Well I would like to share my experience and hopefully put some minds at ease.
Let me start by saying that I am a 32 year old male. I was having some neck pains, ear pains, headaches etc. The headaches I suffered from for years. My family doctor couldn't figure out what was going on. Then I noticed that one of my tonsils was enlarged (after having strept throat a couple of times in one year). My family doctor just wanted to give me antibiotics. I got tired of those and decided to see an ENT. Well that shined a new light on everything. When I went to the ENT he found that I need to have my tonsils taken out and that I had a deaviated septum (that is where my headaches had been coming from). I read blog about tonsilectomy's and was very discouraged when I read about the pain, so I canceled. Then changed my mind and rescheduled. So on 12-3-08 I went in for a tonsillectomy and a septoplasty.

They kept me over night in the hospital. My throat was a little sore, but I didn't need to keep hitting that button for the morephene. I didn't eat anything, just drank all I could and slept. The doctor discharged me with Codeine and an antibiotic. I came home and I really wasn't in much pain. But I took the codeine every 4 hours needed or not, just so it was in my system. By day 4 I wasn't taking much of the codeine and had not had any horriffic pains. By day 5 I was eating and had smoked a cigarette. I am now at day 8, almost no codeine (just when I wake up in the morning). Very mild sore throat. I am eating mostly anything that I want and am still have a few cigs a day. But I never had any of the horrifying pains that I had read about.
But here is my take on the pain thing. I think some of it is the pain tolerance of the person. Part of it is how good the doctor is at his/her job and if they are worried about your comfort instead of the money. Then there is the part of how are you at taking meds that you need on time and keeping hydrated. DRINK LOTS OF WATER AND LIQUIDS TO KEEP HYDRATED!!!!!!!!!!
The only real pain I had threw this, was when I tried eating Ice Cream. I almost hit the floor on that one. But once I got all of it out of my mouth and drank a little tea I was fine. So in my opinion, STAY AWAY FROM ICE CREAM. Maybe dairy all together.

Don't get me wrong, recovering from a tonsillectomy is not an easy road. There is some pain to it. But if I had to do it again. I would have not canceled the first time. I would do ASAP in a heart beat.

Septoplasty was successful not much add discomfort would do that again to. I am not sleeping better and with both things done. Not only am I sleeping better. But I am not having any of the symptoms I was having and I actually feel like I human again and enjoying the time with my family.

I hope I have help some people put the minds at ease. Good luck to you who are going to have it done. It is not an easy road, but the results are well worth it.
