Over a year ago I was helping a friend move. While helping, I got what I thought was a splinter in my thigh. A year later and it is still there! It doesn't hurt or anything, but I'm just tired of it being there and wondering why it is still there. I mean, shouldn't a splinter have disolved by now? It feels like it is the same size as when it went into my leg.
I can get it to a point where it is just a little below the skin. I can see exactly where the tip of it is pushing against the skin. Should I cut a small opening and try to push it out?
Should I do it now or wait until after my marathon that is a month away? Then again, there is also the whole issue of will I be able to actually go through with it on my own or do I need a doc to numb it up first?
What would you do? Would you leave it? Would you cut it out yourself? Would you have a doc do it?

At this point I think I think I would let a doctor do it because it is already healed and you would be opening a new wound. At the time when it happened I would have just gone after it myself then if it healed OK it's all set. If it became infected then it would need attention.

I'd do it myself but then I would wish that I'd let the doc do it.
Let the doc do it.
And don't do it before the marathon. You've gone this long. You risk infection either way I suppose, but I still say wait, unless it begins to look like it's getting infected, in which case you'd get to the doc right away. A year? I think it can wait another month.
If your leg falls off in the meantime though, just so you know, I'm not a doctor, I just play one at home.
:toobad:
Oh, and I broke a pencil lead into my outter thigh (sitting on a pencil) when Libby was a little thing. Never did remove it. It's probably riding the cellulite wave in my body. And I'm ko. I mean ok. ;)

If my leg falls off, I may just chase you down and hit you with it. TH isn't that far from me (about 2-3 hrs). :)
It probably makes sense to wait considering it has been in there for over a year already. But my schedule won't get any easier until February.
Marathon in October (Columbus)
103 floor stair climb in November (Sears Tower)
Marathon in December (Bloomington)
50k in December (HUFF)
Marathon in January (Vegas Baby!)
Maybe I could wait until February and take a little time off then. Like I said as well. It doesn't hurt. Just knowing that it is in there and not knowing exactly what it is made of is what's making me want to do it.

How big of a splinter?
Less than an 1", pull out that Swiss-army and be done with it. 8)
