I wish I was dead, I have tourettes and can't tolerate the sounds my nose makes. I have punched it hard many times for over a year, somehow it hasn't broken. I have had a problem since I was around 6 years old with my nose making clicking sounds and annoying me. When I was around 9 years I accidentally deviated my nasal septum and didn't tell my parents. My left nostril is bigger, and when I lie down on the side, after some seconds I can only breathe through the opposite nostril of which side I am lying on. Many years after a doctor said I needed surgery to correct it after I turned 18, but it never happened - I am 27 now. When breathing in or out hard my nose can make sounds. It can be a sound like a mouse clicking, or it can be a "deep low pitch sound", like an empty boot that hits something, the sound that would happen inside of the boot. I hate both sounds but the "deep sound" especially makes me go insane. The sounds can happen in both nostrils, but the "deep sound" mostly happens in my left nostril (the bigger nostril). Why can others breathe in & out without sounds but not me? I want this fixed or I want to stop living, one or the other works. I have been to nasal doctors and they don't know what surgery to perform specifically to make the sounds stop. I would like to be able to breathe through both sides again while lying down on the side, but most of all just want the sounds to stop. I don't mind the way my nose looks, don't want it to look any different, just want the problems inside fixed so I can stop bleeding, being in pain and hating my life like never before. I have an appointment at the hospital December 13th where we will talk about surgery. Can someone please suggest what could be the cause of the sounds, and or a suggestion for surgery that could fix the problem? I can't continue living like this, I just want it to stop - the intolerable nose sounds, or my life.

Hello, DesperateForNoseHelp.

It is possible that the nose making sounds could be related to a tic, which is a common symptom of Tourette’s.

Also, there are a few other possible causes for this. It could be due to something as simple as having a deviated septum, or it could be due to a sinus infection or allergies.

What you were told at your appointment?

Thanks for the reply. They suggested a surgery, which I think is called Turbinoplasty/Conchotomy in English (the name for it in Danish is: operation af næsens muslingeben). There was no guarantee that it would make the sounds stop, and if I remember, no guarantee that it would help at all. I didn't know what to say and we didn't proceed with it, but I was told that I would be able to come back. There was also the possibility of surgery for deviated septum, but it wasn't recommended, for reasons I don't exactly remember...
I remember the sounds happening when I was 6/7 years old, before I deviated my septum, but I think I might have made it worse, and 20 years later it's annoying me more than ever, and I wish it would stop...

Hello, again.

Turbinoplasty may reduce the amount of noise coming from your nose, but it is not guaranteed to stop it completely. It is possible that your nose is making other noises that cannot be addressed by the surgery.

Why haven't you undergone surgery? As I can see that is your best shot.

I don't know. There was a lot of uncertainty, but at this point I would rather try something than continue living like this. I would just prefer the type of surgery to be the right thing, a surgery that has the most chance to stop or reduce the sounds.

I talked with a friend of mine.

He told me that the most successful surgical procedure for reducing or eliminating nasal noises is septoplasty. This procedure corrects any deformities of the nasal septum, which is the thin wall of cartilage and bone dividing the two nostrils. During the procedure, the surgeon removes any cartilage or bone blocking the airways, allowing for better airflow and lessening the chances of sounds coming from the nose.

You said something that this procedure isn't recommended in your case. You cannot recall why?

Thanks for the help. I remember hearing sounds from before I accidentally messed up my septum, but not in the same way as now. Mainly I want the sounds to stop, but I also have strange problems breathing, a lot of the time only being able to breathe through one nostril. Sometimes sounds happen when the airflow switches from one nostril to another. I think the sounds could be related in a way...
Maybe it wasn't recommended because of the recovery process, and because nothing was guaranteed to help. I would have to ask the doctor.
Is your friend a type of doctor (it sounds like it)?

I would rather be dead than continue living like this. I can't take it and I'm tired of suffering and going insane. There needs to be surgery in attempt to fix it. I don't care how bad the recovery process is, it can't possibly be worse than this. If nothing is done to attempt a solution, there is not much left for me.

He's a medical student but will specialize in another area.

I like to test him from time to time with questions. :)

So, you will go with turbinoplasty, as recommended? Or you will ask for second opinion?

I don't know, I was supposed to have septoplasty done 10 years ago. Now I am being recommended turbinoplasty by doctors, but septoplasty was still a possibility. I'm not sure which to choose.

The literature says the following:

Turbinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the turbinates, which are structures in the nose that help to warm and humidify the air we breathe. When the turbinates are too large, they can block the nasal passages and make it difficult to breathe through the nose. Turbinoplasty can be done using different techniques, including radiofrequency ablation, laser surgery, or partial removal of the turbinates.

Septoplasty, on the other hand, is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated septum, which is when the wall of cartilage and bone that separates the nasal passages is crooked or off-center. A deviated septum can block one or both nasal passages and make breathing difficult. Septoplasty involves repositioning or removing parts of the septum to improve airflow through the nose.

Both procedures can be done alone or in combination with each other, depending on the specific needs of the patient. It is important to consult with an experienced ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist to determine which procedure, if any, is right for you.

If you have already seen an ENT and they have recommended both procedures as possibilities, you may want to ask them to explain the pros and cons of each procedure and how they might address your specific symptoms and concerns.

I will have to do that. I am not sure how to contact the doctor directly without an appointment, but I will have to find a way.

I am topic creator, septoplasty and turbinoplasty in march. Will it help? Can more be done? Otherwise i will quite frankly probably end up taking my own life

Wish I could volunteer my worthless ugly body as rabies patient or another interesting way to sacrifice myself for greater good, the surgery is so soon and yet I just want my life to end
