I had my tyroid removed 2 years ago and still have the same tightness in my neck. Sometimes I feel like I am choking. Don't know if this will help but when I feel this way I take clonazepam it helps me relax and the tightness goes away. I only take this med. when I feel the tightness coming on . Hope this helps

Did your choking feeling ever resolve? I just had this done and am feeling the same way.

I had the left side of my thyroid removed. I don't have to take any medications, but I suffer from the tightness and pulling feeling on my neck. I had the surgery in July of 2013. Some days are worse than others, but it won't go away and I'm not sure why. I thought of trying some Ben Gay or sports cream and see if that gives me some relief. It's more annoying than anything.

I am a massage therapist (22 years), and I have read all of these posts. I am very surprised that most of you have not been given physical therapy (neck stretching and strengthening) exercises post (if not pre) surgery to deal with scar tissue, adhesions and muscular soreness/conditioning from the surgery and entubation. I would be seeking a massage therapist skilled in anterior/lateral, as well as posterior neck work (Paul St. John method, John Barnes myofascial release, David Kent...these are only a few of the recommended neuromuscular methods for the treatment of anterior neck issues). I would be surprised if some regular stretching and appropriate neuromuscular massage wouldn't significantly help all of you. But do your research. Not all massage therapists have the training to do this kind of work!

I am going through the exact same thing everyone else is. I have been to 8 ENT specialist's and noone can tell me anything. The last one told me I have scar tissue and it can't be removed and it will always be there. He said if they took it out, it would become more and even worse than it is right now. I can't see me going through this much longer, the pain is unbearable. I sure wished someone would of told me about this before the surgery. I went to Pittsburgh, cause I was always told it was better there, NOT. I had Robotic Surgery under the rt armpit. I have been to hell and back with this. Oh God help us all going through this!!

I had a TT two years ago. I am a teacher and can't make it through a day without struggling to speak. My voice feels exhausted and I often feel there is a lump in my throat. I have regular scans and the doctor says he didn't damage any nerves. My vocal chords are definitely not what they used to be. I'm considering giveing up my teaching career because of the frustration. The doctors just say to give it time, but it's been two years. They want to blame it on GERD, but my vocal problems began with the thyroid. I had 29 nodules, all benign.

I too had a total thyroidectomy. I noticed a lump on my neck area and had a biopsy done. I also had numerous abnormal growths in my thyroid gland, but the biopsy came back benign. My doctor suggested I wait six months to have a partial thyroidectomy, but I only wait four months and had the surgeon remove the entire thing. Lo and behold, once they removed the entire thyroid and began running additional tests, it turned out I had Stage 1 Cancer. I am sorry you are experiencing the tightness, because I have the exact same symptoms. Although the tightness and inability to swallow correctly is a little alarming at times, I would have this surgery done again if it meant prolonging my life. I pray your symptoms get better for you. You are blessed not to have pain. I cannot wear a necklace or t-shirt comfortably anymore. But that's okay, because I beat cancer.

Thank you for the exercises. I had my thyroid removed in May 2014 and I am feeling the tightness or lump in throat. I am going to be doing your suggested exercises. Any other suggestions?

I had a nodule on 1 of my parathyroids removed 8 months ago. The surgery went well but ever since then my glands would swell up, I felt a tightness around my throat, sometimes I can barely turn my head because my neck is so stiff and soar and now I seem to have a hard time breathing that sometimes am afraid I'll die of suffocation. Been to see the ENT but seems like once the surgery has been done they don't want to hear from you. I am supposed to have a root canal but I'm afraid I won't be able to breathe and my dentist is being very cautious [which I applaud her for that] she will not do anything until my breathing is normal. Don't know what to do or take.

I can totally identify. I had a TT and left/right neck dissection in 2010. In 2012 the surgeon removed more papillary thyroid cancer from under my chin in the middle. So far, so good cancer-wise since then. However, the tightness is getting worse. I am going to see a plastic surgeon for an opinion the middle of next month - Oct 2014. Have you gotten any relief? I massage with Bio-Oil or olive oil - no lasting effect.

So glad I found that suggestion about the exercises, I did them both immediately about three times on the first day, the relief was instantaneous!
