ive suffered from depersonalization/derealization disorder for 2yrs now and have had the lines, more clearly when my eyes are closed ever since. i also feel a weird muscle sensation in the back of my right eye, straining. with this disorder and my symptoms its hard for me to feel the stress or depression its based from, cause the disorder is a protection. but i believe the lines are from stress or just some sort of eye muscle dysfunction

I have actually been to the optometrist today with the same sort of symptom. but what started as a black dot occaisionally is now a vertical floating line in my right eye only. I have been told after a thorough exam that some of the gel in and around the retina has dropped and this is what I am seeing in my line of sight... and yes it is the warning signs of possible retina detachment. I have been advised not to do any sudden jerking head movements because this can make the problem worse and significantly increase the possibility of retina problems. It needs to be closely monitored and if it gets worse seek attention IMMEDIATLEY.

Actually it sounds like a Aura Migraine which is a vascular spasm in your optic cord. Medical science is growing on the subject but still very little is known about it. I have had "vesospasm" on my retina(causing partial blindness outside of the macular) my retinal pathologist didn't know how or why it happened as I am in perfect health.
I was rigorously tested and nothing was found (to my doctors sever disappointment)

Ive studied alot of medical journals in my free time and discovered stress is a huge factor and caffeine! caffeine can cause the disruption of Magnesium. With a magnesium deficiency in your body you will have vascular spasms (also known as migraines) but they can happen anywhere in your body. This is where medical science kind of trails off into new territory. There has been journals of magnesium injections that instantly stopped the spasms but I can't verify them.
Try to take elemental magnesium or magnesium citrate (almost impossible to overdose on the stuff) and see if there is a result. Also chill out :)

I'm so glad other people suffer from this but I'd really like to know what causes it

Hi,

I have had these exact same issues, the wavy lines in vision only for a moth or so, although I have had floaters for well over a year...I post because I have spent many restless nights seeking reassurance online and through doctors ect, and hate the dark dread I feel when i am unsure of things..... I am hoping I may provide reassurance to at least someone, so hear goes....

I have had all the scans,
many eye tests and constant reassurance  from the doc.....
My doctor even once told me I may be more of a danger to my mental mind then anything physical!

To cut it short, I think a lot of what I  am experiencing is fear, anxiety and a bit plain old hypercondria....you would be sooo surprised what the body thinks is real given a little fear and adrenaline.....

I have tried to relax a bit and...lo and behold things do get better, the brain starts to ignore the floaters and I look forward to things...its not all bad ;) by any means....

So there is hope, be aware that u can become comsumed in your fear, and remember there IS a way out, u just have to want to see it x

much love  and a happy recovery xxx

I get them on my peripheral vision. They last for 15 to 20 minutes.

wonder if this is really an eye problem or a brain problem. It'd be nice to go to the right doctor instead of having to go to one just to be told to go to another and then another. I am seeing the wavy lines and think maybe others might give me an idea on the best way to proceed. I noticed that if I close each eye one at a time the wavy lines are still there. This leads me to believe that maybe it's not an issue with my eyes, so a trip to an eye doctor would be a waste of money. The posts have suggested other things like migraine and depression and stress. Sounds more on target. If I were like you and first went to an eye doctor I probably would have wasted money on a worthless visit. Would you like me to suggest some professional help for your problem?

Well because not everyone can run to a doctor they cannot afford every time something strange occurs with their body. Many times it could be from something you ate, being over tired or too much stress and it goes away in a day. If these things occur more than day or two then I would go to a doctor. If the symptoms indicate a semi-innocuous problem I may wait it out. On the other hand if the symptoms are showing an explosive aneurysm I will to the doctor post haste. Do you understand now?

I recently saw rows of half circles in my left eye only on the bottom half of my eye.

~~~~~ similiar
This would occur after I woke from in a startle and then went away. I noted it right away because it was so odd. This was several days after I was discharged from the hospital when my ankle broke. On one occassion I saw a straight plaid like paterrn of lines only in the center of the same eye wth twitching. I had experienced trauma.
