I have been on co codamol for the last three months because of nerve/sciatica pain. Last week I had an operation and they stopped giving me co codamol and also amytriplyne which the doctor had also given me for the pain. It is now 9 days and this week I have had runs, sever sweating, sleepless nights ( I am still up and its 1.49am) and nausea. As the hospital didnt give me them I have continued not to take them not realising the effects. Think I will just see it out now as I have already done over a week. The facial flushing is horrendous too, bloody pills.

Hi My name is Lee, I have been on co-odamol since 1998 following a lower back injury, I have also had other health issues and my leg got crushed in 2005 plus 2 knee operations, the 2nd most recent 28/02/12 so these tablets have been a saint, since my 2nd op I have felt a little better with my knee so I have finally managed to go to be 2 nights in a row without painkillers and sleep. ok not sleep well and keep waking up throughout the night, but after reading other posts I now understand why. I stopped taking co-codamol on wednesday afternoon 28/03/12 and managed to go to bed without the need, so I decided that was it im not taking anymore. since then I haven't slept too good and keepn waking up alot throughout the night, I struggle then to get up in the morning, I have a massive headach, feel sick, cant stop going the loo and sitting at work for 12 hrs a day is killing me as I am aching all over and my body hurts so much. This is my 2nd full day without pain relief once I get thru the day. I do have some with me but I refuse to take them and I wanted to research if coming off the pain relief is the reason I am feeling so ill. after reading your story after only 18 months makes me feel really worried as I have been on them for almost 12 years and on some occasions I used to take upto 15 a day 3 at a time as well.
Thank you for your story, I was just hoping you could help me understand whats next and how long I am expected to feel like this for?
Kindest Regards
Lee

Hi Lee,
HANG IN THERE. You are feeling like sh*t bc the poison is leaving your body, after around the 4th day you will start to feel better. It gets better, I've been there and done it - you can do it too. You are in the middle of the toughest part now - in a couple of days things will feel better and most importantly you won't need the pills anymore.
Stay warm, try to drink water.

hi Anna9
Thank you for your message, most of the ill feelings have subsided except for feeling aggitated, always uncomfortable and I cannot get comfortable enough at night to sleep, which seems to make everything feel 10 times worse as i am now completely shattered. I have taken 2 paracetamols on saturday which cleared my head and nothing since but im struggling to settle the agitation and because recently I have had a knee op, that also seems to be hurting more than it did a week or so ago but again I really want to stay off the pain relief, but I am going to try either a deep heat rub tonight or paracetamols or ibuprofen just anything except codeine.
thank you for your kind words and I am sure we will be in touch again. hopefully with me feeling a lot better.

Nurofen plus is a work of the devil. I have been hooked on them and their evil little sidekicks Solpadeine Max for 2 years. My regime was 10 N+ and 8 SM together every 4 -6 hrs...blimey.
Like all opiates the "high" quickly passes to leave one with a vaguely blissed out feeling until the sweats start again and its time to hit the chemists again. Seriously I dont think there is a pharmacy in the south of England that wasnt on my call list.
Anyway. After spending christ knows how much on these pills, having to hide empty packs and foil all over the place and having my car stuffed with pharmacy bags and shameful receipts and having the pitiful looks from the counter girl at the late nite pharmacy once too often...its time to quit.
My progress so far. Im a week in and free. Not so bad now but the first few days were shocking with shakes, goosebumps, diahorrea bad temper, runny nose, lethargy and harsh backache.
I had read up on things to make life easier for quitting, I would recommend Baclofen in HIGH doses (like 80mg) or Gabapentin (again HIGH 240mg) you certainly sail through the first couple of days...cant really recommend continuing like that as you are quite zombied as a consequence.
My understanding of the way that opiates are metabolised lead me to an interesting conclusion. I have been prescribed pure codiene in the past and they did not give the same sense of well being as N+. I believe there is something about the Ibuprofen which is known to be a mild stimulant in combinant with codiene which makes these pills so pleasing to the synapses...just a thought.
Anyway. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Good luck fellow travellers.

Hi all,
My name is Laura and i'm 21.
I have been taking 6 cocodamol everyday for 4/5 years, I take 6 all at one go at nigh time every night.
I'm starting Uni in September and want to cut this awful habit out of my life for good.
I don't believe the cold Turkey approach would work for me, so I've began to cut down.
Does anybody have any advice on how to do this, I 100 % have the will power I just want to escape it.
Would cutting down 1 tablet every week to gradually cut them out be sufficient or would I have to cut down faster than that? or is it just whats right is more individualised.
I can't let them ruin my life, enough is enough.
Any help or advice would be massively be appreciated,
Laura

Hi Laura,
I think you answered your own question, every individual is different, myself I stopped completely and felt rough for 2 weeks then normal pain killers wasn't helping me at night with my Knee pain after my operation, so to actually get some sleep I now only take 1 or 2 at night depending on how I feel and no longer any in the day at all, not even paracetamol, so cut down to 3 or 4 for a few weeks see how that goes, then maybe stay on 3 at night for a further month tops, then two at night again 4 weeks max then 1 for as long as you feel ready to have non or alternate have one then the following night non the following night one if you feel like you need to, but yeah I think if you stopped instantly you could cause more harm than good.
I hope this helps & good luck
Kindest Regards

Hi Lee,
Thank you very much for your reply. It's very helpful to hear other people's stories to know that you're not alone. I'm down to 5 a night this week (taking four around 8 o'clock then 1 around 10) , I'm currently sitting some important exams so I think cold turkey really could mess a lot of stuff up. I think that this is the most realistic way for me to get rid of this horrible problem.
As for damage to my body, what should my main concerns be? Kidneys and liver? I realise I never went over the 8 a day limit however I was taking 5 in one go then another one just before bed.
I've noticed that when I take them now I just feel ill, no bliss, no high just ill.
It never really was about a high for me, more the fact I knew it would always get me to sleep and for the whole night. I think I really enjoyed the zombie state it would put me into as the past few years were particularly rough for me and my family. The tablets just became a way of coping and blocking stuff out.

Hi Laura,
I'm not completely sure about internal damage or long term problems, as I for well over 12 years exceeded the 12 a day myself, admittingly not everyday and sometimes would go many hrs between doses sometimes. I haven't suffered any symtoms as yet and my GP seems happy up to now. So the only thing I can suggest is, for now continue with your exams and concentrate on this important time in your life and try to slowly come off the medication and once things settle in your life hopefully you will be on a lot less co-codamol a day and also you can speak to your GP, explain everything including that you have reduced youre daily intake, because I am sure by then you will have progressed and ask him about any possible tests to check for any damage. I'm certain all will be clear, but it's always nice to be sure. Good luck with your exams, I am sure you will do well and I hope when your tested everything is clear. And let me know how you get on in the near future. Good luck again and if you need to chat drop me an email anytime and I will come back to you as soon as possible.
Kindest Regards

Hi perfect -angel, I really hope your recovery is going well and your staying strong, I see so many likeness between ourselves, I lie to the doctor and family I beg steal and borrow my cocodamol I've been on 400 30/500mg for 5 years for a back injury now the doctor has reduced it to half the amount. So I now get 224 a month which I take the lot within a week then I'm back borrowing or buying over the counter cocodamol which I go through a box a day, I hate myself for this and the mood swings are awful when I don't have any, I like you can't seam to find anything on the Internet to tell me what to expect if I do come off them I feel all the aches and pains you are experiencing, I have a physical job self employed, 4 houses, a young family which I hide it all from now I'm lying to the doctor regularly to get more tablets but now he is getting wise to my lies, I can't see a way out, please let me know how it feels to be clean again as I to want my life back,
