Hi all. I’m 31 and I’m getting married in few weeks. Anyway, the guy I’m marrying has a 7-year-old daughter from his first marriage. Now, I’ve known her ever since she was born and as I will become her step-mom, I’m wondering if it is okay for her to call me Mom? What do you think???

Well, I think that there is no absolute right or wrong answer on that question. I also do not know what relationship that girl has with her biological mother... Anyway, I strongly suggest you come up with an affectionate term that’s different from mom but has “similar meaning”. I think you know what I mean... Of course, if that girl already doesn’t know how to call you... I mean, if she’s been calling you by some “name” so far (weather that was mom or something else) I thing that you should not try to change that... It would be the best thing if she alone could decide hoe to call you, if possible...

I believe you should not have her call you mom. My neighbor's stepmom we all call Sue, from her firstname. So does my neighbor. It would just be uncomfortable in many peoples oppinions. Have her call you by your first name for a while.
