I can't believe the number of people reporting the same symptoms as me. I have lost my sense of taste for sweet about a week ago. Everything that used to be sweet now taste like nothingness minus the artificially sweetened stuff that I have tried so far. I did have a pretty irritating illness about a week and a half before my symptom began. During that week and a half I was in Costa Rica and I could taste everything just fine. The day I was leaving Costa Rica I notice that the coffee I drank was not very tasty but I thought the guy just had junk coffee. Now I realize that I cant taste sweet. I really do hope my gustatory senses come back. I miss it. Well, on the positive... I think it will be easier to lose weight now. haha

I didn't have time to read this thread completely, but wanted to post the solution to my problem.  It was my toothpaste.  Crest Pro Health toothpaste causes these symptoms and more for many, many users.  I have always used Crest toothpaste, but the newest line "Pro Health" has new and improved ingredients that cause an severe "allergic reaction" for many users.   I won't take the time to post a long description here, but it's easily found online.  Dry mouth, sores in the mouth and on the tongue, cheeck cells peeling, swollen and irritated gums-the list goes on.  This might not be the solution for everyone on this thread, but I wanted to share what I discovered in case it would help someone else.

Good luck!

Really. I was using that toothpaste, but I stopped. I did not have those symptoms, and since changing toothpaste nothing has improved. However things have changed somewhat, I have had an infected tooth extracted, and it's possible that this will help.
Thanks,
Mick.

I am so glad not to be alone in this. Dairy tastes spoiled, fruit tastes fermented and hamburger tastes rancid. Alcohol burns my throat but I cannot taste it. I was on an antifungal med for 30days and after a week of that being over everything changed. I have been to the dr twice. I have lost 15 pounds which is cool but I don't have an appetite due to the distortion. The dr said to give it 6 weeks to get the medicine completely out of my system. I cannot drink milk, soda or any juices. I am stuck drinking water which tastes like well water. I have even put hot sauce on my tongue and nothing. The pharmacist said it could be acid reflux so I took an over the counter cure for 2 weeks and nothing. I changed my mouthwash to a non alcohol formula and no change. I eat for texture now. My sense of smell is amazing. It has never changed. If anyone found anything that has worked please post it!

I know the original post was 6 years ago, but I found this when I too completely lost my sense of sweet taste, but I figured out what it was: Cipro.  The first time, it came back three weeks after finishing the drug.  This time, I had it prescribed for something else, and the onset was sooner.  I'm going to switch to a different antibiotic and hope it comes back again.  Very frustrating.  It's listed as one of the rare symptoms of Cipro, but honestly what isn't, so I wasn't sure that's what it was.

I have been diagnosed as a diabetic for seven years and have been using artificial sweeteners all my life. Within the last 3 years, I have taken large amounts of antibiotics for various illnesses and injuries. I lost my ability to taste sweet about a year and a half ago. I can still taste sour, salty and other flavors but I can not taste sugar or artificial sweeteners anymore and they leave a bitter taste in my mouth. I have not been to a Doctor to get any answers, but several people have offered opinions about the use of antibiotics and artificial sweeeteners. I have not had any antibiotics for about four months and I am trying to taper off use of artificial sweeteners to see if my taste for sweet will return. I will keep everyone posted.

I dont see where anyone has updated this topic with any new information, improvements or results from visiting a doctor.

I have the same issue of not being able to taste sweet or saltiness in food.  All is bland and water taste bad.  I cannot tolerate the taste of many foods that i use to love.  I have lost 9 pounds since Nov 22, 2012 and still have not gotten my taste back.  I can smell but it's not as sharp as it use to be either.  Prior to losing my taste, I had a very keen sense of taste and smell.   I am seeing an ENT for this condition and has put me on a low dose (250mg of biaxcin daily) for 12 weeks to see if this is a sinus infection issue.  I am not a fan of antibiotics for this length of time, in fear of liver toxicity.  So, I have to pick my battles.   I decided to see an GI Dr. this week 12/14 to discuss the issue and he explained to me that the problem would have nothing to do with my stomach.  It can only be two things (1) a very deep sinus infection, or (2) a neurological issue.  He said that the sensors on the tongue may be damaged due to ????.   When you eat the tongue's taste buds sends the signal to the brain and thats how you identify and taste what your eating.  He asked if i had been in an accident where there may have been trauma to the head, face or neck.  In my case it's No in the last 5yrs.   Also, asked if i had jaw pain when I woke up or during the day, do you grind or clench your teeth when you sleep.   Do you have TMJ?  Said, that any trauma to jaw, neck or face is where I should be looking into.  Told me if it were him, he would go see an Neurologist.  I did go see a Dentist who fitted me with a night guard because I was Clenching my teeth and I was having jaw soreness but I didnt know why.  So now I have to be careful not to clench teeth during the day specially if I am stressed.  I am hoping this is the problem and it's just gonna take time for it to heal.

I have been seeing doctors for this issue since October 2012 and no results yet.  It may seem not long for some but it's killing me not being able to  enjoy the sweetness in a fruit or juice or soda etc.   I know how everyone must feel who has posted here.  BTW, I also asked if zinc deficiency could have something to do with it and said it's rare.   I decided to order a zinc taste test online and will try it and see what kind of results i get.  Hopefully, it will get here soon.  I have been a vegan for the past 6 months so it's possible I could be zinc deficient.  That would be my dream if that is all it was.  If this zinc test turns out normal, i plan on seeing a Neurologist.  I just need to find one as good as the GI dr. who really gave me options and encouragement to trust and educate myself because no one is gonna do it for me.

I would like to see or hear from some of the folks on this forum and share updates to their condition so we can help or give each other hope and suggestions.  If there is a doctor who happens to read this forum, please share some of your experiences and any advise you feel would be beneficial.   I have hope:-D!!!!!  Hope to hear some feedback.  Good luck to all of us.

Upon more searching I have discovered I think the reason for my inability to taste foods (its a terrible experience), and I think it is from Lamisil which is a drug that is used to cure athletes foot. It is a 4 month regiment and I had been on it for nearly 3 months. My feet are much improved, but when I read in other places about people who have experienced the same problem I quit taking it. Tuesday the 11th was the first day I have not taken the drug. One lady I found on the net said it took her 27 weeks before she finally got what she would call "normal". So I am hopeful I will have my taste back by June 2013. I just hope it is indeed temporary.

I do find that I can taste Grapefruit pretty well. I never like the bitterness of grapefruit, but I don't taste it now and actually like th fruit better. But not worth it at all.

Wow!! I feel for many of you, horrible not being able to taste anything sweet, salty or sour. I have a very limited taste loss. The problem is I cannot taste sugar when adding it to coffee or to a lesser extent, tea. What used to take 3 packets of sugar to taste now takes about 6-7 packs at least before I can even begin to taste the sugar in coffee, maybe 5 before I can taste it in tea. I can enjoy cookies, apples and just about anything else mentioned just fine-condition seems to be confined to coffee/tea.

Only thing I've seen on this post that may relate to me is the Lamisil use. I don't use it everyday, as in a regimen, but I use it about 2-3 times a week as I play alot of soccer. I've been using Lamisil for some time, but then again the loss of taste has been a gradual decline, not the sudden occurrence that many on this board describe. Maybe I will see what happens if I curb my Lamisil use.

I lost my sense of taste, presumably because of a round of antibiotics, or possibly mold exposure, or a mixture of both.  I developed what appeared to be thrush, but the medication my dr. prescribed for it did not seem to help. At first I could taste nothing at all - just felt textures, and it was really disturbing.    I read somewhere about someone gargling with apple cider vinegar, and somewhere else about someone gargling with salted water, so I combined both and started gargling with that mixture several times a day. Since I couldn't taste anything, it wasn't that bad. It seemed to help with the coating on my tongue at least. I brushed my tongue several times a day too.    Eventually, I began tasting everything except sweet.  I kept up with my gargling regimen and after several weeks, I got my taste back completely.  I don't know if this will help any of you, but if you have thrush like symptoms, it's worth a shot.

I've heard that water or juice fasting for extended periods (20-40) days will give the body a chance to heal itself.  I lost my sense of taste from a nasty cold/sinus infection and also had frequent bladder infections.  I did a 20 day water fast and it came back and my bladder healed.

You do need to have some extra weight on your body that you will lose during the fast and should take vitamins.  You can search Google for fasting and what ailments it can help.  You should be in good health, not diabetic, no heart issues, etc. before trying.

An alternative would be to undertake a raw organic diet of fresh fruits and vegetables only and remove anything "processed". If its not raw fruit or vegetables, don't eat it.

It's not guaranteed but it does help you feel better.  Doctors claim it is quack science but it is the body's way of healing itself.  They don't like that you might be able to fix your own problems and take away business.
