I've a medical background ( biomedical engineer ) what I'm suggesting you is a food supplement and causes no harms , try to give your husband Alpha Lipoic Acid ( Fatty acid , like fish oil , flax seed oil ... ) aong with L-carnitine ( amino acid ) .
it won't hurt liver even in a long run ( but better off to give breaks in between ) , hope he gets well .
