My expierence was caused by Lamasil (sp?) a drug used to treat foot fungus. I was on it for about 2.5 months when this started happening to me. Took about a month after I stopped before I got my taste back. good luck.

I too have the same problem, what's going on" I don't smoke or drink either. But I do take 17 pills a day for rheum. Art., and I also have the dry mouth symdrome. Does this have anything to do with it?

I started having this problem about 3 weeks ago just days after getting a flu shot. The lack of any taste, nausea & the feeling as if something is stuck in my throat doesn't seem to be getting any better. I have been to my GP and dentist - I have been given a special mouth wash, which did nothing but cost $56.00. I was told to stop eating anything spicy, not to eat or drink anything with an acid such as orange juice. I have been told that it could be a reaction to the shot because I did have fever, swelling, double vision and a complete loss of energy following the shot. I plan to return to the doctor on Monday. If anyone has any wild idea what could be causing this please post a reply; I am miserable. I don't smoke, I do drink diet drinks, use sugar subs but unlike other people who have posted, I have NOT had a recent surgery. 49 yrs of age.

Did this problem go away? I have lost my taste for about a month now & just learned today it could be linked to the Crest Pro Health. I am tossing that stuff in the trash and hope that I can get taste back!

I am 55 and went to the Dentist to have my teeth cleaned 2 weeks and 6 days ago in the afternoon. That night when I ate dinner everything tasted bland and bitter. The next day I realized I had lost most of my taste and that my tongue felt funny, like it had been scorched or burned. I know this dentist uses Crest products. I went to my General Practitioner first and he told me he had never heard of this and to go directly to my dentist. I drove over to the dentist office and told the receptionist that I had lost my taste. She seemed concerned and went back to get the doctor. He sent her back with the message that it could not be anything he used. Wow, been seeing him for 23 years and that's the reply I received? I plan to go back this week and find out what it was. I also spoke to a friend who is a ear, nose, throat specialist. He told me that as the taste buds regenerate every 3 to 4 weeks I should get it back most likely. I researched this fact on the internet, and most articles say taste buds regenerate within two weeks. Very depressing but hope I will get it back eventually. I also have a dry mouth for the first time too. I also read with interest that over that last 4 years, most people in this blog posted only one time when they got the taste problem, and never again? Not sure if that's good or bad news? Were all in this together, let's keep talking and reposting with any good news!

i am 34 and i too have the same problem as all who have posted here. i am a sweet fanatic i remember enjoying chocolate cake, warm brownies with ice cream, chocolate chip cookies i remember having these and tasting fine in before febuary. and it seems suddenly i was not able taste anything chocolate, everything chocolate tastes bitter to me especially towards the back of the toungue/mouth. i do not recall having a cold at onset, i however was in a dusty environment and had a persistent cough, i took claritin and benadryl for relief. also i skimmed through this forum, and noticed some similar effects to why... i was around heavy metal / gun powder /lead caused by being at a gun range for 3 days. i also used splenda during this period to sweeten a coffee. it has been a roughly a month since being removed from the gun range and splenda, however just yesterday i tried famous amos cookies and was unable to taste the chocolate chips they tasted bitter. :( i have not contacted a doctor i doubt that i will, but any other "regular joe" info is appreciated.

If anyone learns what could be causing this, please let me know! It has been over a month now, one trip to the dentist, 3 trips to the doctor and a call back to the dentist and my third prescription! I still have no taste but now due to the meds I have taken I have a yeast infection in my mouth with white bumps all over my tongue. I tossed my Crest Pro Health products in the trash and within two days the sores inside my mouth and the burning tongue stopped. I am not sure if it was the meds or stopping the Pro Health but now I have to deal with the yeast issue & still no taste:( I have also gargled with warm salt water and just two days ago I tried Gentian Violet (which turned not just my tongue purple but my lips and teeth....not too pretty).

I too have lost my ability to taste anything sweet. I started a 10 day antibotic Cefprozil 250 mg (2 a day) - I finished those for sinus infection 2 days ago and I've yet to get it back. I've never had this sensation before and I hope it is temporary!

It is the Splenda I think, My taste started to come back so I ran into the kitchen just to see so I tasted the Splenda to see if it was sweet and the first taste was so I tasted it again and my taste slowly went away again and I haven't gotten it back since. I think Splenda has some explaining to do. I always used equal for years but was told how bad it was so I switched and from the very first try I lost my taste. I had had another issue so we weren't sure why I lost my taste but now I know it is comfirmed.

I hope after 5 months you have regained your sense of taste. I have not been able to taste anything now for 2 months. I have been to the doctor now 4 times, to the dentist - nothing seems to work. My tongue also has a burning feeling, sore throat and now I have sores in my mouth. I will be back for my next appt on 03/12/13 - but if anyone has any information on what could be causing this, please share! The next plan is a referral to the ear nose and throat specialist.

Any changes since you last posted? This taste problem, sore throat and sores in my mouth are starting to worry me.

I am one of those people who posted a very long time ago but I can never find these sites again later but happened upon it again today from an email I received. I had lost my taste over a couple days and thought I had gotten a bad sandwich at a restaurant. Couldn't taste salt or sweet......missing salt is the worst. Everything tasted not just bland but actually bad. The only think that tasted OK was popcorn. I went to the doctor and dentist and read all over the internet. I got that it could be drugs, toothpaste, etc. I wasn't taking anything but thyroid pills. I changed to Tom's natural toothpaste.....nothing worked. To make you feel better I can tell you that my taste did come back BUT it took almost a year. So don't lose hope. No one ever figured out what it was. I have lost my taste two more times since but, luckily, each of those times it was of short duration and know of no reason for it. Could be our immuniity at the time. All The Best, Chris

Carmste,
Thank you so much for replying. The fact that you have regained your taste gives us all hope. Interesting that you have a thyroid issue like myself. My taste is also "bad" not bland as well. I do plan to see a thyroid doctor shortly hoping they may have some thoughts on the issue. I am still convinced that the visit to the dentist and the cleaning was the reason for my loss. I ate 4 hours later and that is when I noticed the issue. I have heard many people describe the feeling of their tongue as scorched or burned and I too have that feeling. So glad again to hear your success in regaining your taste and thanks for taking the time to post for the rest of us to hear this. Also, I will try some popcorn! So few things taste good anymore!
