I noticed that I was losing the ability to taste sweetness in diet soft drinks. I was actually adding sweetner to diet coke, pepsi, and other diet soft drinks. I had been using rather large amounts of Splenda in iced tea and even drinking diet colas, and using coffee creamer made with Splenda because I thought Nutrasweet was bad for you. My daughter had heard that Splenda was bad for you too - so she encouraged me to start using Stevia (Truvia) instead of Splenda. Within only a week or two my ability to taste sweetness returned, so that diet colas now taste sweet to me without adding any sweetner. I hope this helps those of you who are using a lot of Splenda.

For those of you who are having issues with other tastes besides sweetness, I had read somewhere that there was a cold virus that can affect your sense of smell, and therefore taste. I don't know any more of the details, but think you need to research cold viruses.

I have this problem every few months for no reason. I have found that when food at home tastes like cardboard I can go out for a meal with friends and everything tastes really good. Also if I leave off eating something for a long time then eventually I can taste it. This causes a problem because you can't go on forever trying new things. Prayer also helps.

I had a similar experience recently, where I couldn't taste anything sweet. I also had tachycardia (high heart rate) and felt permanently cold following aortic surgery. The good news is a few days ago all 3 symptoms subsided suddenly after lasting about 3 months. Neither the doctor nor the cardiologist had tried to offer any explanation of a cause for any of those symptoms. Maybe they're related somehow...I do know I had very high C-reactive protein levels in my blood, indicating an infection of some kind. Here's hoping that's the end of it, because I've always loved my sweets!

Well I was on here last night ,because I could not taste any thing sweet, And truthfully none of what I ate or drank tasted correct. I had a bad cold and this was followed by an ear infection. Now a day later I have full blown Bell's Palsy. Yes half of my face is not working and every thing still tastes like s.......well not good any ways. I am posting this just because I saw a lot of loss of taste bud magic. But heard little else. Well hope this helps somewhat ......I am thinking maybe a lot of these posts may be a mild form of Bell's Palsy.

I posted the original story about my inability to taste sweets but could taste and smell everything else. My neurologist said my 7th or  8th cranial nerve is good. I have been reading the many replies and thank you all for taking the time to share your similar experience. Some people have lost all sense of taste but that is not my experience.  I have noticed a few common threads and they are infections, medication side effects, Bell's Palsy, and mostly use of artificial sweeteners such as Splenda. Now thinking back, i notice the loss of taste of sugar since using Splenda about a year ago. I used to use NutraSweet, Equal or aspertame  (the Blue package) and i did not have much problem tasting sweets unless had just brushed my teeth and drink orange juice with breakfast and the juice would taste sour but that was a normal and very temporary effect from the toothpaste and would wear off during the day. Many  diet soft drinks that used to use Nutra-sweet now have switched to Splenda (yellow package) and you may have not even noticed because it is such a tiny logo on the bottle and i need my reading glasses to see it. I think the body or tongue gets used to one type of artificial sweetener and if you switch than you may not taste sweets or very little. SOme people state they don't use sweeteners at all or atleast not artificial sweeteners but i just discovered that my toothpaste has sodium saccharin which leaves an aftertaste. I needed my reading glasses to read the tiny print on the ingredients list. I am going to switch to a different toothpaste. Even some cough medicines can have artificial sweeteners and you would not even taste it because you have a cold but the damage may have already been done. I have started using Stevia type sweeteners but i taste it a little bitter , just barely sweet. I would like to know if there are any class action lawsuits for Splenda, Sacharin, or Nutrasweet. I have recently learned that Splenda is harmful to the good intestinal flora which is used to help digestion. I don't think that would effect taste of sweets but it could indicate that Splenda needs more research before people continue consuming it. I do have some mildly  pinched nerves near C-5, C-7 & C8 in my neck and some spondylosis and osteoarthritis in my neck but the neurologist says that won't cause loss of taste unless the cranial nerve is pinched and that would cause all of the taste and smell sense to be lost.

I would like to offer some information about the loss of taste without having flu's, infections or strokes etc. It has been my experience over my 55 years of seeing many strange occurrences that happen in the human body for absolutely no reason. I have had this very same complaint, in that the sweet flavours were lost but not the loss of smell. There are a few areas in the body that go through natural detoxing. The tongue is one of many areas of the body that when heavy metals are ingested from dental fillings (mercury), insecticides, heavily sprayed fruit and vegetables and anything else that is absorbed anywhere else in or on the body. The body expels them in the way of a detox. Some individual’s expel toxins and heavy metals through their feet, others from their groin area and under the arms, scalp area and others through their tongue, or sometimes all these areas at the same time. It is important in times of any loss of senses to the body, you give the body plenty of help by way of giving it plenty of good quality water to aid in the natural detoxing that is going on. I have found over the years that it is also helpful to keep off hot spicy foods for up to a month. Mustards, peppers, chillies etc, will give time for a settling down period while your body is detoxing. Remember, there is always a reason and a cause for everything. It usually is closely related and right under your nose. Hope you have found this helpful. Faithfully Hydrate.(I)

I had a small surgery 2 days ago with general anesthesia. I have honey every morning, but i could not taste any sweet this morning. I did not take any medicine after surgery. the only thing i can think of is side effect of anesthesia. But after googling it, i did not see much post about relationship between these two except here. Can anybody tell me if i will recover? this is terrifying

I made a post here about 6 months ago when I suddenly lost my sense of taste for sweets, like many people here I had no success of finding a solution. I pretty much adapted and got used to not being able to taste ice cream, etc. Then about 3 weeks ago I had a really bad cold that I even lost my voice. I went to the doctors and he suggested I just gargle some salt water and let it recover on it's own. From then I gargled/rinsed with warm salt water 2-3 times a day and magically I noticed I was able to taste sweets again! I'm not sure if it was because of the salt water but just wanted to share my story. A coworker also gave me some Jameson's Zinc Lozenges which apparently is good for preventing colds, I took a few of those tablets and I just remembered reading somewhere that Zinc may help with loss of taste...

Note: When I gargled the salt water, It made me feel like I wanted to throw up only I didn't and I hocked/spit out a lot of flem. Not sure if it was from the cold or if it was what's causing my loss of taste for sweets. Not sure if my sense of taste for sweets will last but I'm gonna enjoy it

Hope this info will help some of you

Hello - I don't know if this will help you or not - but I have had a metal taste in my mouth and nausea for almost 4 months now.  I saw my doctor had 6 bottles of blood taken - no results why, saw an ENT who proved I can smell but can't taste salt or sugar, he did an xray to show that I didn't have a sinus infection causing the problem.  Today I saw a gastro doctor and he did an Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), which showed I had a hiatal hernia - not sure why I have this - I am only 5 foot 2 inches tall and 114 pounds - not over weight!  The metal taste has been so bad sometimes that I want to drive myself to the hostipal and get admitted!  The test didn't show any damage to my esogophas (sp?) he gave me carafate drug that I have to take before meals and before bed - we shall see if it works or not.  He is still not sure if the hernia is causing this awful taste and inability to taste food.  If this medication dosn't work he told me that I have to be put asleep and a camara put into my esopophas (sp?) to monitor the stomach acid.  FYI - my regular doctor also told mt that it could be a brain tumor as your senses begin in the brain - although they don't think that is my problem as I had a brain MRI last year to check on my bells palsy - I got bells palsy 8 years ago when I was pregnant - that is an entire different story!  An awful one!  Anyway if you are having this problem you may want to get that checked out - I will keep you posted if the medication helps.  God Bless -

I want to report that after 3 weeks I have finally regained my sweet taste! My doctor said it could be my low thyroid. I have hypothyroidism so he upped my dose of armour thyroid. He said it could take a while and I guess he was right. You might have your thyroid checked. Hope this helps! Good luck!
