesthetics. Well about 11 that night I woke up crying my eyes out. I was in so much pain and it would not let up. My dad took me to get his mom's opinion. His mom told me and him to stay there that night..so we did. The next day around ten I had been taking my loratabs and was still in a significant amount of pain. My doctor said go to the emergency room. Well my 3rd and 4th day was minimal pain due to I was in the hospital being given pain medicine, steroids, antibiotics, fluids, and whatnot through my IV until I was released. 5th day was okay. Today..my 6th day. I haven't got out of bed. It's been rough. I woke up at 7:00 and prayed to go back to sleep...nothing has helped me today. I'm nauseated, in a lot of head ear and throat pain. All I can say is this is gonna be one long bumpy ride but if it helps my condition..I will be forever glad I got this surgery.

I'm 66 years old and was diagnosed with a tumour on my tonsils and a swollen lymph node so had to have all removed. The first couple of days wasn't too bad as I was still pretty dozy. I coped quite well until about the 5th day when the soreness became worse and I thought I'd never get better. By the 9th day I was feeling better and once you reach that stage you can say the worst is over. It's not a pleasant experience but the pain is bearable and, as long as you make sure you take your medication and listen to the advice the doctors give you it won't last forever, so don't worry too much. Be a brave girl and distract yourself from the discomfort as much as you can by watching your favourite films or reading a good book, you'd be surprised how it takes your mind off the discomfort. The most important thing is to drink plenty of water, and occasionally treat yourself to a nice ice lolly. All the very best and hope I've helped a little.
