My 10 year old niece has a snorting problem. It turns out she has very enlarge adenoids; the size of almonds. They gave her steroids and spray to see if that helps. She is still snorting. We don't think it's Tourette syndrome.
Is having adenoids removed a complicated risky operation? Will it take away that short?

Adenoids can cause this problem, has she been evaluated by an ENT who recommends this surgery?
Any surgery, especially an invasive surgery, carries risks. In most cases your niece would be sedated using general anesthesia. The procedure itself is fairly straightforward.
I'm not sure about your reference to Tourette's, especially since there is an obvious obstruction of the airway. Tourette's is a genetic disorder and more common in males.

Hi there,
The fact is that many children have problems with their adenoids. You have to understand that this is not a rare thing and unfortunately many have to undergo the surgery to remove the adenoids. The surgery is not too complicated but it is not simple as well. The hardest thing if you ask me is a recovery from the surgery. It can sometimes last up t four weeks. You should first talk to her doctor about all the details concerning the surgery. Do this only if it is necessary, but first try with the steroids and the spray. I hope that this gave you some clue about the surgery for adenoids.
Best wishes,
Marco
