It has recently come to my attention that one of my friends' spouse was pregnant a while ago. He said that she always took the pill at the same time (on an alarm daily). She was on an antibiotic for about a week and that is the only thing they think could cause her to get pregnant. Unfortunately they did not know that she was pregnant and ended up miscarrying. I'm worried because I just read in another thread that antibiotics only account for a 1% loss of effectiveness. If birth control pills are normally 99.7% effective the use of antibiotics would make them 98.7% effective.
Which of the following most likely happened to my friend...
-He was one of the 1.3% that slipped through the cracks
-The antibiotics played a larger role in the failure of the birth control.
My partner and I also use the pill as the sole form of birth control. But my partner takes the pill within the timeframe of 11:30 p.m.-1 a.m. daily without ever skipping a pill. Does my girlfriend not taking the pill at the exact time everyday make the pill less effective?
questions highlighted....thanks for help/opinions

The antibiotics could be one reason that she got pregnant absolutly. But another thing is stress my doctor told me that if im too stressed out while on bc then it could cause the bc to be less affective so either one of these could have been the cause. But if your gf takes the pill everyday then she will be fine but if she misses a few days then there is a chance she could get pregnant if having unprotected sex.

Hi Gatoraide, your girlfriend would actually have to miss 5 - 7 days to have her BC negated! And as I have stated before antibiotics only cause about a 1 percent decrease! When it is stated that pills are 99% effective you have to think of it this way! 1 out of every 100 women might get pregnant while on the pill - even if they take it to the minute every day! A dear friend of mine actually became pregnant 3 times while on BCP! She is VERY fertile!!! ;-) I will tell you what I have told my boys! ALWAYS wear a condom even if your partner is on the pill! This will TOTALLY eradicate ANY chance of pregnancy AND STD's! Good luck and health!

So if a woman is more fertile than normal, than they can still get pregnant while on the pill?

Anyone can get pregnant while on the pill - that said if you have no impeddement, such as cysts on your ovaries and ovultate on tiem then you will have a higher chance of pregnancy! There is only 1 way of NEVER getting pregnant and that is NO sex! IF a woman has even 1 ovary she can still get pregnant!!!! Women HAVE even become pregnant after hysterectomies - where 1 ovary was left! All an embryo needs is an egg and a sperm thats it! And it doesn't matter if you are on BCP or an IUD etc you CAN get pregnant! Women who have had tubal ligation can get pregnant, men who have had vasectomy's can still get a woman pregnant etc. ! SOMETIMES NOTHING can stop conception!
