I had a stent removed from my left ureter today. I didn't know what to expect after seeing a wide variety of replies here and was a little bit freaked out, so I took 2 vicodin about a half hour before I went to the doctor's office. Here is my experience. They injected lidacaine into the tip of my penis. The nurse said if it doesn't run out of the penis, that is a good sign. I read other posts that said they had a lot of pain even with the anesthetic because it didn't numb the whole urethra. Gee, I wonder why... do they think the anesthetic is just going to run down into the urethra on its own when it takes the pressure of a syringe to get it in there? So after she left the room, I clamped the tip of my penis closed with my right hand and then used my left hand to slowly stroke the anesthetic as far down my urethra as I could, trying to get it into the prostate area. By that time my fingers were pretty close to my anus. But you know where the prostate so I stroked as far as I could. Well, when the doc inserted the scope, I didn't feel anything at first. There were a couple of rough spots where I had enough pain to make me groan but it only lasted a couple seconds each time - one of those spots was when it passed through the prostate. Then he was able to latch onto the stent within probably 15 seconds. As he pulled it out I felt another few seconds of pain enough to make me groan, but again very brief. The pain level was probably 6-7 out of 10 but again for very brief periods. The whole ordeal was over in less than a minute. I had burning in my penis afterwards, and burning when I urinated the first time, but nothing like after surgery, and there was no blood in my urine. Overall, it was not nearly as painful as I expected, but it was not something I would like to repeat. Hpe this is helpful.

Ok i had my kidney stone removed and a stent put in on Monday. It's Wednesday now and I can barely walk and have to pee every 5 seconds and it burns like a sob. I get it removed on Monday and I don't think I can wait that long. I by no means am a wimp. I can endure pain better then most and I don't know what's worse right now the stone or the stint.

I had lithotropsy done on 3/5/2012 for my kidney stone and doc put stent inside...he said it will be removed after a week my question is cn i drive bike meanwhile...with stent inside

I had the same thing happen. it took them (3) weeks of excruciating pain to find out my ureter had kinked when they took the stent out. Went back and put a large stent in and am again in excruciating pain. I am on my 8th antibiotic and did another urine culture and only urinating thick red blood. I still have 3 weeks before removal. I have had stents in previously several times, but never have I experienced anything like this. I call the urologist every couple of days and he says he can't figure was is going on with that kidney but the stent must stay in. Percocet does not even releave the pain. I think i am going to have to go to the er and see if I can get any releif. Good luck to you.

Cant believe some of these replies, I have had 4 stents removed without any anaesthetic, its uncomfortable at worst no pain though , six ops and have a stent in at the moment, I hate having them in but if removal hurts something is wrong...

I am 17 years old. and i was born with a kink in my urinary line. so they put a stent in my left kidney to the bladder to release the pain ive been havein. (at first i thought it was a kidney stone) but it was different. so now ive have a stent in me. it's suppose to let my left kidney heal from all the blockage that was there. doctor said if i have 5% damage to my kidney there going to take it out. but im going for test soon to see how my kidney is doing, and we go off from there. and my next official surgery date is aug 22...

Dont get too anxious about it.....Stent removal is a very simple, quick and painless process......It depends on doctor too......I got it removed yesterday. After getting the equipment ready, it hardly took 40-50 seconds......I was actually seeing everything on the screen.....:)

I had to remove my own. Wasn't comfortable. Found it easier to lay in a warm/hot bath to relax muscles and as pulled string wrap a little bit around finger was easier then it sliding back. Still some discomfort but wasn't as bad as expected. Looking forward to beig back to normal lol

Had jj stents on both sides following a Ureteroscopy and Laser Lithotripsy . Did cause some discomfort but was easily managed with pain meds expect for when i'd piss. First 2 days after surgery peeing cause severe pain and the meds did little to control it. Thankfully this pain only last few seconds at a time so was'nt a huge deal. Was time to remove the stents 6 days latter. Tried to do it with in office procedure using local anesthesia. Was pure hell never felt anything like that pain wise and i've passed several kidney stones previously. They tried it again this time putting me on oxycodone and valium, seemed to be actually worse! Had to reschedule procedure at hospital where i was placed under anesthesia. Only way the pain could be managed, urologist did say this was'nt usual for most people but it does happen in rare cases to where a person has more than normal sensitivity in that area and they HAVE to be put under for stent removal.

I am having the same problem but found that azo over the counter helps so much, and it helps with the spasms, and I slept all night, I could not bare the fact as long as you to keep in.

I had mine taken out today.. overall it was pain free.. however.. the goop that was inserted (numbing agent) .. globbed up an created severe pain later in the day when I was triedto relieve myself.. 12 hours later.. the last gloop passed and the pain almost dissapeared completely..

I just had my second stent removed, first one not knocked out for. I was petrified, losing sleep and visibly shaking this morning in the office. I don't handle pain well and this whole experience has been crazy (large stones in both kidneys, 3 surgeries total and 2 stents).
I took a pain pill and 2 Aleve an hour or so before my appt. In the room I was literally crying, tears streaming down my face in fear.
They first applied the lidocaine and after a few minutes my doctor came in and started by inserting the scope into place. He told me the reason it can be painful is bc your reflexes tense up and cause the bladder to spasm so he gave me specific directions for how to breathe when. It only burned a teeny amount as I took my 5 second breath in. After that I got to watch on the screen as they use these little clamps to grab the end of the stent (0 sensation during this part). And then more breathing while he slowly pulled it out on a long breath in. There was burning for the first few seconds and then after that nothing for the last 2/3 of the pulling the rest of the way out. I was elated when I saw that thing was out of my body. :)
So that's my story. My best advice is have a great experienced doctor if possible, try not to worry if you can but if you can't you can't, take a pain pill + Aleve if you can get a ride to and from the appt, and really focus on your breathing and take nice deep slow yogic breathing style breaths when they tell you to. It will be over before you know it!
So far I have had no cramping pain and its been about 2 hours since I left the doctor. I took 1 more pain pill in the car on the way home just in case but so far so good. I believe the Aleve might have stopped the residual spasms from happening.
