I had the same issue for many years and after consulting with dozens of chiropractors, doctors, and neurologists, I just recently figured out the cause - pressure on my cervical spine. Find a soft-tissue specialist and get examined, but do not use chiropractors for this situation because they tend to make this type of problem worse. If you have the same issue, the soft-tissue specialist can teach you a series of gentle movements that will eventually correct problem vertibrae and make the soft tissue surrounding your spine more flexible. The problem is usually due in part to the ligament surrounding your spine becoming inflammed which causes it to swell and put pressure on your spine. Here's a diagram. My soft-tissue specialists have been able to cure 70+% of their patients with no surgery and they may be able to refer you to a qualified doctor in your area

I've been having the same exact symptoms and it has been scaring me so much! Two days ago I tried the legal drug "spice" which was a huge mistake. The drug is a chemical imitation of cannabis. Right away I felt the burning headache in one spot on the back right side of my head, and it didnt go away. I am one of the small percentage of people who when they try "spice" have a disphoric trip. After the bad trip was over, the headache continued for hours and I ended up going to the ER because I was convinced that I had brain swelling, since I have never had a sensation like this in my head. I had a cat-scan and the doctors said I was fine. The next day I had a glass of wine and the headache came back, as well as some disorientation, anxiety, and dizziness. The area that is sensitive is also tender to the touch if I put pressure on it. I have found one or two descriptions of things online that our problem could be- the first, cluster headaches are described as burning and steady in back of head. also occipital neuritis, which sounds pretty serious.. :-/. The thing is, there are so many possibilities, even with people with the same symptoms. So we should all take responsibility and instead of self-diagnosing, go to a doctor. I am saying this to myself because, after going to the ER I dont want to go to the doctor again, but since the pain is still here two whole days later, I will probably go again tomorrow.
I am wondering, were any of you all's symptoms related to a drug stimulus of some sort? Just throwing it out there, since I didnt see it mentioned in anyone's post.

I have this too... a mild tingling in one spot of my head, like pins and needles, and a lump is appearing too. Im 12, so i think its my skull growing...
I believe its either 'deep thought' like said before... or maybe it IS mass evolution due to the world changing. Mother nature works in strange strange ways.

Hello all, I just wanted to offer some possible helpful guidance - I had the same strong tingling and cold sensation at the top of my head and was able to confirm that it was related to a sudden drop in blood pressure. In my case, I had a pre-existing low BP combined with a medication that lowered it further. The sensation happened most often when going from a sitting or laying position to standing (orthostatic hypotension).
If you are experiencing this kind of tingling and/or cold feeling and are able to test your blood pressure around the same time that it occurs, or even just test it at a normal time, it's probably a good idea (it can't hurt to check). Mild changes in blood pressure, especially when changing "altitudes", are usually nothing to be too worried about, as long as you are careful not to lose your balance and fall. Moderate drops in BP can be accompanied with visual black spots and a strong dizzy sensation and may warrant further investigation.
The suggestions that others have made regarding pinched nerves, anxiety, and so on are possible as well, there is never one answer for everybody, but hopefully the BP suggestion might help one or two people.

"Only happens for me when begin thinking of something in deep thought."
"It is the awakening that is occurring. Its a higher density energy in the galaxy that our solar system is currently going through. ITs causing all the planets in our solar system to change (either by surface brightening, heating, or higher electromagnetic sphere.)
This is also causing our bodies to undergo a mass evolution. We are experiencing a great awakening in consciousness the likes of which the world has never seen. It will culimate in 2012. Lets begin trusting in each other and seeing that all people are one and the same."
Hello,
I cut and pasted the two answers above because I believe they are correct. There is a movie called The Last Mimzy. Please watch it. I say to watch it because in the beginning the teacher in the field of wildflowers is talking to the children telepathically. Eventually the most evolved humans will learn this skill. Whenever I write about this concept, or think deep thoughts as mentioned above I also get this tingling sensation in the back of my head. It is almost as if I can ask questions and the tingling is an affirmative response that yes, what you typed is correct.
Other messages I have received are "HOPE FOR HUMANITY" and someone is truly "watching us from a distance" as the song speaks of.
I did a lot of journalling last year. Some of it was very intersting. I deleted it because it was somewhat prophetic and it scared me. The words were not my own. I suppose New Agers call this channeling.
I am not trained to do this but sometimes when I ask, the tingling sensation affirms that I have a talent in this area. I know it sounds very crazy to say all of this. I hope my reply helps some of you. It is kind of creepy to put it mildly to think that someone is listening to our thoughts. But isn't that what prayer is. Just be careful, once you tap into the kind of communication I have, not all of it is reliable. There can be confusing messages that if taken too seriously can lead to madness.

This article is worth checking out if you are having this problem. It could be related to sitting in front of a computer too long. If you have to sit for long periods of time, it might be worth while to consult a doctor about how you can help this, or take frequent but short breaks from your computer.

i am not a doctor or know much about the medical world. however, i do have a a few possible hypotheses for possible causation for this tingling:
1. everybody describing this symptom seems to be highly involved with technology (tv, computer, videogames). It is known that these activities digitally rewire the brain. This tingling sensation my be a side effect of this.
2. some of you mentioned something about smoking, have any of you ever tried "Spice" or used the chemical JWH-018?

I too have been feeling this tingling sensation, however, I am a little different in this case because of a couple of things. I was in a car accident 4 months ago that changed my life forever. I used to smoke marijuana at least 3x a week and had to stop because I developed panic attacks but never again felt any pain from the accident or any tingling in my neck. As I progressed into the more recent months my stomach developed complications and I soon started feeling very gassy and my stomach was upsetting the rest of my body, THATS exactly when I started feeling this head sensation. Whenever I feel like my stomach is upset it feels like a gassy/bloating/acid reflux sort of upset feeling then it makes my head feel like it is pressurizing and I begin to feel this pulling tingling sensation on the back of my head where the bottom of my skull meets my neck. I do not understand the relation between my stomach and this head feeling but I would like to know if anyone else has been feeling this problem too.

In all likelihood here's the cause. Paresthesia typically involves a drug side effect, nerve compression, or blood flow obstruction of the major artery supplying that watershed area. I'm noticing a large percentage of self identified computer related professionals on this site. Odds are we have an occupational related symptom here. Below I've laid out an educated guess, so by no means is it a definitive diagnosis but it is perhaps of more value than running a bunch of tests and getting back a more noncommittal idiopathic answer from a physician.
The nerve compression would be either on the greater occipital nerve or third occipital nerve. Those experiencing a more medial sensation would most likely be experiencing a third occipital nerve compression. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d8/Gray800.png.
The blood supply to that region is principally provided by the occipital artery.
Recommended treatment: Aspirin & suboccipital inhibition ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed
I would actually also recommend other forms of treatment as well but this one seems simple enough for anyone to find a way to contort their neck by themselves in order to restore normal curvature. Others require a skilled hand to pull off the maneuver. During positioning remember that tingling may not resolve until sufficient restoration of nerve homeostasis and/or reperfusion to the area by the artery has occurred. This is similar to how it takes time for your leg to come back online after it has fallen asleep when you're on the commode too long.
Symptoms that require further investigation would be a persistent tingling (let me be clear here: it ALWAYS tingles, it does not go away and then come back, it's constantly there) and especially disconcerting would be tingling growing increasingly noticeable (ie not with sudden and intermittent onset). See a doctor immediately if any of these symptoms are more along the lines of what you are experiencing.

Well not to sound like an old record but I to have had this very similar sensation. It began with a tingling feeling in the back right of my head and a couple of days after it was numbness in the back right side. After that I had these weird dizzy spells, probably due to anxiety that it was a brain tumour or something.
I went to my local GP who prescribed me aniexty medication. I got sick as a dog from it and went back 3 days later so she prescribed me 10mg of temazepam to help me sleep as the tingling/ vibrating was relentless.
Eventually I saw a neurologist I'm now 27 it began 2 years ago my neurologist diagnosed it as occipital neuralgia after doppler tests, MRI scans, CT scans, blood test's all came back normal and healthy? he prescribed me 25mg of prothiaden an anti depressant that he said I could increase the dose as time went on.
The weird thing is I just took his word for it but after reading lots of info on occipital neuralgia it seems its a sharp pain? mine is a tingling vibrating feeling. I also get this restless leg thing at night when I'm tired I have to move my legs and feet its very annoying. Then I go to sleep and its gone in the morning? Any way it's 2 years later now, I'm now taking 100mgs of prothiaden daily. I cant work because I get tired very easily, have these vertigo dizzy spells and feel like I'm going to pass out.
Like I said I'm 27 I'm a father of 3 and I think it could be 1 of 3 things?
1) The beginning stages of multiple sclerosis.
2) Some kind of mental condition.
3) Nerve damage in the pineal gland.
I would like to know what it is I wont be able to live the rest of my life like this.
This medication cant be good for me in a long term way. It masks the symptoms at the moment but in the last 2 years ive had to move from 1 tablet a day to 2 to 3 and now 4 ???
If anyone reading this has any advice of how to get this diagnosed I'm all ears I've seen 3 neurologist's the first 2 said nothing was wrong then the 3rd neurologist diagnosed it as occipital neuralgia. I wishfully accepted now Ill accept the truth anyone who can help me will be gratefully appreciated.
