My sister took her child to a doctor because she was snoring and sometimes waking up in her sleep because she couldn’t breathe and doctors told her she needs to have her adenoids removed. What are adenoids anyway?

Adenoids are spongy tissues in the back of the nose and they serve to trap bacteria in children. They are only useful until a child reaches 3-7 years and then they use their function as body develops other ways to fight infections. Adenoids are not visible like tonsils are. Doctor needs to use a scope in order to look at them. Sometimes adenoids grow so big that they make problems with breathing throught the nose or snoring and therefore need to be taken out just like in your niece’s case.
