I have been having this problem too. I've been to about 5 doctors within the last year, and no one can tell me what the problem is. They all recommend physical therapy and stretching. Based on my research over the last month, I think I may have AS with costocondritis. I'm going to another appointment next week. We'll see what happens.

Has anyone else investigated the possible mold / fungal connection, and if so what kind of doc would you see to get that looked at? Cardiologist? I work about 12 hours a day in a very moldy environment, and other people I work with have had asthma-esque symptoms as a result. I haven't had any shortness of breath, but did not have this pain, which is the exact same as most of what has been described above, before starting work here. Of course, I was also involved in a car accident where i rolled over and hit my head in March, so who knows, but describing this pain as a life sucker is very accurate, it's horrible. I usually try to put as positive a light as possible on things like this, but I can't find any silver lining to having to deal with this pain which negatively affects every aspect of my life. I just started taking glucosamine and chondroytin, but they apparently take a couple months to kick in, and I just got an orthopedic pillow to sleep on, which may have made some small difference thus far. Good to know I'm not the only one though, best of luck to all.

for the past week i have been having pain between the shoulder blades and it radiates to the upper chest with a heart burn feeling or a feeling like something went down the wrong pipe it is only there for a few minutes and goes away. It feels like a heart attack but it happens about two three times a day and goes away I dont think its a heart attach. It does seem like a digestive problem sometimes I feel like an electrical feeling after about 20min after I eat its like the food is hitting a sensitive spot any ideas would be appreciated. the pain between the shoulder blades are very intense

Hi, I've had the same symptoms you folks were referring to over the years. I am a 43 yr old male in good shape, but episodes of this dysfunction haunt me. Mine is traced to where the thoracic vertebrae meet the cervical vertebtae. It causes tightness in the scalenes which seems to wrap around and cause tightness around the top of the shoulder and around into the armpit, which then pulls the chest muscles to one side, and the sternum is the anchor. This causes rib tightness, breathing problems and at one time, I think it even was the cause of PVCs and abnormal heartbeat from time to time. I was helped by a local massage therapist who specializes in Rolfing and a combination of several other techniques. If you're in Chicago, I'll gladly refer you to him. I'm definitely not cured, but stretching, yoga, etc. will definitely help. Good luck to all of you. YOu're not crazy....the docs just don't have a name for this stuff, and you learn to have to read your own body to tell them what's wrong.

I was in the car about six months ago, turned slightly to the left, and got a sharp searing pain in my ribcage. It immediately gave me a panic attack, and I spent the next three days in rolling panic attacks, unable to get out of bed, fearing the hospital like a mofo. Looking back on it, I think it may have just been gas. That wasnt a joke....And it has a point.
I quit smoking as a result, thinking that I had messed myself up, and needed to get healthy. What followed was the worst two months of my life. I would wake up in the morning dizzy, with chest pain in my sternum. I could pop it just by lifting my arms over my head. My back popped whenever I moved. I too could press on my sternum and pop my back. Whatever this thing is, it seems to have a really strong link with my anxiety. Ive usually been able to control my panic attacks, but whenever I get these pains, my adrenaline goes through the roof, and I feel like im going to freak out and faint. It went away for three months, and came back in my shoulderblade. Ive got a big knot there that my girlfriend will massage for an hour, and it keeps me calm for a day or two. But as soon as that knot returns, im a wreck again.
Guys, dont be afraid to talk about anxiety issues. It obviously plays a part in this somehow. Ive also been looking into fibromayalgia?(spelling?) as a possible diagnosis.
Ive been to the doc, and all they can say is that im mildly arthritic, have some muscle inflammation, and am battling anxiety. I just dont trust that halfassed diagnosis. There has to be something more than that.
Ill be checking this thread for responses, but its nice to know that im not the only one.

I am really wondering what this is. I have pain in the middle of my back between the shoulder blades and pressure in the chest. I have the exact same symptoms where at night it will hurt, in fact its hard to sleep because I lay on my side and the pressure is intense. In the morning I am so sore in my chest, and it is ok during the day alot. sometimes the chest pain feels like strained muscles in the chest.
Has anyone had any success figuring this out??????

Hi, I too have the same problems/very similar. I know of one other person who also has these symptoms - somebody I worked with - we are not alone. I am 25 years old and have had a very stressfull life. I have an IQ of 170 (very high) and have the following habits - smoke 15 filtered roll ups a day (since 15 yrs old) / drink 56 units of beer, mild ale per week (this is twice the safe limit and is equivalent to 28 pints per week (since 15 yrs old) / smoked cannabis regularly, but not in high doses - more like socially, for 3 years, half a joint per evening (strong skunk - wrong crowd). I am 6 feet tall and weigh 9.5 stone (very slight build but this is genetic). I have worked in very stressfull careers - stockbroking/trading, corporate finance and pharmacuetical. I have had to quit university and all jobs due to my condition and nobody has helped - relationships have also been effected and I have become very depressed - housebound. THE SYMPTOMS: Tight chest (in the join at the ribs - front), Clicking back sounds with movement/breathing or popping - these are worse in the mornings and are exagerated by alcahol, feeling as if I am breathing in but no air is getting in - subsequently try to breath deeper and back clicks,

pain in both arms - more like a funny sensation, problems sleeping - wake up with a jaw that feels like no teeth are attached, sweating, feeling that people are aware of me all the time, agrophobia, depression, turn grey with anxiety attacks, feeling as if I cant explain things or that I need to try and explain things that I cant - ie, modern technology - how does it work? need to know how or why all the time, feeling of unreality, lack of concentration, gurgling in my throat (sense that liquid is coming up into throat), trouble swallowing, hyperventillation, hypoventillations etc.. . COPING: The only thing that helps is alcahol, doctors say its just anxiety but I know its leading to heart problems. DOCTORS SOLUTIONS: Physio - DID NOT WORK, Beta blockers - DID NOT WORK, Anti Depressants - DID NOT WORK. MY SOLUTIONS: Do not drink, smoke or drink coffee - these can all trigger attacks. Be assertive, especially with the doctors - I know of a few cases where supposed panic suffers died from heart attacks as wrong diagnosis given, eliminate possibilites by trying remedies such as heat treatment, physio, talking to somebody (panic will dissolve if you tell people your feelings - this eliminates more serious possibilites), mild excercise (swimming, walking), breathing excercises - your GP will be able to help you with these, dont try and do everything at once - relax, talk to GP about medication (AD, BB, tranquilizers will all eliminate more serious possibilities and may help you with dealing with your problems), talk to others, RELAX, eat regulary and healthily at regular intervals - drink plenty of water - GREAT FOR EXPELLING TOXINS (but not too much).

my colleague who also experienced some of the problems I have (above) used to use his swivel chair to click or pop his back - this gives momentary relief but can be unbenificial in the long run. Both me and him are highly strung and ambitious - personality traits obviously linked to this aswell as lifestyle/experiences. I also have to be very neat and tidy and cant stand mess/clutter - this maybe something to do with things. SUMMERY: this could be a serious problem and the anxiety/panic is hiding the real problem - doctors will eliminate this possibility with tests but do push them - they are only human, ask doctors to run test twice if they can, get a chest XRAY, ecg/ekg and bloods, go to a councillor - you may have an underlying issue causing the panic disorder, orphapedics - massage, hot baths/hot water bottles - ABOVE ALL DONT WORRY, YOUR DR WILL HELP YOU RESOLVE WHATEVER THE PROBLEM IS AND TAILOR YOUR SOLUTION TO YOU - DONT LET IT RUIN YOUR LIFE LIKE I DID - YOU HAVE THE STRENGTH TO GET THROUGH THIS - REMEMBER THE BODY IS EXTREMELY COMPLEX WITH LOTS OF PROTECTION MECHANISMS BUT TREAT IT WELL AND IT WILL LAST (I am not a doctor so treat these as just a strangers opinions please - all the best)

I too have suffered for six years from pain behind the should blade during movement, a rib joint (third I think) which pops near my sternum after sitting or bending over, forearm pain and 'hot' arm. It seems like it is worst when I wake up. I am an IT consultant and spend a long time on computers, and also surf around 5 times a week (as I have done since very young). I am 30 years old and really need to get this fixed up as the pain is distracting and I can only use my right arm in limited bursts. I've found that only regular massages will help the tightness and symptoms, and I take pain-killers when the pain becomse bad and the nausea kicks in.

This sort of discomfort can be the result of a number of causes. I have had similar symptoms over the last six months, and I am repeating what doctors and two specialists have said.
The first possibility is one of two variations of acid reflux. If, shortly after eating, undigested food comes back into the esophagus, it brings acid with it that will irritate the lining of the esophagus over time. This will present symptoms such as wind, heartburn, and a constant feeling of pressure behind the breastbone and between the shoulder blades. If the undigested food comes all the way up to the throat, then you will experience a feeling of pressure in that area - as if there is something you have swallowed that won't go down. The lump in the throat and pressure feelings are the way we perceive inflamation caused by the acid in the regurgitated food.
Then there is the hiatal hernia.
Also, prolonged sitting in a hunched posture at the computer or similar for many years can cause musculoskeletal problems with similar symptoms.
It is crucial to visit the doctor and have an endoscopy and related throat examinations to rule out more sinister possibilities.
Many people who have been diagnosed with reflux complain that the medications do not work. That may be because reflux is possibly not the only problem they have. In addition they may have arthritic and/or musculoskeletal problems to contend with.
Looking for knowledge and consolation on the internet is very valuable, but your doctor must be involved, too.

The majority of the posts here seem to indicate problems muscular skeletal in nature. Do some research on thoracic outlet syndrome and see what comes up. I am experiencing a similar range of symptoms (popping clavicle, tightness between the shoulder blades, visual and hearing disturbances, tightness in chest, numbness in left arm), and I believe that is what I have. That assumption may be confirmed when I have my appointment (I found a neurologist that has experience with the syndrome). In the meantime, I have been performing some exercises to alleviate the discomfort in the thoracic region, and it does help -- along with maintaining my stress. I have years of tight muscles to untangle that finally got to me (the Rolfing is helping, too). I need to research the mold angle since we do have some issues regarding our crawl space (which will also be addressed soon).
Hope this helps...

I suffer from the same things! It all started around January of 08. I noticed that my chest was always really sore! ALWAYS.... I dont lift weights or anything... I'm 29...i think im in fairly good health albeit a bit over-weight...but im not that big. I digress. Anyway, I always have a chest pain..sometimes on one side, sometimes under my sternum.... now my back hurts behind my shoulder blades..it radiates.... I just feel like c**p!. I've had a CAT scan, EKGs, echo-cardiograhm (stress test), endocsopy, upper GI with air... the doctors just cannot seem to tell me why im feeling like this. They seem convinced that its anxiety...but the pills they give me dont help! I cant keep going to the ER! Its getting expensive. There has GOT to be a reason why ive been feeling like this for almost a year now!

I HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM..AND THE MAIN THING IS A LOT OF AMERICAN TRAINED DOCTORS DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO OR KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS..IT ALL COMES DOWN TO GAS..YOUR BODY IS CREATING TOO MUCH GAS..THIS PROBLEM MAY COME FROM A THOUSAND REASONS..BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS HEALING IT..PICK A STARTING DAY.AND FAST AND DONT EAT NOTHING THE WHOLE DAY..AND TRY NOT TO DRINK TOO MUCH EITHER..WHEN YOU GET REALLY THIRSTY.TAKE SIPS OF LUKE WARM WATER..JUST ENOUGH TO WET YOUR MOUTH..NOT QUENCH YOU THIRST..THE NEXT DAY START A HEALTY DIET..AND STAY AWAY FROM COLD DRINKS..MILK..AND OTHER FOODS AND LIQUIDS THAT CAUSE GAS..ACUPUNCTURE MAY HELP AS WELL..THE HEALING PROCESS MAY TAKE A FEW MONTHS..BUT MIGHT AS WELL START NOW..HOPE THIS HELPS..

Re: Sharp pain in ribcage
I'm 33 now, F. When I was in high school, I used to get a stabbing pain in my ribcage from time to time. I would really freak out my family because they could tell that every breath I took was like a knife in my rib.
Long story short, after a few of these episodes, it WAS gas. A family member recommended chewing a Gaviscon tablet and from then on, I would just take one when the symptoms hit. I haven't had that happen for MANY many years, but reading your car description I had to let you know that's what it was for me.
As for the popping back, you're on your own there. I REALLY think though its scary when the stabbing pain happens if you can relax and realize its some random air pocket you might prevent some of the other symptoms from coming on?
Good luck.
