I recently started my period and I had discharged vaginal tissue that was about 4 inches long. It was white and looked like raw chicken skin.. white on the outside a little layer of fat in the middle and then pinkish on the inside. It was not bloody or anything it almost appeared clean except on the end where there was a small string of blood. I am on the birth control "patch" and have never had anything like this before in the 2years I have been on it. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be?

Did you consult your doctor before you decided to use the birth control patch? Did you run some tests on your liver capability to detoxify the toxins from artificial hormones?

This contraceptive could be a cause of your problem. What was your period like besides that vaginal clot? I have never heard of anything similar though but I think that the hormones could have caused it.
Artificial progesterone could have influenced your cervix to produce more white discharge and even poisoned your nerves, liver, uterus and cervix.
This is possible especially because more hormones are delivered to the blood stream by patch than by regular bc pills.

I am no doc and I am not applying that this was your case, but I know that these hormones can make a real mess and I would have it checked if I were you.

Let mo know what your gyno told you!

You could have had a miscarriage. Did you have unusually bad cramps or heavy bleeding? This happened to me once before after I had been on the pill for 3 years. Luckily (due to the fact that both my parents are doctors) I knew to keep the tissue sample and took it to my gynecologist (gross, I know). Testing proved it to be a miscarried fetus. My gyno told me that it's very common for women to miscarry, so don't be afraid that this episode might affect your ability to have children. She also cautioned me to keep any kind of large form of tissue that is discharged so it could be tested, as it might indicate a problem. Hope this helps you out!

This happened to me too the other day. I'm on the pill and I started to bleed without stopping the pill, then the following day I discharged a big lump of tissue. ( same as you described ) My doctor said she didn't need to test the tissue, but instead did a blood test to see if i was pregnant.
The result was negative but she said I still would have fertilised an egg and because I was on antibiotics at the time due to the flu, that it was it didn't carry. So it was obviously very early as it was a low reading.
It was scary, so anytime something unusual happens to your body, see your doctor immediatly!!

This has happened to me 3x in the past year. It's not always a miscarraige. The first time this happened to me was about 7 years ago and I had been 2 weeks late with a LOT of cramping. I went to the Dr. after the tissue discharge and she told me I had a miscarriage. I was very depressed about this, and it actually ended my then-relationship. It didn't happen again, and I had been quite regular menstruation wise, until about 4 years ago it happened one time, the late period with horrible cramping. When I finally did get my period - big wads of tissue discharge. But, I was out of the country and could not see a regular doctor. Last September I had this problem yet again, but saw a doctor and had an ultrasound and bloodwork done at that time. I was not pregnant, but instead had a 3cm cyst on my left ovary - where the worst cramping always was. I started looking back at my history and realized that every 4 months I would have roughly the same symptoms. HOrrible cramping, and always on the left side predominantly. If I got my period at a normal time, there was no tissue discharge, but if I was late (which has only happened maybe 4 or 5 times in the last 7 years or so), there would always be tissue discharge. When I finally got a period after the ultrasound, it was already 2 weeks late. The amount of tissue discharged was amazing and sickening. I went back to the Dr. who told me this was the cyst. Sometimes cysts dissolve and are absorbed back into your body, and sometimes they burst and are expelled. This one burst. She thinks that most likely the "miscarriage" I had 7 years ago was also a burst cyst. Now, I can keep track of my cycle, and I know when I have a cyst. It is like clockwork. I get my period every 31 days on the money, except every 4th month when I get it 2 weeks late, accompanied with cramping on the left side. Sometimes there's a little cramping, sometimes there's a lot. And sometimes I have tissue discharge afterwards and sometimes I don't. It's annoying, but it's not dangerous. And it's not a miscarraige. At least for me. I encourage everyone to see their doctor, but don't immediately get depressed about a possible miscarriage. It could just be a cyst. And trust me, after 7 years of thinking I had been pregnant, to find out that I wasn't, I was more angry than upset. just relax and call your doctor. Heat compresses and ibuprofen work in the meantime. What works for me is doing stretches and keeping active, even though I might be in pain. And drink LOTS of water! I also take calcium pills (because I am lactose intollerant), and this seems to lessen the cramping. Good luck, all!

I also had two large pieces of tissue of similar make up pass this week while on my period. The ends appeared to have a blood clot like ball and the rest was a pale tissue w/what looked like blood vessels (small red lines). They were both about 2 inches long and 1 inch wide. I am wondering if I could I have caused a miscarriage by getting back on the pill? I was off for a couple of weeks, but didn't have sex until the day I started back on the pill.

Same here, tissue, appearance same as described by others, size- 1 inch by 4 inches. [I had not been aware at the time that I was 'pregnant' and news of a miscarriage at 9 weeks had been a shock, being on the pill etc!!! ] I took it to the doctor as it didn’t look like what I imagined a miscarriage to look like, -it looked what I would describe, as a piece of me. He said he was confident that it *was* a miscarriage, especially with the dates we looked up, and so sent it off to be tested to ensure it was complete, else an ultrasound and d+c would be required.

So when the results got back that it was *not* a miscarriage, despite the doctor's confidence at the time that it *was*, it was unsettling again! he apologised, which was really nice, and the name it [the tissue] was given was something like an:
"endometrial progestogen effect", which means some tissue the uterus produced, some extra lining, as a result of progesterone activity, too much activity... but I am not entirely clear now having read these blogs, whether a cyst, or something else might have occurred... as no ultrasound was deemed necessary. It may or may not have been anything to do with the artificial hormones [the pill] or my own, as i was only on it for 2 months and apparently this is a reported side effect for women who've been on the pill for a long time. So the cause was frustratingly, unknown.

It’s bad enough having monthly cramps that make me need time off work, but the pain I went through immediately before passing that tissue, was horrendous, I was going to ring an ambulance it was that bad. But once the worst was over, probably about 45 minutes, I was able to function again and was glad that I hadn’t called an ambulance! And now since then, I feel foolish for having thought it was a miscarriage- much like the lady above reported, that for 7 years she had thought that was the case [because both doctors concerned confirmed it!!!], in my case it was only 7 days, which was bad enough.

I guess the docs don’t know everything, they don’t have all your information- even if they do they don’t have time to read it all through and make all possible connections, and can’t do thorough checks on everyone, so it’s likely they can miss things, as what happened in that lady's case, and in my case, a premature [false positive] diagnosis of miscarriage... I had a pregnancy test 5 days later- but not at the time- which would have been helpful as the pregnancy hormones would have still been present if it had indeed been a miscarriage, which would have saved me the week of beating myself up. but after 5 days since a miscarriage, those hormones leave your body, so it being negative just let the doctor be assured I was not 'still' pregnant before issuing antibiotics to treat persistent symptoms that were in accordance with possibly having an infection. He gave me them as he couldn’t prove I had or did not have an infection, and apparently infections after miscarriage can be very serious if untreated, hence it is better to treat one that is not there than wait for one that is there in early stages to worsen.

So yes. I am still making sense of all the upheavals in attributing my 'symptoms' during the 9 weeks in the lead up to the tissue-passing, at first to 'period' pains, and much bigger boobs cause of the pill [it was a new pill-type for me]- then they were 'pregnancy' pains, and boobs were bigger for obvious reasons, and now, the pains are attributed to the growing of additional tissue in the uterus.... and the boobs, well, it must have been the pill! 'Marvelon' is its name for those who want to know! One more thing, my doc told me having had these results back from histopathology (sp?), that there was nothing to worry about and that it was just one of those things that nature throws at you. He had never come across this before- it is not a common thing to happen apparently, and he had never seen such tissue 'of that calibre' before.

I hope this can help in some way. Despite experiencing doctors’ fallible expertise in this case, I still recommend getting advice from the gp asap, and definitely taking it with you to have it tested, to put your mind at ease. In the meantime, just don’t go imagining or worrying before any test results are back like I did or you might grieve for a non-existent miscarriage for example, and feel all confused!

Anyway- it was hugely reassuring for me to read other women’s' accounts of such things, even if i found this particular blog after the test results, so I hope this can help someone too. All the best!

I have had similar experiences! I went to the doctor the first time it happened and he told me it was not a miscarriage (which is what i believed it to be despite the extreme safe sex i have). He stated for a piece of tissue to be as large as it was it would have defining features of a fetus, or some recognizable characteristics. He also told me that it was probably a side effect of the pill (i was not able to bring the discharge with me). It is reassuring that there are more people who go through this the once in a blue moon it happens!!

i had a similar experience.  A couple of years ago i had passed a large piece of flesh colored tissue 3 days after i started taking  a progerterone pill called provera. I saved it and took it to my doc who said it was definately fetal tissue. He said i had miscarried. He sent the tissue to the lab but when the results came back they said it was endometrial tissue not fetal tissue.

Well this definetly makes me feel better knowing other women have went through this. I just recently got o,n the shot a month and a half ago for the first time and the doctor had informed me that I may have a slight period or nothing at all. After hearing this when I got a slight period about 5 days ago I didn't think anything of it. As my period progressed it started getting heavier and more painful. The cramps were unusually painful and after putting a tampon in I noticed it was extremely uncomfortable and changed to a pad. 15 minutes after this is when I discovered the tissue, At first I was thinking maybe a heavy blood clot but thought otherwise when I saw it was more of a tissue like substance and half of it was a white or opaque color. I thought back of when my sister described her miscarriage and I couldnt get this thought out of my head. I gave her a call and she told me I should go and get a pregnancy test because I would still have the hormones in my system to see if it was infact a miscarriage. I ran and got one after 2 hrs of this had happen and the test came back negative. Which sadden me because...if it was a miscarriage atleast I knew what was wrong with me being its Friday after the doctors office closed and sortof embarrassed to go to the emergency room to investigate further. But hearing everyones story atleast I know I'm not the only one who has had this happen to and it gives me the comfort to make it to Monday when the doctor reopens. And on the plus side after the tissue coming out, the pains have slimed down and I'm able to move around more,

Hi

I have experienced the same thing and I'm so pleased to hear that it is a common problem. Why don't the doctors know more about this? Now I have to just put up with it! I have had tests and nothing can be done.
