I'm a 22 year old male. I've always been healthy till about 4 months ago. I got and ear infection from my allergies. I got on an antibiotic (azyithromycin?) and i got really sick from it. I vommited every day for a week. When i went back to the Dr. she gave me aciphex. thats stopped the vommiting, however this tightness and gag refelx feeling in my throat continued. Also my tounge turned white (it will not come off). The gag reflex made me not want to eat which in turn made my stomache worse. Finally I got off this aciphex after a couple months. My stomache was really bad for the first week off the stuff but its better now and I finally have an appitite back. However the feeling in my throat persists. Some days it is much worse then others but it seems like it's always there. It makes me feel nausiated but I know that my stomache feels alright. Whatever is causing this seems to be in my throat. Could it be related to my tounge being white? My dr. does not think I have oral thrush (although I've never been tested for it). I have had blood tests for thyroid and kidney/liver funtion and everything checks out alright. What could be causing this???? Please any help would be appreciated greatly. Thank you

Does the feeling in your throat cause you to gag.
When does this occur? When you wake up or threw out the entire day?
Does it feel like there is a build up of mucus around your gag reflex?

Anyways these are my problems, which are consistant with your stomach problems. I have had these problems for some time now also and looking for a solution like yourself. Other question have you smoked in the past? Drink dariey? Do these problems become worse when you get nervous?

I tend to get anxious at the fact that i know that the gagging is going to happen and whwn it does i end up gagging.I usually end up hawking somkinda mucus 'down from my gagreflex if you want to call it that.

After i get over the "attack", as i like to call them, i calm down and eat something, still feeling bad i might add. Note i never feel good threout the entire day. I had to quit school and work because of this because i would be in public and have a gagging attck and start to have panic attacks. I tend to never leave the house because prior to leaving i always have an attack. Absoulutly ruined my life to this day forward. I am only 20. I also was a moderate smoker but quit about 3 months ago. My problems have been persistant for about 1 year.

Anyways thats my story hope u elaborate on you halfmore.

Most of the time I don't end up gagging. I just feel like I need to. It's no fun. I am still able to go to work and school, but I do avoid certian activities because of this. I'm currently looking into my alergies. I am allergic to dust mites and I recently found some mold growing in the windows of my appartment. I have an appt with a throat doctor in 2 weeks so hopefully he can offer some insight. I am thankful that this isn't something that is affecting me 24/7, but it is there alot. Also, I do have some anxiety, but it's mostly all caused from being sick latley. I've never had a problem with it at all before this. As I have slowly started to feel better, the anxiety has decreased considerably. Hope ya feel better

I've had this strange swelling develop in the deeper part of my throat. It feels like it's about two inches above the v-notch of my collarbones, right above my sternum, but inside the esophagus. My soft pallet is always swollen, too, and I can't even bring myself to describe the kind of c**p I "hock up" once in a while.

This swelling or growth or constriction makes me gag all the time, to the point that I'm constantly yanking at my shirt collars because I feel like they're choking me. There's no real soreness that goes along with it, but it does seem to worsen when I get anxious about it. I don't know whether to attribute it to smoking (which I've quit), constant reflux, allergies, or all of them. But this is freaking me out.

Can't afford a doctor. So I'm dreading going back to work at my seasonal and very physical job, because I don't know if I'll be able to move without gagging every two seconds. If it's cancer, I wish it would just get it over with. This is horrible.

This is a little bit different than the other posts.
The people here have a problem with the gagging.
I, on the other hand, end up gagging to make myself feel better. I'll go through a series of gags (possibly 5-6 relexes) then a final gag that causes me to open my mouth then salivate almost profusely.
Why do I feel this way, does anyone else have similar feelings. I admit it is a problem, only in the way that I don't know if this continues, will it cause something bad in the long run, or is it a sign of something wrong with me?

I feel the same way. its like theres something lodged there and the more I swallow the more it wants to come up. So I embrace the gag, and when I throw up it doesnt come out. BAHHH its soooooo annoying. I want to cut my head off. has your gone away yet?

all of these posts have some kind of relation with my problem but none sound exactly like it.
i am a 16 year old female.
no really big health problems [i do get bronchitus every year around winter(my dad has smoked cigarettes since before i was born and i started smoking around 14-15)]
but ive had this weird gagging problem since i was in middle school (about 4-5 years possibly longer)
ive kinda become used to it because its been happening for so long
and i never talked to any Dr.'s about it just because it never seemed like too big of a deal
but its REALLY annoying!
nothing that ive noticed triggers it like what everyone else has said
(no new meds, infections, or anything else )

but at random moments throughout the day i gag
like, i feel like im going to puke but i never do
it doesnt happen everyday but on the days that it does
it happens multiple times.
its gotten a little bit better in the past 2 years (it only happens a couple days a week now)
but when i was 14 and i first met my (now) bestfriend
it happened alot (everday)
so much to the point where she thought i had serious bulemia (i dont for the record)

so if anyone can tell me wtf this is
i would really appriciate it
thanks ahead of time.
Sara.

I have a similar problem, i will wake up in the morning and Will not be able to eat breakfest, Just the thought or smell of food makes me want to gag and when i go to the bathroom to try and throwup, Nothing will come out But it does make me feel better until an hour or so later and il want to gag again, I am taking medication for stomach olsers so i dont know if the Stomach olsers has anything to do with me gagging,
Ive tried to not think about food, and try to breath threw my mouth to avoid the smell of food, But that makes me want to gag as well, The only thing really that has helped me not want to gag (especially when brushing my teeth, because thats when i want to gag the most), is to sing a song in my head and just not think about it. I am planning to go to the doctors about it soon, But in the mean time, Does anyone know anything that could help me not gag?

the problem with gagging is almost 95% caused by anxiety? even if you are not aware of it, it is. it is a natural reaction that when you get tense you restrict your breathing slightly tighten up in the chest and throut and will end up gagging. the longer this persists the more phycological it will become. i am 20 and i have had this problem since i just turned 19 iv never been ill before or had any problems with anxiety and stuff i have allways been a relaxed person and been very out going.
at the start of 2009 is when i started to notice the gagging problem i had just got into quite a seriously relationship after being single for over a year, i had alot of presure going on a work also started another job and i had a number of social and family oriantated problems going on. i got quite sick during the winter i had a throut infection and chest infection and developed PND or post nasal drip after i got better i noticed how flemy and conjested i allways was and i noticed that when i was with my girl firend or her family i would never feel hungry and the idea of food didnt appeal to me this concurned me after a number of times trying to eat made me feel kinda sick and trying to eat food to be polite resulted in me almost gagging.
this went on for 6 months or so when i discovered that the antisipation of going to see my girl firend or my firends in general would make me very ancxious i was self concious that i would feel sick and begin to gag and this added stress in an allready stressed life style made me more paroiode about this feeling.
it became worse and worse to the point where i would avoide going out and make up excuses to go out and even the thought of going out made me very ancxious,
my doctors perscribed a number of different any anxciety drugs and anydepresents these did nothing but make me feel incredably ill one even made me blind for about 4 or 5 mins not fun.
i started to an ostiopath just after christmas one i used to see as a young teenager for my back he had a look at me and instantly sore the problem he said that huge amount of stress anxciety and worry had built up inside me for so long without being properly relised that it has been affecting my nurvace system and ulitmatly affecting the nurves in the gag reflex. the only way he said i could solve this problem is for them to treat the huge amount of trapped tention within the chest and thout area so that i can breath freely without restriction so that i can allow my body to heal the damaged and censitve nurves. it has been 6 weeks or somthing now and i feel considerably less stresed and more relaxed but the gaging is almost still as bad, i will re post a comment in the next few months to update how my progres has come

Hey everyone, my Name is Eric and I am a 21 year old male.

I googled my symptoms and found this forum and was very surprised to read about all your symptoms and how they match exactly to mine.

So here's my story.

I am a college student at a school in Virginia. This past year my best friend and I moved into an apartment off campus. I learned from him in August of 09 that he was having issues with his throat (gaging and vomiting occasionally) and never thought twice about it until January of 2010 when i began to share the same issues. I was in a Biology class taking notes when all of a sudden my gag reflex became unbearable. Being a baby about gagging and having braces, i learned from my Dentist a breathing technique used to calm the reflex so you can overcome it... That didn't work.
So from that day to the present day I have had "gagging attacks" off and on. Some are so extreme that i can't talk or stand without irritation and discomfort. I've had days when i almost forgot i had problems, those days i covet.

So i went to my local doctor and told them what was going on. Told them that i felt like i had something lodged in my throat, it was worst in the mornings, but on some days it didn't matter. After a strep throat swab and a lot of prodding at my neck, she anounced i had allergies and gave me a nasal spray and 5 mg of Claritin to fight it off...

Well, that was a month ago and i'm still having problems. My roommate went to see his doctor and they told him it was acid reflux. So he took Prevacid for 4 weeks and found no comfort either. I tried the same thing because i was also told to try it out. Same result.

So, i've come up with a few theories:

1) I don't smoke, but i do consume a good deal of caffeine. The day i had my first "attack" i was drinking my routine coffee. I have noticed that coffee in any form and caffeine rich drinks like Rockstar energy drinks or Red Bull tend to set off or worsen my condition.

2) I also have a lot of back pain from weakened muscles in my back. I've noticed that when i have bad days I am supper tense. I also notice that my tongue gets plastered to the top of my mouth when i react to the gagging. Just a thought, but it could be a muscle reaction, almost like a spasm that causes the lymph-nodes to swell and put pressure on the throat causing the gagging... Could also explain why swallowing makes things worsts and same with talking.

Other than that i've got nothing. I plan on going back to the doctor for plan B and go from there.

Has anyone found a cure or something to help with this problem?

I'll try to help if i find anything!

Your symptoms sound a lot like mine, if it is not allergies my bet would be stress or extreme anxiety

well I did the same for a long time and it just got more intense to where I gaged for about 2 hrs straight.and wore out an just tired I said no more an grabbed the lil hanging thing in throat and started wiping it cause it feels like something is always on it.an wow my gag reflex about killed me...I tried everything on the market nothing helps an I do smoke an drink an live in the country lots of tree's anyway ...I can't take allergy meds I'm allergic..hubby got me a netti pot it helped a lil.because all this will cause dry mouth or not enough saliva which in turn causes a sulfur gas an that causes bacteria...so one day after a good year or so of feeling like something in throat an white in back of tongue an food always sticking in throat an constant making myself burp because it eased it..I went to a ent specialist an he numbed up my nose an throat an put a camera up nose an down in to throat and said everything was normal except for a lil irritation explained for all the gagging.. He said let's try some reflux meds for 1 week an see if it helps at all or goes away if not we would try more things ....and omg 2 day's later it was gone totally gone ..I don't remember the name of the meds they were blue/white capsules.and lost insurance a few weeks later an couldn't go back an now 2 yrs later I can't for the life of me remember his name an he was in a huge dr office so..now it is all back an worse than ever no over the counter stuff works.and hubby has new job an no insurance just yet...so back to netti pot an saline drops ..and alot of sleepless nights an burping gagging, hacking and just plain miserable because when i eat it always get's stuck an causes a major gag fest..as for the white tongue it isn't from any reflux of poor dental care it is a mouth problem that some peeps get where we don't get the saliva that we should it's kinda like dry mouth an because of low saliva we have less oxygen an that cause a bad bacteria. an when we use mouth wash or toothpaste with alcohol an the other stuff it actually makes it worse cause the alcohol makes what little saliva we have dry up...so the trick is too use an all natural toothpaste and put on dry toothbrush an then put baking soda on an brush.then get a all natural mouth rinse an rinse for 1 min no rinsing with water at all not even baking soda it will eventually kill all bacteria and you can order a saliva stimulating medicine too...

I had boughts of constantly having a gagging sensation and gagging fits for quite some time. I equated to anxiety until i realized what the problem really was. Anxiety increases tension. I bet many people here have pain in their backs, tense shoulders, and tense necks. This may or may not be your problem. I f you yawn alot, this is another sign. Yawning, in my case, was trying to open and stretch my throat because it was always tense and I couldnt figure out why. Try this...tilt your head back as if strecthing your neck. If you feel tension in the muscle under your jaw, this is most likely why your jagging. The muscle under the jaw, if not stretched, you constirct the throat and preferably the adams apple, making it sensitive. When you get an anxiety attack, your muscles tense even more...leaving it even more sensitive. So when you wake up through the morning and throughout the day...do neck stretches. You may not believe this works, but I have yet to have this sensation of gagging againg since doing this.. Try it. You might be surprised. Sometimes we think the problem is something really bad, or is a mental dilemma. But it is in fact usually something so simple that we dont even realize it.

I have the same problem. I smoke a lot less than i used to. I smoke newport 100s. I notice I get a gag reaction mostly when I feel bloated or full. I also noticed if i have to use the bathroom but feel like having a cig first normally causes it. I'm 24 years old. Also I noticed when the gags get bad or if I throw up which also sometimes happens I look in the mirror at my throat and notice sometimes it looks really small and thin but the odd thing is when i feel better it looks normal again. I also noticed if i take a pull of a cig too fast or too big a gag will happen. Since i smoke hundreds what I do now is half way through a cig I rotate it about 180 degrees so that I seem to be inhaling less tar. If you look at the filter one half seems to fill up with tar near the top so I rotate it so i'm not reinhaling the old tar. I'm starting to switch over to e-cigs because it's really starting to become annoying. One more thing I also noticed if it's really windy outside it sometimes happens I don't know if anyone else experiences that.

If your a mouth breather and you keep your tongue in the wrong position, which can happen if you smoke, youll gag alot.
