I recently discovered that my daughter, 17, and son, 15, who have their own rooms, sleep in the nude and don't wear underwear during the day. This bothers me, but for every reason I give them why, they come back with a persuasive argument.

To my claims that it's unhealthy, they retort, "Prove it," saying they can't imagine that tight-fitting underwear could be good for you, and that sleeping in the buff is more comfortable and therefore they sleep better, which has to be healthier.

To indecency, they rebut, "How could it be if no one sees or knows about it." They have a point, since I discovered their habits when I noticed that I was no longer washing underwear or bed clothes, not because I saw them naked.

Immoral? Their answer is that premarital sex, drugs, smoking or getting drunk are worse than being naked in private. They add that they are using less water by washing fewer clothes. I admit that is a plus.

So, is there a valid reason they shouldn't be doing these things, or should I let it be?

Of course you should let them. How would sleeping nude or going commando during the day underneath clothes be immoral? I don’t understand the issue. It’s not a question of modesty because nobody else can see it, so why does it make you uncomfortable? Both of these behaviors are probably more common than you think. I bet you know a lot of people who sleep nude without even realizing it - it’s just not something that’s typically talked about.

Unless they are walking around your house fully naked and you are then forced to see your sons penis flopping about or your daughter's breast and bush. I do not see the harm in them sleeping naked. Just be glad they are open enough with you about it most parents think even discussing nudity with their kids is something never to be done.

Dear befuddled mom
I am a single mother of 13 year old son and he sleeps fully nude and has completely stopped wearing underwear. Initially I had some of the same concerns as you have but after talking to him about it and trying to see it from his perspective, I have accepted it. The thing is that after he started puberty his penis has grown extremely large - it almost hangs down to his knees now. This makes wearing underwear very uncomfortable for him and it's more or less impossible to find any that fits, so he just wears sweats or loose big shorts with nothing underneath. He has to be a little careful not to expose himself when he sits down in shorts and the outline and movement of his huge penis can be quite visible when he wears sweats but he just can't stand wearing underwear! As I mentioned he also always sleeps completely nude, that's the only way he can feel comfortable in bed - it's such a relief for him not having to wear any constricting clothes and just being able to let his penis hang free. He was recently at a sleepover at a friends house and really dreaded having to wear sleepwear so I talked to his friend's mom in advance and told her that he was a very commited nude sleeper and asked her if it would be allright if he slept totally naked because that's the only way he can get a good night's sleep. Luckily her son is also a nude sleeper at home so he was very happy that he didn't have to wear anything to bed either. Actually his mom asked me afterwards if it was true that my son never wears underwear because now her son wants to go commando as well :-). I know my son was a little embarrassed when his schoolmates saw him changing for PE without underwear for the first time but now he is quite at ease with it. I have come to realize that he isn't hurting anybody and he is still a very sweet and caring boy and he is just so much more comfortable and happy and actually doing better in school after he started sleeping completely nude and totally stopped wearing any kind of underwear.
