Hello! I always thought that transfusion was life saving and didn’t know that things could go wrong during blood transfusion until my friend’s grandfather died. Can you tell me more about the problems that could occur after a blood transfusion? I would really like to know. Thanks for your help

Yes, it is true that certain complications could occur although they don’t happen too often and in most cases blood transfusion is life saving. Some of the complications that could occur are febrile reactions in which a patient would develop increase in temperature, chills and possibly back pain and headaches. They could develop hemolytic anemia which occurs as a result of an abnormal breakdown of red blood cells in the blood vessels or elsewhere in the body. It needs to be treated. Certain allergic reactions could develop, which actually represent immune reactions to the donor’s blood. A patient may develop alloimunity, which is different from autoimmunity. In alloimunity, a patient’s body develops immunity against its own cells. There could be fluid overload, infections, etc.
Just a few hours after blood transfusion, lung injury may occur followed by pulmonary edema. There could be a few others but I reckon you got the overall picture.
