June 9th is day #1 of my Tonsillectomy. This procedure was recommended by my doctor more then once over the past year. I have actually scheduled the appointments and cancelled them prior to their dates. Chicken. bock, bock, bock...I chickened out twice already after reading blog sites on the net. This was it, no backing out now. My doctor told me "No More Antibiotics, Get Your Tonsils Out Already". I am no stranger to general anesthesia and have undergone multiple laproscopic surgeries in the past. I have done my homework and stocked the house for success. Ice packs, mylanta, chocolate ensure, applesauce, ritz crackers, benadryl, ice water, water ice, yogurt, and jello. After the procedure they are quick to bring me the first applesauce of many to come. I am supposed to eat the applesauce prior to my discharge from the PACU. NOTE: Do Not Take Pain Meds On An Empty Stomache (especially percocet, take my word for it). No matter how much it hurts to eat something when taking pain meds, it hurts more to have the pain meds come back up. After tolerating the applesauce I was given the green light for discharge. The extent of the pain to come was not worse than what my fear had created in my head. I continude taking percocet every 4-5 hours for the rest of the night. My throat feels pretty sore but my pain is well managed with medicating around the clock. Ice Packs to the neck are fabulous and highly encouraged. I was feeling well enough to have the kids come and visit me while I was resting in bed. Day #1 was the equivalent to bad tonsillitis. Been there and survived.
