I'm a member of ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed ...we have THOUSANDS of pple on this site, sharing experience...even a lot of Cold Turkey quitters experienced weight gain, so I dont think its Chantix---tho I quit, by taking it, for almost SIX months...my weight gain started in 70 days into my quit, and continued into the next year...recently put on another 5 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas, typical for me
I total 30 pounds gained since I quit 3 yrs ago...from what Quitnet counselors say, 1 pack of smokes=50pounds of overweightness on cardiovascular system, so I m WAY ahead in the game here...back when I smoked it was more like 2, almost 3 packs a day,,,tho skinny back then, I was slowly killing myself..I could tell..my allergies, colds were REALLY bad, and night-time wheezing, not to mention the expense of 2-3 packs a day at back THEN was 3.50 a pack...I couldnt afford to smoke...not at 5.45 a pack now

Members of the Nicotine Addiction group- I can relate to the weight gain and the causes are many. First, keep in mind that you have artificially stimulated your metabolism for however many years you have been smoking. Therefore, going off of the nicotine means that the body has to learn how to be efficient in it's metabolism of all nutrients now-- good and bad. Second, while coming off of an oral fixation, it is common to develop another oral satisfaction- eating being primary. Those of you that are walking or keeping a steady stress on your metabolism will likely start to see a change in the 6 to 9 month period of time. Please keep in mind you may need to exercise different- not necessarily more. Muscle confusion and interval training will help boost your metabolism. Please be patient with your bodies.... you are coming off of an extreme stimulant with highly addictive properties. It's safe to say you are detoxifying for the first 6 mos to a year after your last cigarrette. Keep trying and remember to try something new in terms of activity. DO NOT STARVE yourself!! You will only slow your metabolism down worse.

Wow,you hit the nail right on the head with your answer/advice.Its the whole "habit" thing that's the key.I bet if you put a piece of paper in the Kitchen and add a check each time you go in their, you will be suprised.
I just found myself headed for the fridg.more times than normal.I felt hungry cause I new it gave me something to do.Since I started going for a short walk with my dog.It was both good for him and for me too.Its a pain in the ass at first but after a week or its easier just to say "no"to even getting up,if watching the tube.
Also;buy a few Puzzles,Puzzle mags and word search tablets.Try to have a few things going at the same time so its not so easy to blow doing something off.
Drink or push water, the more you drink the less you want to eat.
Hope this helps,
God bless!

I quit smoking in May on Chantix. I have cut my calorie intake to 1200/day and I run 6 miles EVERY day. I have gained 10 lbs, and I am feeling no relief from this outrageous weight gain. I am an obsessively active person, but I have had nothing but problems since I quit smoking. I have never felt worse in my life. So, in response, an hour of cardio everyday will NOT fix your metabolism.

Ok, but if the calories don't ever come out.. as in severe constipation, what to do? I run everyday, reduced my calorie intake drastically, my counter even sends me warnings that Im not taking in enough. But, I'm backed up everyday. Since I'm not subbing food for cigs, should I sub laxatives instead? I don't feel the trade off or quitting smoking to be fat is a good one. I'd rather smoke-taboo or not.

Well I was l40 when I had my heart attack and was pretty much forced to quit while in the hospital. Now weigh 260 so that's a gain of 120 pounds -almost doubled myself. My lungs are healthy but the weight bothers my back and knees and my ability to walk-especially up hill. Wanted to become a spokesperson for Chantix but could not cover up the HORRENDOUS weight gain. Lost my self esteem and my body is downright UGLY. Work hard to take off 5 pounds to gain back 7. It sucks.

The side effect of Hypothyroidism can make you gain weight and you don't have to be eating excessively to do it. I learned the hard way. I tried to convince my Dr for a year that I was dieting and exercising and constantly gaining. Finally when he was out of the office and I saw his partner, a blood test was done and it came back I have hypothyroidism, one of the less talked about side effects of Chantix. I started taking Chantix at 130 lbs and got to 184.5 before they did the tests. If you are working at losing weight and it isn't happening after taking Chantix, insist your Dr check it out.

I thought I would reopen this discussion as it looks to have taken place over a year ago. I also recently started taking Chantix. I began exercising again when I started cutting back on cigs (I've been a total slug-a-bug for the past year) and have been watching my calories. For example, the number of calories it takes to run my body is about 2100/day. One day last week I ate 1550 calories, burned 250 with exercise, and gained a pound. ??? Last night in frustration, I came across this thread seeing that I wasn't the only one. I feel pretty good about quitting, so I'm also coming off the Chantix (though have given myself permission to take a pill if I feel I need it - quitting is most important!). So the $64,000 question is....for those of you who also gained weight on Chantix, did the weight come back off after you stopped using the medication? If so, how long did it take for things to go back to normal??

I have been on the Chantix since the first of this year (2012). Worked magnificently to stop my smoking, but have gained 10 pounds so far regardless of diet. I had only been taking the one pill in the morning due to sleep difficulties when I took both pills.
I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes a year ago. Through diet alone I lowered my A1C from 7.5 to 5.7, so I know I eat healthy! I was also already hypothyroid and the doctor had to increase my medication amount last week. Quitting smoking is great, but the weight gain is unacceptable since I was already overweight (size 14). I fit in none of my clothes; it's difficult to be inspired to exercise when everything jiggles and my exercise bottoms fit in a most unappealing manner. After reading all of this, tomorrow I will start weaning myself off the Chantix; 1/2 pill in the morning for a week, then none. If the nicotine craving come back I will ask my doctor for a script for Wellbutrin SR.
I agree with others, they say smoking kills...but so do health issues arising from obesity. I used to cycle 15+ miles each day even though I smoked, but won't now due to how I look in lycra. Have started walking a little over 2 miles each day which is difficult due to back issues, so hopefully this will help.

I have been smoke free for a year now and also used chantix. It was the same for me that as soon as I stopped chantix I gained a bunch of weight. Fast and furiously, as in 30 pounds in about 2 weeks. I know this is not normal stop smoking weight and has to be related to the chantix. I have been dieting and excersing now for 10 months and the weight will not budge. It is a total of 50 extra pounds that I have around my mid section. I have named it the chantix fat suit. I currently take water pills just to help with some of the water retention but the second I don't take anything I swell even more.
Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? If I had known that this was going to happen I would have chosen a different type of stop smoking drug. Help PLEASE

The Chantix is not the reason everyone is gaining weight. The truth is that smoking increases your metabolism and when you quit your metabolism slows down. It is natural to gain 10-15% of your body weight. However, in time it will come off with proper excercise and good eating habits. Smoking is the worst possible thing you can do to your body! Stick with the Chantix for at least 3 months!!!

I would like to help everyone out here because its important! You see Chantix makes you Hypothyroid this is because it (pituitory glands) blocks hormones from your Thyroid turning off recepticals to that area. So guess what you could drink water and still gain weight, dirty little secret its not you and in fact that is something you don't want messed with because it can become an issue were as your Thyroid stays turned off and you remain in a Hypothyroid state witch in turn follows your Adrenals and that is when you get excited or lets say spooked your heart starts pounding and as they say your adrenal goes into overtime. Long and short of it all is you have to have will power without the costly drug costing a lot and then causing other problems.

In just a short three months, my weight increased by a full 40 pounds. I have never in my life been close to a weight problem. Suddenly my weight has expanded to look like a pregnant non-smoking male. What a trade off. Fat for cigarettes.

You ignoramus:
You've obviously overlooked the numerous posts here from people who carefully monitor their caloric intake, who excersize, and who still GAIN WEIGHT. Read, for example, the post by the body-builder. Do you think he was/is a couch-potatoe before taking this horrible medication?
I'm guessing you work for some Chantex distributor, or sell it.
