I lost my ability to taste sweet things a week ago. It could help any of you if you find any similarity with your case of the possible reasons. First, I was eating a lot of honey the day before. A *lot* of honey. No problem with that. Later that night I made myself a blended meal with fresh rosemary which I was trying for the first time in my life. Apparently while blending the rosemary gave off its extremely strong essential oils to the meal which later that night caused me to vomit. Afterwards I took measures to fix the acidic environment in my mouth by rinsing and gargling with a baking soda solution (which is a base that neutralizes acids). Immediately after that everything started tasting extremely salty, even water. By the next morning that was gone, but so was my ability to taste sweet. So, basically, either overdoing on sweet, or fresh rosemary (which might be allergy related?), or vomiting, or baking soda. It's definitely one of these 4 for me.

I have the same issue, with my sweet taste buds. I know what caused mine though, I had gotten my tongue pierced and they obviously went through a nerve or something. The issue that I am having is the fact that everything I had read over said that after removal and having time to heal the taste would come back.

Well needless to say just over a year later I still have no sweet tastes, but ever since the initial injury to my nerves I have been have issues with toothpaste. It seems that everytime I brush my teeth I get a severe burning sensation in my mouth, especially around the front of my tongue. Could it be my toothpaste that is preventing the taste from coming back? Are there any toothpastes that burn less?

Saw your post and I am currently on day two of no taste. The front part of my tongue seems like it tastes nothing, and I was using crest pro health--which I have stopped. I was wondering how long this condition lasted for you. I would love to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks

About 10 years ago I noticed that I couldnt taste the sweetness in anything I ate but if I ate a dinner (meat, gravy and veg) then my taste would be that of eating a jammy donut.  The only think that I can remember being fairly normal was potato.  Eventually, I decided to re-train my taste buds and, for instance, would try to eat a peach every day for a week or so and I did this with other fruits and in the end my taste buds accepted the flavour.  I would have to ask my husband if the fruit, cake etc was very sweet or moderately sweet and had to be guided by him.  Every so often now I do think  that something tastes wrong but realise that it is still a bit of a lingering problem.  I had extensive tests at the hospital but nothing was discovered that could be the cause.  However, at the time I was taking HRT and the hospital felt that it would be detrimental to stop taking the hormone simply to find out if it was the cause of the taste problem.  So, none the wiser ....................

I am sorry that you have lost your taste Mark. I feel for your situation as I am a chef and working with food and preparing it on many scales every day is an issue for me as well. I lost my taste after a bad flu-virus that was going around, and my tastes haven't returned properly as yet. As some of you have also probably been in a similar situation after a bad cold and a week or two after the flu has left you, your tastes returned as quickly as they went. Mine has not returned the same. It’s been about 6 months or more now, and I've regained about 40%. When I cook anything, I have to use memory, as I cannot use smell or taste to get those finer sharper tastes I want to achieve in my food. It’s been hard to re-educate myself as I so used my senses every day for what comes as second nature. If my memory fails me next, I am in deep S---. Some days my taste buds are sharper than others, but on a whole I'm working with a very small portion of what I had before. My personal wish for myself and all of you suffering from this affliction, is that we will wake up one day and find out the many delights we have regained and taken for granted. I live in hope. Yours in taste, G.

I am able to taste some savory foods- depends- had spagehetti for dinner- tasted a bit bitter- I HATE this- water almost does not taste right for me- Do we have to live like this forever? Will medical tests prove anything- a CAT scan show anything- It scares me- I do not even feel like eating- I always joked that they should make a diet pill that made food taste crappy- so we could diet and not taste food- well- careful what you wish for-has anyones doctors come up w/ a theory- I don't smoke- take drugs- changed anything in my physical being? Please let there be an answer someplace? Keep us all posted if so!

I have noticed that when I drink a lot of diet soda, I can't taste sugar at all! I am wondering if this might be the cause? I am seeing that other people are having the same issue on this forum and I'll just bet that the common denominator is diet soda? We also use Splenda which is why your comments caught my eye. I lost my sense of taste about nine months ago. I was taking Omeprazole for acid reflux. My dentist suggested I stop, which I did and it improved somewhat. I then tried another medication, Prevacid, and the sense of  taste got weak again. So I have stopped taking any anti-reflux meds except Pepcid. The sense of taste is slowly returning, but sweet taste is only slightly improved. I think it will just take time. I did lose twenty-five pounds, which is exactly the right amount, so it isn't all bad.

At one point the only things I could eat were, crispbread with butter spread, Rice Krispie treats, and some kinds of soup, the creamy ones. Everything else was so tasteless I couldn't get it down me.

When I get my taste back fully, I will appreciate good food and try not to eat any more rubbish!
