Okay so this is day three after surgery. I had surgery on Monday. All I want to do is cry. I am in so much pain and so surprised. The first two days were not that bad. I was eating well and now I can barely get water down let alone any food. I am managing to make myself get it down though. My tongue feels so swelled up and I feel like the back of my throat is so swollen that it is closing in on me. I hope the pain does not get any worse for tomorrow. It has gradually gotten worse day by day and I am praying that it doesnt get worse tomorrow. Any thoughts? I wish I had some kind of rinse to rinse my mouth out. I think that might help. I have considered brushing my teeth but am afraid of what the outcome will be. I am not sure what else I can do to make the pain subside besides eating, drinking and keeping my meds in. Goodluck to anyone else dealing with this. Please keep in touch. It helps to have someone to reach out to and discuss the same things going on with one another.

I'm on day 11 as well. About day 4 i got 2 peas stuck in the whole where my right tonscil used to be,mad rush to the after hour clinic and got them out. My advise do not eat lumpy food or peas. I have devloped a cold and am coughing and gagging most of the night, it has set me back a couple of days. When will this nightmare be over?

Hello,  I am 50 y/o had tonsillectomy 2 months ago.  Wound healed nicely, at least that's what I thought until after I have noticed after a month post op that I feel like there is a lump in the right side of my old tonsil.  It feels like there is a stone there but I cannot see it.  I can only feel it especially when I swallow liquid or solid it does not matter.  It makes me gag, and cough.  Also I feel ear fullness and at times some mild ringing on that side of my ear  (right side).  It is really bothersome, and I cannot see my ENT dr until next week for he is booked up.  I hope this is nothing, just keeping my faith and praying a lot.  Just want to share it to see if some one out there had some experienced related to this, and hoping to get some info.  on what to do and not what to do.

thanks

Actually, for the majority of cases, eating solid foods in the first week after the op can increase your risk of haemorraging, so i wouldnt reccommend it to others at all.

Tifanny - this made me laugh. I read your first "positive" post the morning after surgery. I'm on day 14 and I chuckled wondering how the rest went for you. Was glad to see you posted 3 days later and with honesty. This is just one of the most painful recoveries out there. I'm still not back on normal foods and still taking Vicodin. So ready for the nagging throat and ear pain to be gone. :)

Hi I'm 44 and on day 5 post tonsillectomy. I heard all the horror stories and for the most part, are all true. Day 1 was no big deal. Day 2 the pain was worse and I couldn't sleep as just as I drifted off, I would startle awake with c**p running down the back of my throat. Day 3 I slept sitting up on and off all day. Day 4 the pain was terrible, barely relieved by the Lortab 7.5/500 q 4-6 hrs. Today, I got up, dressed and was able to go 6 hours between doses. I'm back in bed but the pain is less for the first time since surgery.

I really thank you for this information, I am post op day 5 and I feel like I am about to die and I am almost ready to give up. I was just wondering if I am being a big baby but this is very traumatic for an adult.

Your post has been so helpful to me, thank you so much! I just had my surgery earlier today an I am in so much pain! I just hate to think its going to get even worse. My doctor only gave me Tylenol 3 an some phenagren. I know it's been over a year ago for you but I'm sure you haven't forgotten the pain u had. I just wanna know, should I ask my doctor for a different pain med or what. I do have some ultramanarcotic from a knee injury I had awhile ago, could I take to too? Thanks again!

Yes, you need to be on something stronger like Hyrdocodon and take it every 4 hours (though the dose will say every 4-6 hours). Worst thing is lapsing on pain meds. Based on the pain I was in, I don't know how anyone could do it with less. I really don't say this to scare you, you're past the anxiety of the surgery. One day 3 or 4 it does get worse. Drink, drink, drink water. every hour drink an 8oz glass. Trust me on this. Any dehydration will slow the healing process. It hurts to swallow but is worth it. Lots of popsicles too! Seriously, set an alarm and wake yourself every hour to do this. You'll be sleep deprived for a bit but sleeping a few hours is not worth the pain that follows because you missed your meds or didn't have fluids. And crush pills up in water - much easier to take. It took me 10 - 12 days to get through the serious pain. But every time you think you can't take it anymore, you do. You'll be fine. We've all been there. Cry if you have too, I did. But it hurts too. Another thing if you can, get a heating pad or bean bag to heat in the microwave to soothe the ear pain. Yes, you will feel like you have a terrible earache in a few days. The heat really does help. I wish I could tell you differently, but if you've read through all these posts like I did, you'll see we're all pretty much telling the same story. You can do this!! I had mine done in late February...and the two times I've gotten a cold since it's passed right by in a day rather than giving me strep. It's worth it. I know it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel but it's there and then you'll be able to share your experience and motivate someone else. Good luck hun!

Hello everyone, I have been reading through all the posts about tonsilectomy's - I am having mine this Sat - the 22nd! I am scared, and anxious, however I was admitted to hosp about 2 months ago with acute tonsilitis, and the pain was the worst pain i've ever had, I couldn't swallow my own saliva, and had a temp of 40 degrees. I ended up staying in for 3 days with a canula so that I could have a fluids and meds as I couldn't bare the pain of swallowing. I am hoping that although this will be a painful procedure, it won't be as bad as that! I have found everyone's blogs really helpful. Some things I expected, but others such as ear ringing (which I get anyway) earache, and the dangly bit in the middle being swollen I didn't realise. Oh dear, I am hoping my recovery will be ok :/

It will probably be as bad or worse. Not trying to scare you, just prepare you. I also had some severe tonsillitis that I didn't think could hurt worse, then I had the tonsillectomy. BUT, you will get through it and you will never deal with the pain or get sick again. I haven't been sick once since my surgery. The most critical thing you can do is drink fluids, eat Popsicles. Every hour. You will be exhausted from being up but you will heal faster. And crush your pills up and dissolve them in water...no need to try to swallow them. This is one of those things....just when you think you can't take it anymore, you start upwards. You got this!!! :)

Thanks for your reply, I am going to expect the worst, and deal with it with my pain killer, and all of the tips from you guys. I guess I am just scared of my pain threshold, but as you say, I have had to deal with a severe case of tonsilitis, and NEVER want to go through it again, but I did get through it, so I will ge through this. Did you stay over night? I have to be in the hosp at 7.30am.
