My daughter has type 1 diabetes since she was 13, she is now 17. She has had a constant battle with her weight (20 lbs) for the last 2 years and I don't know what else to suggest to her. So I am posting on this forum, that maybe someone will have some suggestions.
Okay here are some details:
She is 5'3" and 150lb. Novolog (1:8 carb ratio) Lantus (33 units) Symlin (10 units)
For the last year she has been doing everything she is supposed to be doing but still can't loose this 20 lbs. We have been to dieticans, her ednocroligist, she has been working out. Very frustrating for her. and on top of it, her endo Dr always brings up the 20 lbs which makes her upset because she doesn't know what else she should be doing. At the last Dr. appointment in Sept. we brought a journal of everything she has eaten and her daily exercise, to prove that she is doing everything. I don't know any other 17 year olds that journal all their food and will give up going out with friends to go to the gym.
She is on a 1500 cal diet, and over the summer she was going to the gym pretty much every day. Unforetunatly, since school started back up she hasn't been able to go to the gym as often, but she does get in exercise about 4 x's a week.
At her last Dr. appointment in Sept, they started her on Symlin. Which is supposed to make her less hungry. and have her give herself less insulin. needless to say, I don't think it is doing anything, because she is back to the same amount of insulin before she started the symlin.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would just like to post a bit of support for you and your daughter. I don't really have any solutions but I do want to say that she's obviously very brave and I wish you both the best of luck. Let us know how she's doing and keep us updated, okay??

I have a very similar situation with my daughter who has type one diabetes. I, also, have taken her to many different "specialists" to determine why she is overweight even though she is very active and doesn't seem to overeat. It is so difficult. It felt good to read that someone else was facing the same challenge. I hope your daughter has found a way to deal with her weight.
