Wow, this is a relief to read. After almost six years after having a partial thyroidectomy, the miserable feeling of tightness and sometimes the awful feeling going up my throat, has really scared me. I'm relieved by taking Xanax. I rarely take it because it helps, but I don't want to become dependent on it.

I just started having it after almost 6 years! I guess it's normal as the scar tissues increases over time. It is miserable!!

I'm having some of those same exact problems! This is post op one month. I feel concerned and frustrated because ibuprofen/Tylenol don't touch it. It affects my sleep too. I'm wishing I had tried ,its conservative measures first, ,o matter how scary cancer is.

I had the left half of my thyroid gland cut out in 1992 because of a small papillary tumor and my neck has never been the same. At first it was a tightness in the left neck and shoulder. Today I have reduced movement of my head to the left because of pain in the back neck. Something happened with the neck that made it weaker. Also the left nostril and eye became swollen because of raised return (venous) blood pressure. Nick

When you say "pull the incision site", what exactly did you do? Did you pull from the sides of the incision, or top and bottom? How often did you do it before you noticed relief from the tightness?

You are not imagining anything. The tightness and pain is very real and most unpleasant. But life is more important than our very real reaction to surgery, cancer or not. God bless you. Stay the course, it will be well work the upsets with feeling we are being choked. I have complaints but too busy to let them take over my life, which belongs to me.

I have a TT 9/7/17. I was fine, no swelling until about 4 days post op. I have sever muscle tightening that goes from collar bones to jaw bone. It is not so visible on the outside but when you touch my neck it is extremely hard. I have extreme difficulty swallowing when this happens and cannot eat. I get lightheaded, headaches, and the only thing that provides relief is laying down and icing the area. I just have to wait out the worst of it. It flares up intermittently. (more days than not though) My Dr is telling me to just be patient, that he had to do a lot of pulling, tugging and scraping. My thyroid was very large and had 2 cancerous tumors. I have found that it gets worse when I am warm. For example It was 74 degrees out and I sat outside under shade for 20 minutes with a breeze. I started to swell almost immediately and it took almost a week for it to relax again. Then yesterday I sat down at a restaurant that was warm and immediately swelled and had to leave within 5 minutes. Today I am miserable, cannot really turn my head side to side because of how tight the muscles are and can't eat at all because I'll choke. I am scared this will be my life forever. I cannot go far from home without my husband in case I swell up because we have 3 children, 1 who is 7 months old. I cannot hold him or carry him without it getting worse as well. I'm 29. This isn't a life I want to live. Its nice to know that I'm not alone but I need to figure out how to fix this so that I can live my life with my children. I have hashimoto's and I can't tolerate the cold well but now am forced to live in it if I want to breathe. I just want answers and some relief. Mr Dr acts like it's all in my head.

If you have a total thyroidectomy you will be on medication for the rest of your life.

Have you had myofascical release therapy? If not, you need this now... I am five months post op and still going to therapy for this very thing. The myofasical therapy (deep tissue stretches and massage of the neck helps to relax the muscle trauma from the surgery) The vice like feeling is that your muscles are all contracting because of the position your neck was in at length in surgery. I have the same issues, but am showing improvement with myofacsical release. Your ENT, or surgeon can refer you for this therapy. This is done via physical therapist. Pray you feel better soon! :) Acts 17:28

Please talk to your surgeon or ENT about myofascial release via physical therapy. It is a specific treatment for this type of surgery and very effective. I am five months post op since July 27.17 and have had the same issues. Very difficult surgery with much pain. I am beginning to respond to the myofascial therapy. Pray you feel better soon! :) Without this type of therapy you will not improve on your own.
