I hope someone can give me some helpful advice? I’ve been a type 2 diabetic now for about two years and over the past few months my blood sugar levels have been steadily creeping up. I haven’t changed anything and what I eat stays the same, but for some reason it’s getting higher. Anyway, my docs decided that he wants to increase the amount of metformin that I take and I’m worried that I’ll get side effects, not feel great, and that it won’t make a difference. Anyone had any experience of having to up their dose please?

: Hi! It's a really good question that you’re asking – but the truth is that diabetes can be a progressive disease, so what happens one day might not happen the next. The amount of insulin you produce can change and your bodys’ resistance to insulin can alter too. If you find that your blood sugars are creeping up over a prolonged period of time something is clearly going on, so you’ll need to take more metformin to help you along. It’s got to be better to increase that amount that you take than to be struggling with what you’re on?

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what the numbers are, it’s about you controlling the diabetes. I’d just say make sure you keep an eye on what’s happening and how you’re feeling and if it’s not right make sure you go to your doc and get checked out. If he says up the dose – go with it and just be sensible. The nurses are there to ask questions and they’ll make sure your blood sugars are in control – but let’s face it… if you had to take two migraine tablets rather than one you’d do it yeh? There’s no difference with that and your diabetes? Apart from the fact that you’d take the headache tablets without thinking about it? Good luck!
