I have had the same problem for years for pretty much as long as I can remember and doctors kept saying 'oh it's ring worm'. After a while I came to realise that it would be really prominent (and almost painful) in Summer and after wearing board shorts for long periods of time and I ruled it down to the polyester in the board shorts. After I cut back on my board short usage it seemed to go down a bit. A couple years ago I went to a doctor who was an absolute genius! He put my fingernails under a magnifying glass and found these little microscopic holes in them that he used to diagnose seborrheic dermatitis! All I needed was to apply elocon once a day for a little while and it went away. It comes back sometimes but I always have tube of elocon handy to fight it back into submission :) Definitely ask a doctor about it next time you get your son checked out if this hasn't been remedied yet. Sorry about the late reply and hope this helps :)
